• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

AliExpress GPS Unit

This is just a warning. You may have better luck than me. I ordered two 5" waterproof GPS units from AliExpress.com. Cost was $132.66 each. After a little over two weeks I received them. (They come from China). One was for a fellow SpyderLover. I hear this one works fine. Mine, not so lucky. It didn't come with North America maps loaded. I could only pick from Ukraine or United Kingdom. I was told via email by their rep that it was probably due to new "colleagues". She attempted to email a link to a map upgrade. The screen shots were in English and some were part Chinese! I don't know Chinese. I couldn't get it to work, my screen didn't look like hers. I'm not a computer person but I tried. She attempted to send me another but couldn't because the file was too big. Then she wanted to send me one via Skype but I don't Skype. I asked her to send me a replacement. She said she couldn't because they could send me updates! She suggested I find a friend to assist me! My question to her was, why should I impose on others to correct their mistake? I think it would be a very good GPS with the correct maps. So this morning I requested a refund. We'll see how that goes...I'm guessing I'm going to be out $132.66. The farkle list at SF just got smaller....

If you paid using a credit card. Your not out one cent. File a claim with the card. Tom :spyder:

Good luck with a refund from an overseas company. I've dealt with alibaba, which is related to aliexpress; but, everything I purchased was a low ticket item, so I would never lose too much money.

EBAY and PAYPAL are you best bet

Buying off EBAY with Paypal is the best bet. If you have any issues with a vendor, you are out no money as EBAY and Paypal will take care of the issue for you.

Hi John!
 I'm sorry to hear that this isn't going the way that you had planned... :gaah:
The best of luck in reaching a successful conclusion: please let us know how it works out!

(I've got some news for you that I'll take care of with a PM...)

Sorry to hear

The contact person is the supplier of the device and that is typical of Chinese responses. They sent it loaded with the wrong sd card for the maps. Be sure to bad mouth them on any review of this product. Often, when these types of vendors see a terrible review, they will send a replacement unit ASAP for you agreeing adjust your review. Also Complain directly with Alli Express about the useless responses from this vendor. Much like Amazon, Alli Express should have a resolution center. Personally speaking, this is a very good GPS.
Alli Express is a first rate vendor that will honor it's return policy as stated.
Please keep us posted if that is not the case with Alli Express.

Your friend in WA contacted me to help her with the set up of her GPS. It was a fun conversation and I think I got her going. If she would report back after getting some travel time with it.

Bummer but Sign up for Skype, its totally free and easy and one of the best free apps in the world! To think 20 years ago that we could video call with anyone around the world totally free! Who would have thought it! That we would be able to do it yes, for free, no way did i envision that. You can even conference with multiple people now and share your screen etc.

Thanks to Dennis

For talking this soooo non techi person through "how to operate". As a non GPS user I have nothing to compare to. But I am very impressed. Sure hope this gets "fixed" for mrfats. He did me a huge favor ordering and getting to me.

Sorry to hear

I received mine yesterday. Mine is fine. I did request that they load the maps for USA, Canada and Mexico and to be wired for US power. Everything works as expected. Try going to naviextras.com. Maybe you can update your maps to US there! Good Luck

I tried that but can't figure out the manufacture of the GPS unit. Do you know what it is? I couldn't find anything on the drop down box that matched. :opps:

Mine came this week. I asked them to load USA Mexico and Canada Maps on mine. The first time I turned it on it thought it was in Italy. I just let it search the satellites for awhile and orient itself to where it really was, then programmed in my home address. It took me there from work just fine. Next I will try something a little more complicated. BTW there is a small brass colored reset button on the back. Try pushing that to see if it will get you back to square one, then turn it on and let it search for your local satellites and see what happens. It already doesn't work so I don't think you can hurt it.

GPS set up

Based on using this GPS software for 3 years, this is how I have it set up. On the navigation screen, open the tools at the bottom, and get the GPS set to the 2D mode and High point of veiw. This will give you about 12 square miles of top view. Up to 1/4 mile in advance you can quickly tell if a road going left or right is productive for your touring direction and goals. When I tour to discover and see the sights on this 5" screen, up to 3 miles away I can see a river road, park, and other things of interest that no other GPS or phone will display on their screens. This has been priceless for me in what I have discovered, and no other GPS software will give you this much overview.
Get real familiar with the tools icon menue. When I'm doing a Route 66 type of type of touring while navigating with a destination, I de-select highways, tolls and such. If the weather turns bad or I'm running late I select all options for the fasest route.
Hope this helps

Update

Sunday afternoon I had a visit from Roger Wenzel (author of SpyderCodes)! He lives 2.5 hours North of me. We discussed our upcoming trip to SpyderFest and he wanted to look about updating this GPS from AliExpress. He worked on it for 2.5 hours but he got it working! Somehow he figured out Chinese!

My new problem is I'm having trouble getting it to Bluetooth. It connects for a second then disconnects. I'm trying to sync it to my IPhone 6.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

:congrats: :2thumbs:

 Wait a minute... He knows how to figure out Chinese also??? :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
When you speak with him, please let him know that I'm looking forward to meeting up with both of you in Springfield...
The clock is ticking.. One Month until we leave!

Oh! I forgot to ask: Mandarin... or Cantonese??? :D
