Air filter

Thinking about upgrading to a "green" or K&M air filter for my 2008 rs se5, everything is stock. Is there any benefits to doing this or should I just stick with the factory one? I am not planning on doing any other mods ( stock exhaust and O2 sensor). Has anyone done just the air filter, what were your results?
Thank you

NEW FILTER

Hi I have the Green filter but that's because of the " Pay it forward " thread of a few months ago....If i was paying real money I would opt for the K&N, I've seen them on-line for as little as $ 45.00 for our spyders....and if you haven't already done the oil breather mod....at least the K&N is designed to get oil on it......also check out my "cold air intake" mod in the MOD SECTION......it costs almost nothing and really helps the engine, especially with a low restriction air filter....Good luck ...Mike....

I have the K&N but i have yet to install it .. To technical for me I guess HA HA HA JK just havent had time I have heard great things about both , but thanks for the Intake Blue im going to check it out

ADVICE

Absolutely go with the advice of a FORMER Spyder owner.....who now owns a " HARLEY ". which as we all know is a PERFORMANCE motorcycle ......Mike.....:roflblack::roflblack:

To get greater performance, it's the 'suck' (air intake) 'bang' (air / fuel mixture) 'blow' (exhaust) factor. All of the above have to be in balance. To do one without balancing out the others is not good for the engine.

The stock and K&N filter leak around the seals, the evoluzione and green filter fit snug. Initially there was only 1 performance exhaust available for the spyder and I got the air filter first. I did notice a difference with the evoluzione only, but was more happy about not finding sand in the airbox.

A free flow air cleaner and/or a free flow exhaust will give you noise, Without the byproduct of,
Horsepower. :roflblack:

Methinks she nailed it!! Way to go, Yazz.

YES HORSE COP WITH

TWO SHELBY COBRA'S , ONE A ROADSTER AND THE OTHER A DAYTONA COUPE....AND THE SPYDER OF COURSE.....;).........MIKE.... AND YAZZ a low restriction air filter is..."not good" ....for the engine......in what way is that possible...Mike....

The Spyder's engine right out of the factory is balanced to BRP's specifications.

You need three things to have a detonation in the cylinders. The spark from the spark plug, oxygen and fuel. Oxygen is very explosive, fuel is a coolant.

To put a low restriction air filter on is going to put more air into the fuel / air mixture going into the cylinders. The EFI is not going to add more fuel into the mixture to balance it out because it hasn't been told to. It thinks there's the same amount of air going is as before.

You are going to get a hotter detonation in the jugs, thus a hotter running engine. Not good

It all needs to be balance out...

Thanks for this insight, but could you expand a bit more for us?

If we have a performance exhaust, high flow filter, what is needed to "balance" the fuel ratio?

isnt that what an oxygen sensor is for? determining a/f ratio and "telling" the computer to increase fuel?

I MUST BE A MORON

DEAR YAZZ, ( YES I KNOW THIS IS IN CAPS) DO YOU THINK THE K&N CORPORATION IS AWARE OF THE DANGEROUS FINANCIAL POSITION THEY ARE IN ...DUE TO SELLING THE 10'S OF THOUSAND' S OF AIR FILTERS TO THE UN-SUSPECTING PUBLIC WITHOUT WARNING THEM OF THE DAMAGE THEY ARE DOING TO THEIR ENGINES. YOU SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING HERE AND NOTIFY THEM OF THEIR STUPIDITY BEFORE THEY GET ANY DEEPER INTO THE FINANCIAL HOLE THEY ARE DIGGING THEM-SELVES. I AM SURE ONCE THEIR ENGINEERS HEAR "YOUR" EXPLANATION THEY WILL IMMEDIATELY STOP SELLING THEIR CRAPPY PRODUCT......SO ALL MY FELLOW SPYDERLOVER'S IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED A K&N AIR FILTER THANKS TO YAZZ WE NOW KNOW THAT WE SHOULD TRASH THEM ASAP......PS DOES THAT GO FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE OIL FILTERS ALSO ....:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::bdh::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:......mike

This is where things get grey. It depends on how your Spyder is running and how you ride it. Is there any pinging / knocking or backfires? Is it running sub-optimal?

You already have the suck and the blow. Just need the bang now. Something to balance the fuel / air mixture to the type of performance exhaust and high flow filter installed. Upgraded O2 sensor? JB? Power Commander? Just depends on what you've put on. Different things work for different set-ups.

Not an electrician, just a mechanic. Others can tell you more about the O2 sensor.

My view? Got Spydee with stock everything and dual Two Bros. Had awesome backfires. Something wasn't balanced out. If the stock O2 had worked in my scenario, no backfires. Got the JB programed with stock air filter and no more backfiring.

Honey, you are on a roll with this thread! :roflblack:

Have nothing against K&N filters. Next best thing to sliced bread. Have one on my Springer. Had the carby re-jetted when the filter and a new set of pipes were put on.

As for high performance oil filters... make sure the micro-mesh is compatible to the type of oil you are using. Don't want undue back pressure.

As for the above rant... :agree:... BUYER BEWARE

Just trying to help folks out here...
