• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Along Came A Spyder...

I got tired of waiting, and called the dealer today to ask how much longer they were going to hold the Spyder as hostage for the warranty repairs. To my surprise, they said it was ready...four weeks and a day after they got it.

They replaced the second broken windshield, but did not use the newer hardware. This did not please me, but since they also replaced the console, it may have cured the root cause. The new windshield did not crack on the 35 mile trip home, which is more than I can say for the first two. Tomorrow I will remove it and put the CHAD back on.

They installed the parking brake kit, and it works perfectly. I was able to keep the other one going with frequent lubrication, but this one is much smoother.

They were uncomfortable with installing the new deflector to cover the burn spot on the stock muffler, so I told them not to worry. They provided it if I wish to do the job myself. I like a tech that knows his own limits, and worries about my bike like it was his own.

They replaced the console which was scratched at the time of delivery. I'm afraid I threw a monkey wrench in the works when I added the two dash outlets and the comm system under the console, as well as the heated clothing and comm wiring. They took it all in stride and did a nice job. No extra charge, despite the extra time. Forgot to hook the headlights back up, though, so they had to do that before I could leave.

No solution for the temperature gauge that changes incredibly slowly. As long as it doesn't make the Spyder run too lean, I will not press the issue. It is on the books.

They offered to replace the brake pads at no charge, but I declined.

They noted the idle that is erratic and sometimes won't return to anywhere near spec. No solution, but they did create a case number, and want me to monitor it more closely for them. Can do...it doesn't create a real difficulty on a manual trans machine.

While we were there, Nancy ordered a set of the BRP GIVI bags, yellow panel kit, and a comfort seat. The panel kit is in stock at BRP, but the remaining items are backordered, with no potential delivery date shown in their system. Remember the Hindle situation? Hope we get them before summer ends. If we are among the first, I'll give a blow-by-blow account.

Best of all, I rode home! I have not felt comfortable riding a bike since I got sick. Felt A-OK on the Spyder. It was a delight to feel the wind in my face again. I feel more human than I have felt in weeks! I hope Nancy can ride again soon, so she can experience the same refreshed feeling.

I know that you are the Motorbike Professor, master wrencher and can recite from "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", but you may want to go back and read my January 12 write up on installing the muffler deflector. Easy install, but care is required and a heavy duty steel pop rivet tool. Glad to hear you both are recovering. About time to set up a lunch meeting in Marshall.

I will be back to my own 22 motorcycles soon. Nancy has about three weeks to go before she is allowed to try to ride, so I can sneak out the Spyder for a bit more. I am starting to feel better, so I may be able to ride the Beemer with confidence again soon. I have certainly considered two Spyders, but that garage is tres full, and Nancy has imposed a one-in, one-out rule. Too many vintage rides on my bucket list to fill the garage with large three-wheelers...and nothing much I want to get rid of.

The motorcycle therapy was astounding! It is always good, but this was my longest lay-off in years, so this was even better. I didn't need a stereo, I was singing to myself all the way home. I'll be glad when we are both 100% again, that's for sure!

Funny, I've only been riding since 1980, but I've never had a stereo on any bike nor ridden with iPod, etc. I have nothing against them whatsoever, but even on long rides, the therapy is enhanced by the music in my own head. :ohyea:

I have read that post, and I told the tech about it, which is probably why he chickened out. He had also read the instructions carefully before he declined. I have the drill stops and the heavy rivet tool, so it would be no sweat. I just have to decide if I want to bother. Have you had any trouble with leaks at the rivets?

We could have met at our hospital rooms. We were in Marshall at Oaklawn hospital. :D As soon as we're both firmly back on our feet and back in the saddle, we will set up a meet. Nancy will be done with school in a few weeks, so we can meet anytime of day.

No sign of leaks yet. The way the pop rivets went in, I would think they are sealed very well. I'm used to pop rivets that compress material together and these just bruise your hands as you try to get them to break. Good finger strength test. Even though my dealer would not comp the shield (deflector is a misnomer), I'm glad I bought it. Not just because I'm no longer annoyed by the burn spot, it just looks better than the big black can.
 
Glad to hear that you are feeling better Scotty. Here's hoping that Nancy is back on the Spyder soon too.

It appears that the muffler deflector kit is again missing from the BRP site. I checked your links from the January posting AND looked at the parts catalogue. Can find nothing on the kit

It has disappeared from their site which tells me they either got tired of comping them to dealers or realized that the installation could lead to worse problems by nicking the inner can when drilling the mounting holes. BRP really is mixed up on accessories, not only with their inabaility to get them to market when they say, but in deciding which ones they will keep offering.

I took off the new windshield and put the CHAD back on the Spyder today. In the process, I noticed a couple of things. Although the dealer did not use the large flat washers and rubber washers being used on the new Spyders (per BRP's instructions), they did use new screws that had thin plastic washers beneath the heads. The original screws were not like this. The windshield design has also changed slightly. The upper two holes are no longer elongated, but larger round holes instead. This allows the screws to go in without hitting on the windshield itself. By George, I think the've got it! Looks like maybe it would last a while this time araound.
