There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. A Dead Horse Post? But, am going to beat it anyway

Thinks out loud
Coming up on the first 'two year' 14,000 mile service. Pondering....whether to check valves are not? BRP says that's the time and to check more often when operating at 6K plus 10% of the time. May be in the 3% range of that, considering total run time. Spend, or save and chance it. Hmm? What to do.

:bdh:no name nag

sydee is two years old but the mileage will have been reached in 7 months riding time..

I am probably the loudest advocate for not doing the 14,000 mile valve check. I did it on my first 2008 at 12,000? and no adjustments were needed. I did not do it on my 2009 or my 2010 at that point. I did do it at 28,000 miles on the 2010 and no adjustments were needed. There have been some others that have found the same results at 28,000 miles and I believe one did a check at 42,000 and found no adjustment needed.

It's a crap shoot, your money, your decesion. Let us know what you decide to do.

Mine is still in the shop waiting for a new, improved clutch pac. I just got back from a 7,200 spyderfest ride pulling a trailer riding 2-up. I needed a rear tire on the trip and two new front ones when I got home. I took mine in for the 14,000 checkup at 19,000 mile. the valves did need adjusting. We all new up front that a $28,000 bike would cost $$ to maintain.

Jer,
"AK"'s right... it's a crap shoot, and it's yours to make...
Me? I'm waiting for another 10,000 miles or so... I run my bike pretty easy, and I've been around valvetrains that did need attention; so I'm keeping an eye out for indications that all isn't well in Paradise...

Yea, not being a tight wad. Just, hate throwing it away. Could add a lot of safety lights, or?, with those bucks. That's where my heads at.

Edit: One thing is for sure. If your tech said the valves needed adjusting I have no doubt they did. He has my full faith and confidence. Need more out there like him.

Little checking..!!

I have a stethescope with a long needle end with which you can listen to engine noises. I have listened to the valves on untold numbers of bikes and adjusted as needed. The best sign is a noticeable difference between valves or noisy ones. Shim under buckets tend to last longer between adjustments sadly you have to tear the top end apart to get to them thus the expense. Unless you have a box full of assorted shims and the corresponding charts it's not a job for the weak at heart. Sooo once again it's a crap shoot..have had ours a short time and only 6500 miles so have not even listen to them....good luck on the toss..!! :roflblack:

Have the Dr. Welby equipment but don't think I can hear the valves through the tennitus :roflblack:

Just had my 14,000 mile maintenance done and did not have the valves checked. When I told the tech and Service Manager that I did not want the valve clearance checked the SM told me that they don't check the valves anymore unless the owner specifically requests it because they have yet to find a Spyder that needed the valves adjusted. I still may have them check the valves at 28,000 miles, but if the Spyder is running fine, I may not.

Here's another twist on the valve adjustments.

Took the bike in at the end of the season--did the valve check at 28,000. Dealer said no adjustments necessary. This was about 2 weeks before the end of riding season (snow).

Took bike in today. Needed new tire and wanted them to address a small oil leak which I noted on the floor of garage. Have put 2000 miles or so on it so far this season. They tell me part of the oil leak is the valve cover gasket. Guess who screwed that up when they did the valve check? :roflblack::roflblack: They need to keep the :spyder2: overnight this time--so the jury is out about costs on the oil leak hunt.

I will let you know more if it gets interesting.

SpyRyd this is the same thing my dealer said when I had my 14K service done. He said he would put a stethoscope on it during the service but said he had not ever actually adjusted valves at that mileage.

We recently (B4 SpyderFest 2013) had the Valve Check done for the 1st time at 32,000 miles and was told all was within spec  So like many others have stated, the dice are in your hands and are yours to roll :ohyea:

Has anyone ever actually asked someone from BRP why they are putting the valve check on the maintenance schedule at this interval as it hardly ever needs done and in fact many dealers are not even doing it? This sounds like another deal where BRP is not listening or paying attention to the owners or especially the dealers. While they did adjust the oil change interval, it sounds like someone at HQ needs to render and adjustment to the adjustment schedule.

Yes, a few of us went up to the reps in Chicago at the event. They stated, that's the required interval according to the manufacturer since the engine is a high revving engine.

I can see the need for inspection if the engine was actually powering a plane but it isn't. You aren't going to fall to the ground on a Spyder.
