• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS ISSUE

My brakes occasionally squeal or maybe rub in reverse, when not applied. I am assuming it is the brakes, because when I apply the brakes in reverse the noise stops. Doesn't happen all the time. No problems in forward. Not sure why it is sometimes and not others. Any suggestions. 2012 RTS SM5. Just under 6000 kms.

The pads are hanging up just a bit...
Is it the rear brake that's doing this?
Pop the caliper off of it's perch, and remove the pads...
Then clean those pins up.
I believe that there's even a special lubricant availalbe for just this application... apply a tiny amount to those pins, and put things back together!

If the squeal is only in reverse... don't worry about it. Most motorcycle brake pads are set extremely close to the rotors to minimize road grime from getting in. Some pads even ride on the rotors a little (Harley Road King) and there is a noticeable dragging sound which is also normal.

My theory as to why they squeal in reverse is that: 99% of the time we apply the brakes while in forward gears... thus the pads wear ever so slightly in an off-parallel bias. They also establish a biased grain in the forward direction. When applied in reverse, it's like going against the grain... fingernails on a blackboard kind of thing.

Nothing to worry about.

It may be unwanted and annoying, but it is common and "normal". Dirty or damp/humid brakes usually make it worse.

Not to worry..!!

This happens on all disk brake system. You could follow Bob's suggestion if it bothers you a lot. But most of us don't do a great deal of backing up anyway..

Pins? I'm on my 3rd set of rear pads changed them out before MV as rears were almost metal, 18k mi, now just over 20 k pedal feels grabby almost like warped rotors. Fronts @ 16k were about half worn hoped to avoid wearing the rotors out. Put brake quiet on fronts made big difference as far as noise. Last night on way home from work light came on so I checked master rear reservoir was tad low and fluid is black. Isn't fluid replacement done @ 14 k service? Will report back when I get a chance to drive it tomorrow night.:mad:

I've only had my RT since April but. Noticed my doing the same thing. Pretty common on most all motorcycles so no need to worry, but if it really bothers you, do as I did and turn the tunes up really, really loud...... Problem solved .
