Are There Still People Out There Who Don't Think Helmets Are Necessary?

back off

To all you people who think you have to wear a helmet, back off. It,s a personal choice. PERIOD. To all you fact quote'rs get a grip. You are right about the facts in this area BUT I bet I could sure as hell look at your home and find alot more dangerous things there that we all know about and you have done nothing about. Do you have nonslip surfaces in your bathrooms, tub shower ect?? Grab bars? Proper hand rails and railings? GFI's. Smoke and CO detecters? I could go on (and I really could). These things are PROVEN far more dangerous than not wearing a helmet and EVERYBODIES insurance pays for it.
People in glass houses should not throw stones.

You apparently didn't read the link in the first post. that's a good start.

I'm the one who posted it silly...I'm commenting on her comment about poor fitting helmets as being a reaon NOT to wear a helmet and going back to that ole 'choice' thingy...

She's giving an opinion...the facts are clearly contrary...(as per the study)

I'm trying to figure out why everyone keeps looking at other things to justify not wearing a helmet. Let's stick to the topic and not get emotional about it. Facts are facts... As far as other hazards go, sure they exist...no question....but this study is on one very serious and expensive topic that addresses all of us. Did you read the dollar amounts? Don't wear a helmet if you don't want to...if you live in a state that permits, it's your 'choice'...just be personally 100% responsible for whatever happens. It's that simple...I don't think anyone has a problem with that?

I think you hit it on the head - PERSONAL responsibility. Using a helmet, and type of helmet, should be your choice - anything that occurs from not wearing one, is also your choice, and no one else should pay for it.

There are a lot of folks who have NEVER ridden anything, may not have even driven a car (really - my mother never drove a car), who truly believe anything beyond walking is dangerous.

I ride a recumbent trike - like the Spyder without a motor - and I NEVER wear a helmet, nor would consider it. I get hassled by walkers all the time, about the bad example I'm showing to young bike riders… I've never used a helmet on a bike, which I have ridden for 60 years… That's my choice. We really have very few choices left - protect them, and don't dis those who exercise that right…..

As you should be 100% responsible if the lack of any of these things injures you in your house. How far does this go?? This is nanny state stuff. Where does it end. Where do you draws the line? If you go by what costs the most or effects the most people then we need to go into you house. You tell me where do we stop??:banghead:

Going off the old addage "Dress for the crash, not the ride" I do think you're stupid if you don't wear one. But it is your choice, the laws are there, really, to keep their spending down and income up.

It's a personal choice. One I dont think someone should be called " stupid " for making. I know what can happen and it's a chance I as a free American adult that I take. I live in south Texas so I could call someone stupid for wearing a helmet in 110 degree weather. I dont call someone that just for making a different choice than I make. If you decide to wear a hemet I respect that. If you decide not to wear one I also respect your ability to make that choice and live with knowing what can happen in an accident much like I do

I second this! Just try to run your own life, we can run ours be it good or bad choices. If we kill ourselves because of our choices then so be it. You people don`t understand the reasons we make our choices so just stop trying to do it for us. I think wearing a helmet is the best choice but I still prefer the open free feeling without it. I respect your choice to wear a helmet but not your choice to try to make other peoples choices. In this respect you are dead wrong and don`t throw out that cost to society thing. Our freedoms are not for sale at any cost. All freedoms have a cost of some kind. Ride free my friends however that may be for you.

Why don't you take a look at the results of one such choice below....

To all you people who think you have to wear a helmet, back off.

And no, I will not back off.when a person dies as a result of not wearing a helmet, it's not just the death and it's immediate effects that affect the people close to them. It's everything that results from that death and everything that results from those results and so on into infinity. I am a completely different person today than the one I would have become had a not lost my father. My mom eventually remarried and I grew up having a step father I absolutely hated, loathed, and frequently envisioned dancing on his grave. As a result, I spent much of my life hiding in my room simply to avoid the man and fiddling with electronics and turned into a geek. My dad was an outdoorsman. Like liked hunting, fishing, skiing, off-reading. Had he not died, I could easily have seen myself being a gear head instead of a computer geek, among a myriad of other differences. The entire course of my life is not what it should have been, and it all comes down to not. Wearing. A. Helmet.

Personal choice to wear a helmet? Based on the FACTS, all states should have mandatory helmet laws...the only way around this is unless the person who's not wearing one signs off on paying 100% of their own medical bills if there is a problem. The numbers speak for themselves. it's not personal choice if the medical bills are in the hundreds of thousands and we all have to pay for it and simply being responsible would've led to a different result?

Is putting a child in a child seat personal choice too?

