A new Spyder owners disease...its called Lamonster-itis

I seemed to have caught this nasty disease.
It's when a Spyder owner absolutely cannot leave his bike alone.
He is compelled to do things to it, to change it...to make it better, stronger, faster. ;D

Here is my latest mod that I did in my garage last night.
I took the rear fender off

Using the existing license plate bracket, I adapted it to fit under the tail lights

Im stoked with how it turned out. The tail lights are bright enough to light the license plate.
And I think it has a much meaner, tougher look to it.

Help me..this disease is spreading...I've already got a list of about 7 other things that "need" to be done.
;D

Looks great. You might want to get a load on her to make sure the plate doesn't hit the tire on those big bumps. ;D

I rode it last night when I finished it, just to make sure.
I weigh 230lbs and it had more than enough clearance.
Even going over speed bumps it was perfect.

Way cool - Some one actually taking off and not putting on more "Stuff' i HAVE ALSO TAKEN OFF ALL THE cAN-am/Spyder decals to clean up the look. How about some more detail on what you did - I want to do the same.
Bill from Denver

Hey Bill,
The one thing that Lamonster does (which really helps) is take pictures of the process.
I, however, was not smart enough to think of doing that until I had already finished the job.

It was pretty damn easy to remove the rear fender...you can see all the bolts. 4 on the fender itself, two on the right side of the strut and I think, 3 on the left side.
A couple on the left side were hard to get behind with a wrench, because of the belt drive, but if I had smaller hands it would have been easier.
Once you have the entire unit off the bike, you will have to disconnect the wiring for the license plate bulb (again, pretty easy to figure out)...then the unit comes completely off.
There is a black plastic piece that holds the brakes lines and additional cables, that runs on top of the swing arm on the right side of the bike. Take the two screws off and take the license plate bulb wires out of that holder. Then screw the holder back onto the swing arm.

Then the only tough part....there is a support frame screwed onto the underside of the fender itself. I needed to cut off the end piece of that bracket...but only the part that supports the license plate behind the painted piece of plastic (what you see in my pictures). Then I took my dremel tool to the fender itself and cut off the part for the license plate..making sure to leave enough room for the support bracket on the back and enough plastic on the top for mounting.
I screwed in the rear support bracket using the license plate screws and then cut (again, with the dremel) a couple of notches on the top of the piece, so that I could bend the plastic back and create a lip for mounting.
I took off the big, black plastic piece thats under the bike, but above the tire....drilled two holes in the bent part of the new license plate holder and a matching two holes in the underside piece and screwed them together...then put it all together.
While I had the black underside piece off.....I ran the wires for the license plate bulb back up there and tied them off....just in case I needed them at another time...so they are completely hidden, but not cut anywhere.

The end result came out really nice and really clean.
The only real casualty to this whole process was the rear plastic fender...the struts are fine and re-usable if needed. But I figured that the rear fender can easily be replaced if I had @#$%'ed it up too much and none of this worked out.

If I left anything out...feel free to let me know and I'll answer whatever else i can.

I have to admit... that does look pretty good.

Any chance that rocks or anything can be kicked up though? something that the rear fender would prevent?

I rode it again today through some water and i didn't get a drop on me.

If you look at where the back of the tire ends...rocks or water or anything for that matter would have to come all the way around the rear end of the bike.

Now...if only Lamonster would spill the beans a little more about these larger front tires and rims.....It might save some people alot of money...especially the people who are about to go buy the only fancier rims they have available right now.

i see you changed your can!!! is that a warrior can? I am looking for one of those. just hit 400 + miles and the hot spot is showing on the stock muffler....

alright Lamonster....how much do you want for one of those?

I think I paid $120 for the one I have on my Spyder now and I think I got the last one for $75. I'm going to be selling the one I have on my bike now that's all welded up for $175.00

So when will it be for sale and are you selling just the one on your spyder?

Diggittt

I can sell you just the can now if you want and the one on my bike in a week or two.

Lamonster...I'd like to buy one of the cans right now.

Just let me know how much. I can pay through Paypal if you have that.
I could also give you my Fed-Ex number to handle all of the shipping.

Email me if you would. [email protected]

Thanks,
Rick
