600 Mile Service WHAT?

WEB-WVR

New member
For us 998 V-twiners:

Can anyone provide a list of what is done on the first 600 mile service ? (I used the search function and cant find any)

Some are being quoted 500.00 + 200 more for an oil change, etc for first service. A list would be nice to ascertain if on that initial first service if the owner is capable of doing it.

Asking for myself and other v-twin owners. :spyder2:

Thanks !

The $500 plus $200 is an absolute rip off. Most report $350 or less. I believe it is discussed in the manual. I do not have a copy here at the desk to give a page number. I do believe information will be on the way shortly though.:popcorn::popcorn:

To quote an esteemed SL contributor, "You paid for the manual, you should get something out of it." OTOH, if you'd mentioned the make and model of your Spyder I'd have told you the exact page where you can find the info.

I have a 2014.

I realize in the manual is the basic maintenance schedule....but I dont believe that covers everything the dealer is supposed to do AND check at the 600 mile service. From past motorcycles I owned I know they often check various bolts for torque specs as an example. The 600 mile service is certainly more than just an oil change.:banghead:

I am looking for a list of everything the DEALER is supposed to do per the factory for the 600 mile service on the v-twins.

Not everything is in the owners manual and I dont have the service shop manual.

I thought this info will help some decide whether to do it themselves or not.

I have read the manual completely 3 times and referenced it many times (and I have only had the Spyder 4 1/2 months) not all specific information is in the owners manual.

I would love to purchase a hard copy shop manual for my specific Spyder (have done this before for other bikes) but I guess they dont offer one....only digital. :spyder2:

Look at the maintenance section of the manual Page 104 onward.
Search 600 mile service on the forum this topic has been discussed forever. It all depends on your dealer what you pay $300-$500 are numbers that have been mentioned before. You can always call around to different dealers. I drove 2hrs to get mine done.

This is in the manual. Sorry it was in chart format but did not copy that way. IF this is all to the 600 mile check.....I see no reason why an owner could not do it. A few pages later in the manual is a sheet for the Dealer tech to sign and they strongly suggest a dealer do this service.

Any problems if you did NOT use a dealer for future warranty work ??????????

From 2014 ST-L manual:

Maintenance is very important for keeping your vehicle in safe operating condition.Proper maintenance is the owner's responsibility. Perform periodic checks andfollow the maintenance schedule. The maintenance schedule does not exemptthe pre-ride inspection.WARNINGFailure to properly maintain the vehicle according to the maintenanceschedule and procedures can make it unsafe to operate.

BREAK-IN INSPECTION - 1 000 KM (600 MI)Using BRP Utility and Diagnostic Software (B.U.D.S.), check fault codes and installrequired updates.Replace engine oil and oil filter.Inspect and clean the oil tank strainer.Replace the Hydraulic Control Module (HCM) oil filter (SE5 model only).Check engine coolant level.Inspect throttle twist grip operation.Check lighting system (brake light, hazard warning light, turn signal lights, positionlights, license plate light).Check operation of control switches.Inspect the drive belt condition and its tension. Adjust if required.Check tightening torque of the rear wheel axle nut.Check steering for abnormal play.Check parking brake operation. Adjust as required.Check body panels looseness.Check operation of storage compartment latches, hinges and key barrels

Thanks, that is what I found.....could not import it as you did. If that is all there is to it...other than computer diagnostics and downloads.....anyone see an issue with the owner doing the rest ? Most of that is just check this check that.

Thanks for posting that chart !

Unless you are a BRP mechanic you cannot do it. You do not have a BUDS system. There is a sign off in the manual for the tech that did the first one for a reason.Sure you can do the oil changes but will the mechanic sign off on them? There are a lot of bolts to check. Mine was not assembled correctly. Personally I would pay for the first one because if there is a warranty issue after that and it is not entered in BRP's system.....

The checklist for the '14 St is the first attachment and the second attachment is for the '14 RT. They look to me like the critical ones for both Spyders. The additional ones for the RT are likely because of the extended interval although I would think checking front wheel lugs nuts. would be on all models. Checking tire pressure is an owner responsibility but it probably should be on there with lug nuts by the dealer.

Might not be a bad idea to take both lists with you and ask why the technician should not do the RT ones that in reality may be done despite the fact that they are not listed on the ST list.

I tend to agree with your suggestion to have the first one done by a dealer. If you look at the list, there are only 2-3 items that I would say a dealer must do or should probably do. But the rest....why pay a dealer $65-100.00 an hr. to make sure your lights and latches work properly....as an example.

Thanks everyone for their posts....this was not just for me but to help others as there were some questions in another section on the forum.

The Service Manual for the 2010/11 Spyder RT isn't clear on which procedures can be performed by owner/dealer.

Ask the service department to print you a copy of the checklist for your reference. This should not be a problem for them.

I just copied and uploaded the three pages of maintenance chores which include the initial service and it actually tells you whether to change, replace, check, etc. Why the heck does someone then tell the OP to ask his service dept to print a list off? I am not sure why folks bother to answer questions.

Always feel break in should be done by dealer. If you can do the oil change yourself and have the dealer sign off I suggest doing that as you may get a lower price.

That Is correct

Shopping...

you need to check around. Many dealers many prices but for sure have them do the first service. The chart in the manual lists many things the customer can do but depending on your abilities and desires you can choose what you are and are not comfortable with. when they log onto buds the info is transmitted so when your vin# is run they have those records. Last time I hooked up to buds it said I had not had any service work done in 790 hours of operation. :yikes: its what happens when you do your own work. Now its my word that all the maintenance was done if I ever sell...but then she and I will ryde off into the sunset anyway...:2thumbs:
