There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Aftermarket Air Filter

When you replace the stock air filter with an aftermarket air filter like the KewlMetal one do you have to do anything like disconnect the battery to reset the computer?

Thanks
JT

Thanks, I was doing some googling and came across a couple of hints that you needed to do something so I was wondering.

JT

Thats right JT its plug and play all mechanical no electrics and it worrks much cooler under the tupperware also.

JT if your looking to get more air volume maybe you should use a taller filter as Lamont did i think it was a fram and a longer screw seemed to work well on the RT.

If you are using or going to use the KewlMetal unit then Jack Goodwin came up with this paper air filter, made for a Briggs & Stratton motor that works perfectly. And the best thing is you can go down to any Lowes and pick one up.

It is a little bit taller than the filter that comes with the KewlMetal unit but it works great. I am running it on my 2012 RT-L and no problems.

I've installed a TBR exhaust, Juice Box Pro (which splices into the injectors, and O2 sensor circuits, and taps into the throttle position sensor wire), as well as a K & N filter...............I probably should have disconnected the battery before I did..................but I didn't. NP so far.

Actually I'm going to make one, Thanks for the info on the taller air filter.

Even though the picture doesn't show it you have about a 10" X 10" square to play with.
About 3.5" of height.

The filter in question couldn't be centered over the Throttle bodies it would need to be offset.
Does that matter? I don't think so, but the filter setups I've seen are centered.

Thanks for the info on the available space. I was assuming you could center the oval filter, but sadly have not had time to tear mine apart to see. Too much work work work... what is the diameter of the filter you have?

Thanks

HUH....???????

This topic has been covered in various small-engine forums for years, such as Polaris RZR, Yamaha Rhino, Tatum Dune Buggies and on and on. There have been numerous posts with pictures showing that dust and sand particles get past K&N and Briggs filters regularly and cause top end failures in as little as 3,000 miles. And always someone chimes in with 'used them for years'. Yes, but was the engine ever torn down and measured ? K&N filters are for Wal Mart and Auto Zone sales people who don't know better. They are cheap junk marketed heavily. I would do one of two things: 1 - stick with the BRP filters 2 - find a TRUCK filter that might fit, which may be tough in a small space. The only reason K&N filters don't get more of a bad rap is, most street driving is not that demanding.. but one pass through a good dust cloud and you have grit in the throttle bodies and there goes your valves, injectors and rings.

Uncle Jay, i'm not sure where you get your info on K&N Filters, but i've used them for over 15 yrs. on my race cars, my pickup's, my street cars, my motorcycles and such... and i've taken a good many engines apart and have not witnessed what you say... how did you come to your conclusion....?

Sorry, have a K&N on my Springer. South of Four Corners went through two sand storms in one day, sand blowing from the right side. And no, you don't stop. It's like a crawling caravan of vehicles, each following the car in front of them till you get out of it.

That was about 20k ago and no major mechanical overhauls to date.

I'm using a Wix #42297 automotive air filter that is also taller on the KewlMetal unit on my RT, Also it cut intake growl down from K&N Filter which is not a bad thing....

I use a K&N filter and works great. I inspect my filter once a year and every two years I clean it and oil it. It's about the same price and it will outlast you and your Spyder. You can order one on Amazon.com.

Without getting into the fray I just want to say I carry the K&N filters. $38.00 delivered for the RS/GS, etc., and $35.00 delivered for the RT models and all 2013's. It is the filter I use.

Is this the washable filter you sell? Also how do you mount it?

JT, when you make one how about making two? :)

Being from the birth place of K&N filters and a dirt bike rider when they first hit the market.....original design was for dirt bikes. I have used them since '69, and it's one of the first things I add to anything with an engine. jm2c
