BACKREST?

Just ordered the risers from NMN and I'm thinking a custom seat is next. Right now, my butt gets sore really quickly-like 50-60 miles in saddle so hopefully a seat will help.(other suggestions appreciated:helpsmilie:)
My question is: Do you suggest a backrest(for driver)? Do you use it? Benefits? :dontknow:
Thanks
Dick
PS I'm pretty tall-6'6" if that matters.

I'd suggest highway pegs and floor boards... need to stretch those long legs!!!... that helps not only the butt, but also your back, knees, hips, etc etc.

Thanks, Don. I do have the brackets ordered as well for the highway pegs. Going to wait and see what ISCI comes up with their boards. I also think I will take LaMonsters advice and forego the backrest when I get to the seat.

:agree:

Also, if you're deciding on a Russell seat, a Corbin seat, or waiting on a new BRP seat, I'd recommend the AirHawk cushion. If you end up getting a whole new seat, I really think you could sell it easily, but it's way cheaper for now.

Thanks, I did get an AirHawk and it does help but I still get the sore rear. I've been playing with the inflation on it-maybe I don't have it inflated properly yet. :dontknow: I was hoping that it would take care of my tender butt. It certainly is alot cheaper.

Just remember, Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body. :D

I had the same problem with the butt and not being able to strech my legs out. I fixed it for the most part with a Russel Day Long saddle and highway pegs as well as no magic risers. No it was not cheap but if you are going to ride you need to comfortable to enjoy it. Very pleased with all 3 fixes. Good luck

Maybe so...but TOO MUCH Pain and it's the Body that leaves!

When my but hurts I just go faster. It's hard to hurt when you're scared! Adrenalin does wonders for those little aches and pains.

Just my 2c and probably overpriced at that. :D

Butt Buffer

There's a less known product out there (made in Pennsylvania) called the Butt Buffer, a gell pad with straps to keep it on your seat. They can be ordered plain or with embriodery on them (mine has the POW/MIA logo on it) or you can have them install the gel pad into your stock seat. They're at buttbuffer.com

I got pretty sore last weekend afteer a two-hour back road putt with wife. I have not been riding much lately due to a series of surgeries on rotator cuff, foot, etc. I think a lot of my discomfort is due to being out of shape. Sidecar and trike driving is far more strenuous than two-wheeling, and unused muscles of butt, torso and shoulders are brought into play. Once developed, these muscles not only get stronger but ease some of the discomfort you guys are describing. Sore knees and hips are another issue, guess some highway pegs would be good for that. JMHO.

The more I ride with my Corbin seat - the more I like it. The backrest is a bit strange to get used to - so I don't use it that much.

It does make it more noticable when the Spyder throws you back against the backrest - :D

NMN risers and front highway pegs are a must for any long ride.

Trickie Dick,
Back to your original question. I guess like everything spyder, it is all up to the individual. I use a bikersfriend bag that has a backrest attached. I wondered if I would still use it with my new Russell Day Long seat or not. So I attached it to my bike for my 4 1/2 hour ride to Niagara Falls. I found that yes, I extend my legs out to my floor boards and yes I did enjoy the ability to lean back and just enjoy the ride. I think it is really going to come in handy on the trip to LA. I can put things in there that I need to get out quick and easy and still have my back rest in place but I don't have to have it on all the time. Here is a posed photo but you get the idea.

dtang,
I hadn't seen that bag before. Looked it up and that's a good idea. What size do you have and what would you recommend for my longer legs etc? I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Russell Daylong seat. As I recall reading, you really like yours. Just got my brackets from NMN for the hiway pegs. Hope to get them on this weekend.
Thanks

I have the Large but I think Brian's XL looks better with the spyder and it carries a bit more stuff. Also, if you were to look at our two Russell's side by side you will notice a difference in the length of the driver seat. Mine was mad shorter to move me more forward so I could reach my highway pegs and Brian's was made longer to accommodate his 36" inseam. That is why we went with Russell, they asked for pictures of us in the position we wanted the seat to fit and our weight and inseam. I like my bikersfriend bag very much too. I have the highway pegs and throttlemeister and when I am sitting back cruising it is just a nice comfortable relief position for the long haul. Good luck getting exactly what you need so you can be as comfortable and happy as possible with your spyder.

dltang...I like the bikersfriend bag a lot but I have a question. Will it attach to the passenger seat or should I get the fender mounted option?

I attach mine right to my passenger seat. I use the straps that came with it to actually attach it to the seat itself, running under the seat so I don't have to take it off to refuel and then I use the two small bungie cords they supplies and I clip it to one side of the back D-ring and run it around to the front of the opposite D-ring and then repeat on the other side. This holds it in place snugly without marring my seat or anything like that. I will try to post some photos of exactly how I do attach it for you. It is kind of hard to explain.

dltang,
I really like the looks of the bikersfriend bag as well. This might be on another thread but how much was it? Right now my better half and I are using waterproof boat dufflebags with about the same set up on the passenger seat except its attached with all bungie cords. Thanks,
