6k service

Took my spyder in today - getting the triple play and the fender tips from magic man put on. Also, getting my 6k service. I'm surprised they said they have to check the valves already and may have to shim it if not in tolerance. Kind of concerns me snce they have never performed a 6k on a spyder yet. Has anyone else had to haveany adjustments(shims) put on their spyder at 6k?

Just had my 6k and valves were checked as per service manual. They did not need adjustment. A couple of days after I had a relay go bad and nothing worked on the bike. Called the service dept. and they were out within the hr. picked it up. Fixed the next day and I'm back on the road. The funny thing to this story is they are not the dealer of purchase, who on a prior problem told me that it would be up to me to get the bike to them. I guess thats why they are not getting anymore of my $$$. The guys at Fun Bike Center in San Diego have been great for me.

What's the going rate for the 6k service? I've had 2 different dealers give me 2 totally different prices. One said $240 and another said $600.

I have a service policy so I don't know the exact cost. When I took the policy I was told the cost was $600-$700 but I think that was if thet had to do an adjustment. Looking at what was actually done I would think the $240 cost would be more reasonable. I would check with your dealer to see if this is the case.

The thing that worried me is that the dealer that quoted me $240 seemed like that haven't worked on any Spyder yets. They had 2 new ones on the floor, but the service manager took 15 minutes to figure the price and even had to go inside and look at the prices of oil. So I'm a little leery of what they know. My dealer has moved a lot of Spyders and they seem to know whats up when it comes to servicing them.

I don't have a Shop Manual, but I would be very suprised if the valves are not equipped with screw adjustment.
A service dealer that I used for my Yamaha charged me for shims on my 1100V-Star and when I did some of my own work on it, found that the valves did not have shims. Needless to say, I went back for my labour and parts charge for that part of the service. (The Dealer is no longer in business, but I never did go back to them).
Lamonster can probably confirm if the valves are adjustable, shims or hydraulic. Just seems a little too hi tech an engine to have shims to me.

Yep, be surprised. The Spyder does require shims to adjust the valves. The substantial labor just for checking them, and way more $$$ for adjustment, is due to the time involved. This stuff isn't easily exposed like on most motorcycles. The price quoted sounds typical of what I have heard, even on the low side. Have not had it done, myself, and may do my own when the time comes.

If I remember correctly, my dealer said it would be around $200+, as well. But, no more than $300. But, I could be mistaken.

3 hours labour to just check clearences and if needed another 2 hours to take cams off and replace a shim or two. If your dealer is honest then do the math. Add an oil change and the mechanic might add more time but hey, while the oil is draining lots can be done.

I have yet to hear of any Spyders needing the valves adjusted.

Exactly. Especially with a solid engine like the Rotax. I just had my 6K service done, and the dealership provided me with the option of having them check the valves or not. The valve check would have added $400 to the service cost, so I took my chance and told them to skip the valve check.

And if I have an engine failure due to the valves not being checked at 6,000 miles, I'll eat my hat and put it on YOUTUBE.

Now we need someone with some technical know-how to record checking their valves and post it as a how-to video. There is no way I'm paying a dealer more than $100 to check the valves.

Merry Christmas to me

I just got my spyder back from it's 6k service.

Well, it went well - valves were good!:clap: But after the Spyder triple play kit;
Fender tip kit; Battery tender and Leads put on battery for it; and both tail lights replace (that was for free- under warrenty). I gave myself an $800 present.
BUT IT LOOKS SO NICE!:coffee:

I am so glad you are happy with your lights from NoMagicNeon. I just love mine. My husband put in the Triple play and rear center Light for me but I put the Fender Tipz on all by myself. It is a bit of work and it is always a hassle when you have to take panels on and off but is sure will save you some labor costs. It isn't that it is all that hard, just time consuming and labor intensive, but the more you do it, the better you get at it. Trust me, we are becoming very good....LOL
