BACK UP BRAKE SQUEAK SOLVED .....

I will revisit this fix after my surgery, when I have some slightly softer springs.

:yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

.
:roflblack: Guess I could have phrased that one a little better.

I will buy some new springs while I am recovering from my knee surgery, and install them when I can get down that low once again.

How's that? Then again, having the doc install new springs in me could be helpful... :roflblack:

Whew, Scotty, I was concerned. Those springectomies are really tough... I had heard it's best to have those while you're still <<ummm>> a spring chicken. :D

Good luck on the surgery!

Rear Brake Spring

Every time I parked my:spyder2: in my garage, the next day I would push out before starting and the rear brake would just howl like crazy, I would mess around with the rear brake by hand and some times it appeared to seperate the pads just enough to stop the howling, but would go right back to howling. I went to Home depot and purchased a $3.50 pack of springs, found two that were about the right size, would have to squeeze just alittle to get them in, but went in fine, not to stiff, and not to weak. After the install, like the other fellow showed in his pic, it worked instanley, and been riding for a week with lots of miles and no more rear brake noise, riding or pushing. another in expensive mod (like the truck spring and push button trunk light) that someone came up with that really works, and was nice enough to share it with all of us. Mod dose not effect the rear braking power in any way. My front brakes squeal from time to time. might try that mod on them too??........anyway thanks.

Brilliant!

this morning backing out of garage i heard that bad brake squeak that we have learned to grow and love:joke:
I took a shot that pads were not seperating so i installed two small springs between brake pads on the caliper slide bolts .... so far no squeak and brakes are still functioning perfect ...i'll let you all know how it works out over time .

I had been putting up with the brake noise, and it seemed to be getting slowly quieter over time, but I had to adjust the park brake last week and as soon as I did, the squeal came back to full volume and intensity.

I fitted a couple of springs as you suggested and no brake squeal. :2thumbs: Backward or forward.trailing the brake at the lights, not a peep.

This points out that the noise was caused by the back brake alone. Probably the park brake mechanism stopping the pads from withdrawing far enough.

As Scotty pointed out, I too have a bit more pedal travel. I will cut down the springs I used one coil at at time until the squeal returns, then buy a pair that are just longer than that.

Thanks heaps tatt2r. My Spyder riding enjoyment has just gone up.:firstplace:

Cheers;

I guess I could have just measured and cut, but I wanted to see the effect, so I cut the springs down a coil at a time until they were just one coil longer than the space between the pads.

At this point the brake pedal travel was normal, and the squeal just occasional when rolling the bike backward. I went looking for a pair of springs that size and didn't find any. I compared the length against the original springs, and the cut downs were half the original length.

I'll stick with what I have. I might have to shim them when I replace the pads, but I'm very happy with the result.

this is genius. But I havent had any problems ever since I sprayed WD40. works great no complaints..

Spraying lubricant on parts that operate based on their frictional characteristics is risky at best. :yikes: There are past threads discussing this.

Would you happen to have a sku # for the home depot springs Please?

Home Depot does not have a huge assortment of springs, basically they sell an assortment on a clear plastic box. The one I have here is an 84 pc assortment made by Everbilt. SKU is either 471 864 or 15642. It maybe the same on Tatt2r found his springs in. I did find two in there that may work if shortened. Approx 1 inch long x 1/2 inch OD and the wire guage if I had to guess, about 40-50 thou. When you place the first pad on the bolt, and then the spring, the spring reaches the point where the e-clip goes. Place the other pad on and it takes quite a bit of push to get it past the e-clip groove. Those would be too long and too strong according to Scotty's recommendation. I would not feel comfortable with those.

I went to a local Ace hardware and bought a couple of 3/4x1/2x.035 springs. Closer to what Scotty recommends. (5/8"x9/16"x0.035").

Tat, do you have any dimensions on the ones you used?

This is a great little mod.

Curious to know if two springs required (one on each of the two caliper bolts), or just one?

Thanks, great mod tatt!!

do those exercises scotty :)

Hello Scotty. Knee replacement? If so, a friendly reminder. Do your daily exercises each and every day. My dad is 76. One knee replaced at age 74 and the other at 75. He was deer hunting 5 weeks after surgery and got him a nice one, both years. He still does his daily exercises. His thoughts were: "If this knee replacement doesn't work, I sure has heck do not want it to be because I did not do what I was supposed to do."
Take care of yourself and I hope you are on your feet and spyder ASAP. Jerry

Both Nancy and I stretch and work out every day. We both actually workout three times a week at PT (maintenance), too. Unfortunately, I tore a hamstring recently, so I am back in full PT. They are also working on some leftover tendon and scar tissue issues from the surgery. I agree with your dad's philosophy 100%! (Please forgive the hijacking.)

Who knew that my 2 favorite mods would be a couple springs. First the trunk and now the brakes.

Thanks Tatt2r. Pure Genius:2thumbs:

I did this mod sometime ago and it worked great. Just drop it off at the dealer to get new tire and updates done. I told them not to lose my springs. I said, if you don't want to put them back on, fine but don't lose them. I just got this blank stare from them like I had another head. Same dealer that "fixed" the problem in the first place by adjusting the belt tension which worked for about 5 min. Sad thing, dealer is 1.5 hours away is the best in the area. What ya going to do..
