4,600 mile service

Just had my 4,600 mile service done today. It was $348. Is that pretty common? It took over 4 hrs, but it shows they only charged me for 3 hrs labor.

I just checked on my cost for this service back in early 2012 and it was $213.39. Here is a list of the work they did at that time.

That's why I did my 4600 mile myself. Cost me less that $100 in parts and about 2 hours work. If you look at what needs to be done at 4600, it's not hard. Since I check my Spyder for codes every time before I power off I was not worried about getting it checked with BUDs. I plan on doing my next service myself as well. Debating on doing the 12,000 mile myself at this time should I decide to skip the valve check. That will probably be based on if my extended warranty is over which it probably will be by 12,000.

I know that doesn't help you much just explaining that I too don't like the cost of general service on these things.

I'm glad I took mine to the dealer for the 4600 mile check. The tech found that my water pump was seeping oil. He ordered the parts and scheduled the installation of the parts later in the same week. All was covered under warranty.

Based on reading here on SL, don't expect the new pump to fair any better. The weep hole seems to be a common issue. Some folks after 3-4 water pump replacements just live with it! So far I have been lucky here. I inspected mine at 4600 miles and no leakage. Replacing the water pump is a JOB so if that did happen to me I would get it fixed by the dealer too under warranty. Glad they caught it and fixed it for you. Sound like you have a good dealer :)

Bob,
I'm very happy with my dealer, RPM in Albemarle, NC. They didn't actually replace the whole water pump but installed a seal kit. I've got the 9,400 mile checkup coming due shortly and I am sure they'll check the water pump again, I've heard the horror story's too. I've got the Best warranty for another three years so I'm covered.

Sounds a little high, unless they had to replace something, average for a 13 should be 240 - 280

Even that is high in my opinion. If you look at the service schedule for 4,600 mile and I wont quote it to the letter but:
1) Change the oil and filters.
2) Check the front wheel lug nuts.
3) Adjust the belt if required.
4) Buds check for codes.
5) There are some other "inspections" but they are simple and you should be doing those as a user yourself anyway.

The only way these prices will change is if BRP ever allows independent service and competition for service! For that to ever happen, having access to BUDs is the key. Right now they are holding a monopoly on service! I have said before that this is federally illegal in the US but not everyone agrees with me on that.

Look warranty repair at a dealer I understand! But general service needs to allow independents! It's just not right to be "captured and raped".

The tech said he had to update the codes and do something with the fuse box. He had the whole front end off. My wife and I went for a ride tonight and I discovered the electronic frunk release does not work now. Would the updates disable this for some reason? I know they took it off on the 2014's. I knew the service was going to be pricey when I bought it. I do not regret the decision. My wife and I love it.

No, your dealer just did a poor as usual job of putting your bike back together. Take it back and get it fixed. They had the trunk release apart to do the fuse block recall.

And tes, $348 for a simple oil change is robbery. It does NOT take 3 hrs for a trained mechanic to do one. Does not take ME 3 hrs to do one and if the dealer is charging for hours not required, that is just dishonest. Par for the course I have found in Spyder service.

I'm pretty happy with my dealer so far. They've been pretty good to me. I also don't have many options as the only other one that is close, never called me back. That is why I went to Metro, and they are 75 miles away, so it isn't very convenient for me to just drop in when I have 3 hrs of just riding time. I talked to the tech today, and he said he will look at it when we go up on May 10 for their annual breakfast open house. It is just so frustrating when it was working BEFORE I took it in for service. It would be nice if I could find another Spyder Ryder that is nearby to help in matters like this.

All I can say is that's one expensive oil change. You can do all the "checks" yourself...from my personal observations from motorcycle techs working on motorcycles, once the oil and filter have been changed, and the eyes roll over the unit, the bike is parked and the next one worked on. I do my own oil changes for about $60.

Depends..!

on your area and the shop rates there. Sounds about right and there is a lot of checking they should do. Now if they do it or not is the question. An oil change and letting buds tell you things are good is not worth it. I always let them do the first service after that do things myself. I do have them hook it up to buds for updates and stored codes. Many codes are stored and you never see them. It's done..relax have them fix what they broke and ryde...:ohyea:

If you check for codes before shutting your Spyder off, you can log codes before they get stored. I check every time just to see.

I got my bike from them as well, but don't service there since I''m in VA.

Now I would say thats an expensive oil change---right?

Frunk

after they did that fuse box recall done on mine the electric release didn't work either, I called the dealer about it but had to leave the message on voice mail with no reply from them yet.
