ATTGATT

I had a friend die in 1968 when he lost his bike on construction gravel on an asphalt road . . . he didn't break a single bone, but he lost a lot of skin and died the same way so many burn victims do, from infection. Everyone should read this young woman's story . . . and see those terrible scars. ATGATT has unlimited value . . . because :cus: happens! I even ordered my Firstgear Thermo suit large enough to fit over my summer riding gear!

Folks, this is a must read. Not only is it well written, it's worth every moment of your time.

What a gal

...and some people dis me because I consistently pursue safe practices. Those people should dis themselves for being ill informed.

I guess we all have that "It can't/won't happen to me" moment. Life can be a cruel and harsh teacher. Lesson learned. ATGATT for me, and I ride in a state where helmet laws are non-existent for 21 and older riders. Thanks for the reminder. :doorag:

Quite a story. You would think ,since I have had my own wreck, I would be a total ATGATT but alas I am not. But I do wear a 3/4 helmet and leather vest and shoes or boots at the least. I very rarely wear leather pants and jacket only below 70deg. I might have to rethink it.

I've kind of learned to follow the "live, and let live" doctrine...
I wear the gear; I ride with folks who don't...
But I never say anything about it to them.
They return the favor...

there's an old saying: "Nobody ever finds God on Prom Night"...
Things have to get down into the "darkness", before folks learn from their mistakes...

I ride with some groups that do not believe in Safety gear. I do and always have. To each their own, but if asked, I tell why, it works. Mesh gear protects and is not real hot, warm yes, stopped hot. But as One lady rider says on her license bracket. " I would rather sweat then bleed."
There was a incident locally (Beavercreek, Ohio) a year or so ago. the rider (sport bike) (reportly) took off fast, The passenger fell of the back. The rider looked back when he felt her fall, went left of center, hit a car head on and died. He was a Vet. PGR offered to attend and was asked to, even with the motorcycles, because he would have wanted it. The lady survied, but was banged up pretty bad. I saw her at the funeral. There is a small memorial about a mile from my house. I ride/drive bye it a lot.
To the safety gear, I would add.
If you carry passengers, often or once in a while, think very hard about back rests. Ask your passenger ( they may fib a little), do they know how to ride ? Where to hold on. Leaning in turns.
Thanks to the lady who wrote this story. Good luck and best wishes for the future.

Boots are good. 39% of motorcycle injuries are to toes, feet and ankles. Armored boots eliminate ninty-three percent of those injuries according to a US Marine Corps study. Old fashioned work boots are good for a 71% reduction. Helmets reduce fatalities by 41%. White helmets reduce the remaining 59% by an additional 24%. I don't have any statistics for armored jackets and pants. I think the US Marine Corps studies have this data, but I don't have it with me. The question is how far can you slide on asphalt before the garment wears through...

Funny thing about the military. Any branch. They decide when you're eligible for sacrafice. :roflblack:

Even though I have a Can Am mesh jacket it obviously is not for crash protection so I just ordered 2 First Gear mesh jackets for my wife an I that are more protective. I did read a little on the rating system ( CE) and got good information. . We have leather gear for cold weather but it gets way to hot in the summer here in SC to wear it. I got a good price on ebay for them but wow the pants are not cheap anywhere. Gonna have to keep an eye out. The jackets will match my Mag silver RT and each other well and now she has another Christmas present:thumbup:. Thanks for this thread I was not aware of the protective quality of it.

You might have gotten a better deal from Bajaron?

remember that the crash statistics on Spyders shows that there is a near zero probability of a high side nor a low side crash. We are a lot safer on 3 wheels than anyone on two wheels. I tried really hard to come up with good statistics--but due to the very few crashes reported to the National Highway Safety Administration, quantification of that statement is not possible.

We need to be concerned with impact/collision related crashes. This means at least a helmet, gloves, boots and an armored mesh jacket, and probably some sort of eye protection.

Now, I can only wish to follow my own advice religiously. I guess I am infected with that disease named "denial". At least it is "informed denial". So my stupid actions are not due to lack of knowledge--but by are due to other defects in my personality!

Riding any sort of motorcycle is not about safety. If we wanted to be perfectly safe we would stay not just in cages, but in sedans. Riding is about fun, and for me that fun is enhanced if I know that I've taken the steps that I can take to reduce my risks of injury.

Hence: boots, white helmet, gloves, goggles (my helmet is open face--and I know that the lack of chin protection is an issue), a jacket (mesh when it's hot, leather when it is cooler), 1/2 chaps or full chaps--depending on weather. THIS is psychologically comfortable for me. ...and no booze--ever--not even one before riding. When I don't do it, at least I am making a decision to not do it--and not one made only because I don't have knowledge. However, I NEVER drink before riding. Alcohol is involved in between 34% and 43% of motorcycle fatalities. The reason for the range is because it depends on which continet the data come from--more DUI deaths in Europe than in America.

I don't know about others, but when I am free to make decisions for myself AND I understand the consequences of those decisions, then and only then, I have a sense of freedom.

Military requires long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots, full finger gloves, helmet and eye protection and, during hours of darkness, a retroreflective vest to ride on base. Some installations also require a bright colored vest during the day for active duty members in uniform and civilians. The reg does not require "armored" clothing but does recommend it. Graduation from an accredited MSF class is also required for active duty members.

Remember this little beauty that showed where the impacts were on a helmet? View attachment 80471
When I went down the area right above the eyes, the part that ciovers the forehead was worn away so much that after I got up and took off my helmet, I pushed my finger all the way through. Without the helmet I would be dead.

By the way, where did you find that impact graphic?
