Another windshield question

:agree: You should only use the duct tape thing as a relatively short term test - ANY adhesive material left on your screen (or tupperware) for too long will present problems for cleaning off once you get around to removing it, but proper Duct tape generally works better and longer than anything else, and even after a month or so it usually takes most of its adhesive with it on removal! :lecturef_smilie:

That said, the adhesive on 'true' Duct tape shouldn't ever dry out while the tape is still in place - it only does that once the tape is removed & any resudue isn't cleaned off straight away, and even then it does generally still take a week or so to lose its 'stickiness' & start turning to congealed cement!! I use duct tape A LOT on vehicles with all sorts of finishes, sometimes for as long as a few weeks or even a month or so, and I've NEVER had any issues with it after the fact because I clean all the adhesive residue off virtually immediately after I remove the tape. If it's safe to do so on the surface the tape has been on, I might use a gentle solvent, but that's pretty rare - usually hot soapy water & a bit (orright, maybe it's really 'a lot' ) of elbow grease is all it takes to sort it. If the sticky residue starts 'pilling' into little sticky balls on the surface during the cleaning process, then another piece of tape wrapped 'sticky side out' around my fingers generally allows me to pick off the pills & most of the other residue before washing again to do the final clean up. :ohyea:

Yes, but are you putting duct tape on a transparent windscreen or on a painted surface? Smooth painted surface typically release and clean well. Transparent plastic require another level of care to prevent scratching that ruins visibility, and for some reason, most tapes stick very well to bare acrylic plastic.

I have no suggestion regarding what to use, so I guess do as Peter stated.

Yes, but are you putting duct tape on a transparent windscreen or on a painted surface? ......

I've been putting it on both for years, on just about every type of (clean) paint, glass, screen, or finish that's ever been used on a motor vehicle, even on my Spyder, both on the tupperware and the OE windscreen, where it's sometimes stayed for 3-4 weeks at a time & maybe a few thousand miles - in all sorts of weather too, including riding thru dust storms, miles of mud, days of hot baking sun, freezing snow/sleet, &/or pouring rain. The OE windscreen is actually better at releasing the non-cloth type polyethelene Duct Tape than the tupperware is, and with sufficient hot soapy water & a frequently rinsed clean micro-fibre cloth, any residual sticky comes off completely & without leaving any marks - if you have to rub hard as opposed to 'lots', then you're doing it wrong!! :lecturef_smilie:

You've gotta be a little more careful with removing duct tape from the tupperware; if there's any dirt, chips, or imperfections in the 'soft' paint that's used on the tupperware (& many other vehicles these days too!) before you stick the Duct Tape onto it and then you leave it for a couple of weeks, when it comes time to pull the tape off you hafta do it very slowly and carefully.... cos doing that too quickly &/or without due care can pull up more of the paint on the edges of the chips &/or imperfections. But the OE windscreen, never an issue with stretching & sticking the tape on; never an issue with peeling it off, and easier residue cleaning too! :ohyea:

There you have it OP, tape it up.

I cut out pieces of cardboard just slightly larger than the holes. I used electrical tape (only on the windshield). Took it for a test ride and it is definitely the holes that causing all the wind noise. I rode for about 15 minutes at 70mph and then took the cardboard off and rode the same way back. Big difference. Neither the cardboard or tape left any residue or marks on the windshield. It shows me I may have to invest in a third party windshield.

Thoughts on Slingmods F4 windshield?

Tinted or not? Vented or not? My only concern over vented is that the vents may generate wind noise

I just spoke with Slingmods and they don't have a 2020 windshield. The F4 doesn't currently work for the 2020. I thought that was the one!

My F4 windshield DOES work on my 2020 RT Limited. I have the standard height, but extra wide vented shield that I installed on my 2014 RTS. The transfer to my new Spyder did require different rubber grommets for the mounting holes which were graciously provided by F4.

That's interesting. The guys there said it wouldn't, but you are the second person I've heard that says their F4 does fit.

This is Don Frank at F4 Customs and yes it will fit just fine. I will contact Sllingmods and update them with the proper info.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hey Don, I'm glad you cleared that up. I really think I need a new/different windshield. The original OEM is generating a great deal of wind noise/roaring through the holes on my 2020 RTL. I covered them and it got much quieter. When I removed the covers, the noise came back. I am looking at this shield: https://www.slingmods.com/canam-spyder-rt-windshield-f4-customs?vehicle=1 Do you think that would that solve my issue? It's a lot of coin if it doesn't. I know the OEM is 25" and I am thinking of the 28" for a little more wind protection and less buffeting from big trucks. But it seems to me (my opinion only) that more shield would catch more wind like a bigger sail. Thoughts?

WingmanRT, Kim and I both ride spyders, me on a F3T and she has a RT. Kim prefers the plus 3 with a vent. This is 28" tall or 3" taller than stock and 5" wider. Remember if you go with a taller shield and wider you still have the adjustment. When I ride the RT and I am 6' tall, I ride with it up most of the time unless we are in slow traffic and then sometimes I move it down and look over to get a little more air. We live in Florida so sometimes you need that extra air.
Give me a call anytime at 941-347-7496 and I would be glad to discuss the options with you.

Don, I contacted SlingMods and I believe they contacted your company. My only questions at this point are: I am also thinking about the 28" tinted. Does the vent (when open) generate a lot of wind noise? That is what I am trying to avoid. The other question is that the F4 28" shield will fit on my 2020 RTL with no modifications? I believe I can replace the shield, but am leery of any drilling, etc.

I did not realize that you guys sold direct.

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone make plugs to fill those holes in the 2020 windshield?

I couldn't find any but that doesn't mean they're not out there. I ended up buying a new F4 windshield. Pretty pricey solution, but I couldn't stand that wind noise any more.

Yes the older RT shields we sold fit just fine on the 2020 RT. Also you will not get any noise out of the 5 position adjustable vent that we put in them. No drilling just take the old shield of and re-install. We sell direct but also have great dealers out there as well.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/363146933895?ul_noapp=true I just saw this on ebay with the vented holes-I was hoping i could get some height as I have a actual vent in the center and don't like it....the one I have is stock and vented in the center but is shorter and narrower than the original--I like more coverage but don't think I'd like the wind rushing up from the open holes

7Jurock will make whatever you want. They just made for me a wider and taller windshield with a flip to my specs and charged no more than if it were a stock one.

I bought a 7Jurock windscreen (stock height/2" wider with a recurve) for my '18 RT. I kept it when I traded. It doesn't flow enough air for NC summers but it should do nicely for winters. I think when spring arrives, I may buy a stock height/wider/tinted/vented F4.

If possible, install the Can Am accessory adjustable side vents.

If the OP wants a vented windscreen, that’s neat too. But from having the side vents on our Spyder, I know they do work.
We just installed the Can-Am adjustable vents. Wish we had done it before our trip this summer, but we can tell there is a BIG difference in rider comfort.

In the "stock" position, they are pretty much like the stock deflectors, just a little bit bigger. Not sure if that is noticeable. In the middle position, there is a HUGE rush of air to the passenger's lower body. In the rear "scoop" position, the rider gets some of that air on the lower body, too. I think it also helps relieve some of the vacuum formed by the windshield, as there is a bit less turbulence.

I have the stock 12" for hot weather; a 7Jurock 16" normal width and a flip for trips and not so hot weather; a 7Jurock 18" extra wide with a flip for cold weather.
