• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

After 3 years of planning, I am riding Route 66 starting June 8

After plans fell through a few times, I will do my bucket list to do Route 66 - leaving June 8 to Chicago to start the ride.
You should considering posting the dates of the route, section by section.
You might find others willing to meet up with you for a section near them. (y)

I will post the days where I will be. I was going to do 300 miles a day, but I am cutting it down to 200-250 a day. I do plan on going to Madrid, where they filmed Wild Hogs, and to Maggies Restaurant and the Mine Shaft Tavern (the Del Fueso bar).

Don't forget to Stand on a Corner in Winslow Arizona. There is a great ice cream shop across the street from the Flatbed Ford. Be careful in the heat when you get out to the desert. I think you will be happy doing 200-250 mile days. That gives you plenty of time to smell the roses. Enjoy......

This is the 100th Year of Route 66. Most of the States are trying to 'Do it Big'. I know that Missouri has been particularly planning the last four years. Now Arizona is on board.
The starting point in Chicago has a
Refresh as per the internet. I have seen
Lots of information online. Definitely going to be a major event this year.

I too have this on my possible 'someday' travel list. But life is getting
tuffer every month. I will enjoy your posts about this trip.

Stay Healthy and Enjoy your Time.

June in the South West can be heat challenging. I would go to Las Vegas in mid June then kept moving up to May. Even April in AZ can be warm. Good luck. A friend and I would like to do 66 sometime as well

Definitely do your homework about the weather. New Mexico and Arizona are not very friendly on the weather.

Anyway enjoy your Trip on Route 66.

+1 on weather for temperature in the deserts. We left Flagstaff, AZ, in late June: it was lower 50's. By the time we reached the Colorado River, crossing on I40 down the mountain from Kingman, AZ, that day, it was 110°F! At 200-300 miles a day, you should be able to avoid mid-day riding.

Have an enjoyable and memorable adventure!

I will not be pulling a trailer. I am figuring out the days, the milage, and the Hotels. I have changed the places to go and the milage several times. The average will be around 250 miles a day. The first day to Chicago from New Jersey (800 miles) will be around Gary Indiana. Then on to Chicago to the RT 66 sign. I will scan the days and Hotels when I am finished getting the hotels booked. Thank you all for the places to see, and I hope to see some of you on my trip.

So far, I have 2 trips - one is 12 days the other is 10 days (the 10 day trip follows the tour out of Chicago but stops at Amarillo).

Trip 1 - June 9, Chicago to McLean; June 10, Bourbon MO; June 11, Afton OK; June 12, Weatherford OK; June 13, Amarillo; June 14, Albuquerque;
June 15, Lupton; June 16, Winslow; Jun17, Kingman; June 18, Newberry Springs; June 19, Santa Monica Pier.
Trip 1 daily average = 225-250 miles

Trip 2 - June 9, Chicago to St Louis; June 10; Joplin; June 11, Oklahoma City; June 12, Amarillo; June 13, Sant Fa; June 14, Chambers; June 15, Seligman; June 16, Newberry Springs; June17, Santa Monica Pier.
Trip 2 daily average = 300-350 miles

I am thinking Trip 1 will be more fun...

Next step will be where to stay

When you get to Amarillo I'll meet you at the Big Texan... wanna try the free hugemongus steak???
I will let you know when I get there. That was one stop I did not want to miss.

That was a place I wanted to go to. Thanks for the Info on the Ice cream.

Either route would work for me.

I have a personal interest in visiting Bartlesville, Oklahoma to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Price Tower.

It's currently closed for renovations, but hopefully it'll be open by Summer!

NJ to the head of Rt66 in Chicago is ~12-14 hours (800 mi) of saddle time.
It is doable in 1 day but your pace looks like you may need to plan a 2nd day to Chitown.
BTW, I have that route all mapped in GPX segments if interested. You can drop in your POIs along the way.

I am thinking of driving to South Bend - Gary IN for the first stop, then to Chicago the second day.
I think you sent me those but I could not get Base Camp to load and view on the Garmin GPS.

I still have Basecamp installed on my computer but gave up on it.
I asked Google how to import a GPX file into a Garmin 396 and it said:

  • Computer (Recommended):
    1. Connect the Garmin 396 to your computer via USB cable.
    2. Open the device drive (labeled Garmin or zumo).
    3. Copy and paste your .gpx file into the Garmin/GPX folder.
    4. Disconnect safely and restart the GPS.
    5. On the GPS, go to Apps > Trip Planner > Menu (three lines) > Import to make the route active.
There was also a section on using Basecamp and one on using the Garmin Explore App on a smart phone.

I plug my 595 into my PC, run Basecamp, and once the PC 'sees' the 595, I drag & drop my routes directly to the 595 'user data' folder that (should be) listed on the left border library. I don't know what the 396 connect capabilities are. Basecamp is at end of life but I still use it a lot.
If the 396 has a removable SD card, you can copy the files to the /garmin/gpx/ folder on the SD card.
