Any Repair Shop Recommendations in Los Angeles?

I have a 2011 RSS, and something went out during a high-speed run and now white smoke is coming out of the exhaust. I'm pretty sure I blew some sort of a gasket. Dealers don't want to touch it due to the age and also cos it has an aftermarket turbo on it. If anyone has any recommendations for a shop, big or small, it will be much appreciated. At this point I'll take anything in the greater Los Angeles, CA area, and I might need to expand that if I can't find anyone closer.

I'm sorry, but from here Down Under, I really can't help you with any local LA recommendations. :opps: . But from what you describe, I'd think that it's pretty much 100% likely that you've blown something, and hopefully it's just a gasket!!

Can you describe in more detail what else it's doing now?? :dontknow:

You've already done some fairly significant damage, so unless you try cranking/running it for an extended period, I doubt you'll be doing too much more damage, so can you tell us a bit more about what it's doing/sounds like now? ;)

  1. If you know it's pumping out white smoke, it's clearly still cranking; but is it running at all??
  2. Or does it seem to spin freely and faster than usual without ever quite catching/running, despite sounding like it's trying to?
  3. Is it making any abnormal noises while it cranks/spins/runs?
  4. Does it 'run' at all; and if it does, is it still clearly running on two cylinders or lumping along on one... or just clattering unevenly then grinding to a halt after initially firing? :dontknow:

Depending upon what your answers to all those are, you might be better off just looking for a replacement engine/trans than trying to rebuild that one; altho if your pockets are deep enough, nothing is really un-rebuildable - I've still got my Great-great-Grandfather's axe, and I couldn't tell you how much money's been spent on new handles and axe-heads since he bought it as a young lad waaayyy back when....

Just Askin' ;)

It was running at top speed, which with the turbo was pushing 140, when a lot of white smoke just started coming out. No noise, and no noticeable issues otherwise, so I don't think anything physical broke. I pulled over and then was able to nurse it super slow to a parking spot. It would start, but obviously felt weird. I want to say it felt like compression issues, but I'm no expert and maybe I'm just wishing it's only a head gasket. LOL. Was towed from there. Really hoping to keep it because I got the turbo on it, and I like those years/model the best. For me, the new F3s are too laid back and Ryker is too small. The RS is just right.

Sounds like you juuuust might be lucky, and may not have damaged too much!

A compression test; a leak down test; & checking the coolant for exhaust gasses should reveal a lot, and they're all things you probably could do yourself, if you know which end of a spanner to spin & have/can get the gear. ;) Knowing the results of those tests & therefore the likely items needing replacement might make it easier to convince a local non-corporate-brand motorcycle shop to take on the task. :dontknow:

I know what you mean about that model being 'just right' for you - I'm still sticking with my 2013 RT with an ECU Upgrade for pretty much the same reason!

Why would you need to go that fast on any motorcycle on public roads. You must have a death wish. I see every day in the news some young dumb ass doing things like that and getting killed or killing someone else. 140 mph, really...

Imagine that!
Just "lolly-gaggin" along with the turbo pushing 140, :ohyea:
And out of the "blue", the "white smoke" started coming out! :dontknow:

Do you always drive like that? :lecturef_smilie::thumbup:

Never said I was on a public road so you guys are just assuming stuff now :) As a small side note a long time ago another one of my Can Am is actually in the lake el mirage book for land speed records and it had this same turbo I have on my current RSS now. But anyways, if I don't locate anyone to do it I suspect I will be back for as much DIY knowledge as I can handle. LOL

Was a report years ago: Moto United in LaHabra, CA.
Multiple codes & issues- BRP fail but service shop came through.
Doug and Brian

Nope. They don't want to or can't do over 10+ either. Was super nice on the phone and even gave me two other shops but same deal. That's honestly crazy that there is no support for a motorcycle past 10 years.

There is a tech out that way, not exactly sure what city.

His name is Lou.

Shop is called Pirate Powersports, or maybe Pirate Motorsports.

Reply back if you do not find him, I might get details from him from the FB group.

Quick google search,
Pirate Powersports, Riverside

I'd like to see a picture of the Spyder and of the engine if you're so inclined. :nopic::riding:

I believe the contact information for Pirate Pete is https://nuwber.com/person/563a28867686b0176bf55dbe

Were you are El Mirage earlier this month? I didn't know a Spyder was running. We're running the Eyre's roadster 832. Been trying for two years to run methanol. After breaking an engine in May and another this June we're skipping July but going to Bonneville in August. Will you be there?

I therefore apologise to you as I assumed you were on public roads. I drive a big rig through California quite often and have seen many crashes there.

In my local area there have been 9 fatal motorcycle crashes; most were driving at high rate of speed, and most were males in their early 20's.

Driving in California, motorcycles have come by me so fast and are so loud that I didn't see them coming, and it scares the hell out of me. Anyway, hope you get your motorcycle fixed and be safe out there.

Thank you all for kind words and help. So yes, I located Lou early on, but it took a bit to get him to take it on (because of whole turbo etc...) I think it's still 50/50 but hopefully I can get the bike to him soon. It took a few conversations to see we were more simpatico than he thought. El Mirage was way early when these just came out. I want to say around 2010 +/- we should be there in the official book, and I have to try to find some photos as this was early iPhone years. JB62 I totally feel you. This was the number one reason for the Spyder, it is just way, way, safer than a regular motorcycle. I don't have the bike back yet; but will take engine photos when I do. Regular bike photos are here in an old thread when I was looking to sell the bike back in 2018.

SCTA El Mirage archive begins in 2013 https://scta-bni.org/archived-results

I see an HEGO after the turbo exhaust - was that for your accessory AFR gauge? I assume BRP's HEGO was before the turbo inlet. Did you have any onboard data logging? That's a tidy installation, although not for long rides.

Pretty sure we were earlier than 2013. Techincal stuff is above my pay grade. I had a really good guy who was the service manager at the Can Am dealer in North Hollywood when it was still there, and he just did all the work and rode the bike (not this one though, we had a stripped-down manual '09 thrn, I think) at El Mirage because he had the license to do it. As far as long rides, I've done a couple of hours without any issues.

I am in Glendale area, depending on where you live in Los Angeles, there is Berts Mega Mall in Covina off of Azusa Ave. If you live near the 5 and 14 freeways there is Jetworld Powersports that I have used in the past. They have worked on my 2008 GS installed a new clutch, and they took it out of limp mode. 32203 Castaic Rd, Castaic, CA 91384. There is also Del Amo Motorsports in Redondo beach 2500 Marine Ave. There is also Veys Powersports in El Cajon CA outside of San Diego.

High speed run? That sounds like you have water leaking into your cylinders or heads, so you're going to have to do a complete tear down.
