• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I searched around and did not find any references to someone else doing this, so I thought I would post it up. :thumbup:

I have an 08 GS/RS and over the course of my ownership I have been bothered by periodic oil leaks from the air box. I've read the different threads about the cause and solutions available. However, I didn't want to do a catch bottle. It just didn't seem like an elegant solution. Functional, but not quite what I was looking for. I don't care about keeping or discarding the breather line into the air box, since my state does not have annual inspections.

So in short, I took my years or wrenching on motorcycles and put it to work here. What I did was to run about 3' of hose from the crankcase breather port up and along the side of the engine. Up to the area of the instrument cluster and capped it off with a Uni crankcase vent filter. I then zip tied it to hold it in place. That also keeps it away from the hot exhaust. I then capped off the air box input port.

My theory being that the extra distance and elevation would negate the oil being blown up and out of the vent tube with gravity returning the oil back to where it belongs.

After testing, the answer is yes, it works just fine. No oil residue at all and no catch bottle to worry about. The filter is serviceable, but only needs to be washed in soap and water infrequently and is installed dry, so it all should last the life of the machine with virtually no servicing required.

Cost to me was free 99, but that's because I had everything laying around. However, if you were to buy everything I estimate cost would be around $10 or less, if you went with a cheaper filter.

If or when this becomes an issue this will be a great way to go. Not a fan of collecting it nor dumping it along the way. So far have not had a problem but not to say it won't become one...thanks..!! :2thumbs:

a new hose that runs over the air box to the right side of the engine.
where an oil separator-mounted higher if the air filter housing.
the distance from the pipe and angle ensures that the oil is returned to the crankcase breather.
several 100-mile ride, ... everything dry, no oil in the separator
oil level at max line in the crankcase
 
Just to follow up on my own thread. I've now put about 1000 miles on the bike with this in place and have found it to work perfectly with no ill effects. I've topped off the oil and it still did not blow any oil out. I'm very satisified with this modification and will keep it this way. :ohyea:

That's the best fix I have seen and meets EPA standards.
