All -

I cannot believe this. A PG&E gas main let go @ 1800 hrs not even 2 milles from where I live. We drove through that same area not 10 minutes before it blew. It was initially reported as a plane crash. over 50 homes are gone. The fire is still out of control. Obviously my Internet is still OK and we are OK here.

Pray for these people. This is crazy...

I saw this come across the internet shortly after it happened.

This is just unreal.

Glad you and your family are ok.

Praying for everyone in the area.

This is very scary for me as I work across the street from the BP refinery here in Los Angeles.

Man, this is weird. We can smell the smoke and there is a strange glow just over the hill. There are sirens everywhere. It's going to be a long night. So far the wind is not blowing hard so that is a huge factor. Usually it's 15-20mph which means the fire would probably be here by now. Thanks for the good wishes. There is backup from 50 miles away coming in to help...

Wow, I am very soory to hear about the loss of 50 homes. That is a huge tragedy. I am happy to hear you weren't riding through there when it happened, and wish you the best with the situation. Hopefully they will get the fire under control before it can spread and do anymore damage.

Prayers are going out for all of those who have lost homes, and loved ones in this incident.

Here is a link to an article about it: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...fed-by-fire-after-gas-pipeline-explosion.html

Has the local news said anything about evacutations in your area?

There are no evac orders issued for us YET. But we are waiting. Now that some genius at PG&E figured out that they needed to turn the darn gas line off, a high pressure 24 inch line that originates in TEXAS things are a bit better. Flames were almost 1000 feet high at one point early in the crisis. so far all I have heard reported ws 1 dead, 6 in ICU at Kaiser S.S.F. , another dozen in another local hospital and and 6 more at another. We'll see how things go from here, but withthe extra help coming in I think they will contain it pretty soon. The sweep that occurrs after the fire is out will reveal the real story. RIght now the Police ar asking for roll calls for people in the immediate area.

You know what the freaky thing is about this? If I had not taken today off to take my Sister to the Zoo, I would have riding through THAT neighborhood when it blew. That is my route home. I don't even know what to say about that...

Glad to hear you're okay!

Many, many thanks. I feel pretty fortunate and dare I say even a bit lucky at this point. The light of day will reveal much more of course. Right now there is just chaos. But they are doing a good job getting this thing under control. It's just hard to process that 2 blocks have just been wiped off the map. I feel for those people. I pray that the coming sweep will produce minimal loss of life. Anyway, I'm just glad that I could reach out to you guys. Lamont, If I should have posted this in off-topic, I apologize. It was a knee-jerk reaction to come here.

Just read more about it this morning, and saw the pictures as well. It will be a very long time before the neighborhood recovers from this. I too am hoping the search and recovery sweep doesn't end up finding a lot more victims.

I have been watching this ever since it aired on FOX News. Now 4-6 dead and I can only imagine that, sadly, the death toll will rise.

They are reporting that PG&E has known about a gas smell in that neighborhood for almost a month. INCREDIBLE!! Can anyone spell LAWSUIT?

Very sad indeed for those involved. Seems we've had quite a few of these oil and gas disasters lately. I had no idea the amount of pipelines we have running all over the place until our own oil spill in my hometown. Found out it's part of a 19,000 mile system!!!

Man. Tellin ya, you just dont know what's underneath you. The fire STILL isn't out; 80 % contained at this point but not heading in our direction. 40 homes gone and all they would say is "Dozens more" significantly damaged. Over 15 acres burned. 6 dead, 53 injured badly, and it aint over yet. 4 fire fighters were injured as well. Looks like I'll be taking another route home, that's for sure. But the story is national now, so you can follow it as you like.

They (PG&E) have been working in this same area in the recent past but no one seems to really know what it is they are doing. I know this is geologically unstable land as they have had sink holes in this area that have basically swallowed houses. Sounds like a good place to put a pressurized gas line to me, eh? :yikes: unbelieveable.

The main thing is it looks like the worst is over in terms of the immediate incident, I personally dodged a big bullet which I am very greatful for, and I will continue to pray for those that weren't so lucky. I think PG&E is going to have a lot of questions to answer behind this one man. People were smelling gas for days before this happened, and they came out, took a half :cus: look around, said they couldn't find anything wrong and left; with the gas smell still in the air! :dontknow:

Well enough. Thank you all for the good thoughts and wishes. Means alot. I'll choose to not talk about it any more and get back to what we love - our Spyders!

An Angel on your shoulder!!!

WOW Raptor,
Glad you're OK.
It's another example that things can change in the blink of an eye. After the fires we had a few years back here in San Diego, it makes you aware of how someones life can change and what a struggle it can be to deal with the aftermath of such a disaster. I was not directly affected by the fires but several people I know (through work as well as friends of friends) were profoundly affected.