Florida has this exact law that you must have full health insurance coverage in order to not wear a helmet.
2) a child is not of a mind to make a proper decision.

I ALWAYS wear a helmet, IMO, it's unsafe not to, it's loud, rain and bugs hurt, etc...HOWEVER--it's my choice! I am grateful that there is still enough freedom left in this country for folks to be able to make personal decisions that harm no one but themselves. It's way too easy for each government agency, in their endless quest for power, growth and more of your money, to mandate all kinds of rules under the auspices of safety, conservation, general; good, etc. Millions have died over countless generations in the name of securing and maintaining liberty. Don't be so quick to give up those liberties for others based on your personal opinions and exacerbate it with name calling.

You people don`t understand the reasons we make our choices so just stop trying to do it for us.

Yeah, it feels good without one, I can get that. But I think in a lot of cases it comes down to, unconsciously perhaps, pure laziness or stubbornness. Like people are not wearing a helmet simply because they don't want people telling them they have to.

 Are we having fun yet??
Let's all relax for a minute and let the nerves settle down a bit...
Now... helmet usage; why do or why don't you wear one? (Let's hold back the judgement of others for right now;Please...)
I wear one and will always wear one for several reasons:
My folks spent a ton of money on an education for me; I don't want it leaking out into the roadway!
Even though I've already got a face "Made for Radio", I don't want things to get any worse!
I don't want my Missus becoming a "Meryy Widow" just yet; I'm not done making her miserable!
seriously...
I sell insurance, so I see the accident reports; Helmets seem to keep things from getting any worse than they already are when your World has just to :cus:. :yikes:
Helmet Laws???
Mulltiple issues are at play here.
Who has to take care of the biker who's in a long-term facility because he (or she) didn't feel that they had anything worth protecting between their ears?
If it's going to fall to the rest of us to foot the bill, (Increased health care premiums or taxes), then perhaps society does need to step in and set some guidelines. (Sorry!)
BUT...
If the biker in question can "fly or die" on their own without anybody else paying for the dance; I don't need helmet laws!
I'm off the soapbox new...

You're out of line with your reasoning. Show me the data on the numbers of brain/head injuries and the cost and I'll tell you where we should start. There are recalls of devices all over the home all the time to help safeguard the public. It needs to be done because most people don't know the dangers and it's up to the manufacturers to help figure that out for us.

In regards to helmets, when you have studies that have all shown the same thing for years...(they ALL show the same results time and time again), this topic of 'choice' becomes moot. There's really no valid argument factually against wearing a helmet...it's all emotional...there are no facts that back not wearing a helmet, so people resort to saying that I should be able to choose. Okay, so be it. Just sign that if you get a head trauma, that you, and you alone, are responsible for all your bills....that would resolve the issue in a fair manner.

The problem is that when someone doesn't die and their injuries cost tremendous amounts of money to keep alive as vegetables. Nobody should be responsible for someone's inability to figure out some basic reasoning skills. If people really want to hinge their understanding on 'freedom' and 'choice' on not wearing a helmet, then they should be 100% responsible for the consequences...if people were to sign to this, it would save everyone else tremendous amounts of money. Read the numbers of the study...

There's simply nothing to validate not wearing a helmet. Good thing for Darwinism!

Bob, I tend to really love your posts...you always make a lot of sense!

Maybe the best route would be for motorcycle insurance companies to adopt a policy not covering the claim of any who get in an accident not wearing a helmet.

Should I use a helmet yep but I don't always do so, heck it took me 2 years and cost me over 300 to find one that fit my thick skull LOL, but the problem I have with government deciding this is every thing we let them control makes it that much easier for them to control the next thing, I think all alcohol should be banned but we know that doesn't work, next they will ban motorcycles and trikes for the same reasoning they are using for the helmets they are dangerous so we shouldn't be allowed to make the choice to ride or not, that's just my opinion, and I respect every one else opinion too, just be careful what you let lose with all the regs they will never stop.

I don't care what you ride just ride!:doorag:

And bob the insurance man can probably roll out studies that show how many people are injured or die each year in the home that could be prevented if you just did a few simple things. You never answered the question, do you have non-slip surfaces in your bathroom. I bet those national injury statistics can be just as opening and shocking. Fix your own life before you try to fix someone elses. JMHO

That article was hilarious, thanks for the knee slapper. The article actually says that the percentage of motorcyclists killed who are not wearing helmets is higher in states not requiring helmets. No kidding! That's like saying that fewer nude people die in state's that require clothes! It doesn't make any comparison between overall rate of death between requiring or non-requiring states. Pathetic nanny state propaganda.
