Well I did it in two, I met a buddy of mine and ended up with over 1350 miles in 2 days, I have not been day tripping it too much this year so I was sore as **** the first day out. Just so everyone is a aware because I was not, some of MI is in eastern time. and I could not do 600 in 8 hours with the mild rain delay.

Deb and Brian did a bang up job with this even with the bad weather and easy going time line group. Thanks for a great time, Paula was riding great and also especially Gene who was always there... and yes always talking. Love ya my friend.

I'm a Video Idiot!

On Friday I hit the wrong button onthe GoPro and got 2 pictures instead of a video of us all crossing the bridge together. Today I had the opportunity for a redo. The weather was spectacular not a cloud in the sky there were jet boats sending up big rooster tails of water, sail boats gliding across the sparkling blue water and even a brave soul parasailing and I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON AGAIN. No video. I did get a video of the tunnel of trees but instead of 4 short ones like I thought I had I have one giant 20 minute video that I will not be able to upload. Here are some photos

Back home

Hi Deb and Brian,

We arrived home at 7PM tonight, we went as far as Sarnia last night and left there aroung 8:30 this morning. We ran into heavy, heavy rain last night about 6 or 7 miles before we got to customs and none of us had rain gear on so we were all soaked. It was just getting dark and we couldn't tell we were going into rain until it just came down in a cloud burst I was leading and my glasses and windshield were just impossible to see thru. They also were doing road work just before getting to customs with a detour and cones set up but with the lights and heavy rain we could not see the road markings or anything and I missed the turn so we ended up searching for our way back to where we needed to be and then after going thru customs we did the same thing looking for the motel and it was still raining very hard but eventually we made it safe and sound........but very wet!! :(

We split of from Ken in Batavia, NY and he was going to push on for a while longer but doubted that he would try to go the whole distance to his house tonight. I tried several times to call him after we got home but it always went to his voicemail so I'm not sure if he was still ryding or just couldn't hear his phone. I'm hoping he calls us tonight, but if he doesn't I will call him tomorrow.

I just want to tell you again what a super few days it was with eveyone out there and what a great job you did planning and organizing every thing and keeping track of everyone. What a wonderful bunch of people there also, we really enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone. Spyder people are the best!!;) Hope to be able to do it again next year!

Again thank you for a great time!!!
Love my Spyder!

Glad to hear you guys made it home. That rain was coming from behind you that's why you didn't see it. Please be sure to have Ken let us know that he got home okay. We had an absolutely gorgeous day today it was too bad we couldn't have swapped out Saturday for today. It was fun riding with you and I hope we see you again at another event.

Second, you might be interested in our adventures after we left everyone to start home. The ride on the way to Sarnia (we loved the highways in Canada so wanted to return via Ontario) where we thought we would spend the night was uneventful. As we approached Sarnia we saw a great, brownish cloud ahead in the twilight. We should have stopped then to put on our rain gear but didn't. What a storm it was! I've not seen the intensity of that rain in many years. It pounded us.

We had made reservations at a motel in Sarnia so we figured if we could get across the border -- even though we were soaked -- we could dry off and get a night's sleep. Approaching the border was a nightmare: shiny roads broken with construction, potholes and barriers. It was so dark and the rain was so dense that we couldn't see the lines on the road. It is understandable, then, that we missed the turn to the border. I suggested that I thought I could return us to that turn so I took the lead. Instead, the route I followed took us through one of the less desirable neighborhoods of the city but we finally did get back to the border. Then we had to find the motel -- Jim Van Cise was leading -- and the route he followed took us through a more middle-class section until we arrived at the motel.

On Monday morning we got started around 8:30, drove through Ontario without any problems. The border lines were long so we waited about an hour there but finally got into the US. Going east on the NY Thruway, I had decided to peel off at Batavia going south to NJ. Jim, Nancy and I said our goodbyes and I headed out. The further south I rode the stronger the threat of rain so I stopped to put on my rain gear. There were intermittent rain showers through the southern tier of NY so I decided to find a motel room for the night. Thinking I would have no difficulty on a Monday night in NY state, I stopped at a motel in Corning, NY where I had stayed before. They were full. The clerk -- trying to be helpful -- called two other motels. They were full.

I continued on to Horseheads, NY were there were many motels; I was sure I could find a room. I stopped first at a Holiday Express; they had one room and the price was $229 for the night!! So, on to other motels. I called 9 of them in the area and not one had a room. I began to get desperate: it was getting dark and began to rain fairly hard. I figured if I could get to Binghamton there would be plenty of rooms available but the going was slow and dangerous. Stopping at a gas station I started calling again and finally found a room in Owego, NY.

This morning, it was also raining (this storm that had hit the East Coast dropped 8 inches of rain on NYC in a few hours breaking all previous records) and continued to rain off and on all day. By the time I drove through Philadelphia I was tired, damp and cranky. All I wanted to do was to get home.

The final episode in this long narrative was crossing the Walt Whitman suspension bridge between Philly and NJ. Almost unbelievably, the sun was shining as I approached the bridge but there was a severe rain shower ON the bridge itself. The winds were blowing south at 45 - 50 mph and the rain was mostly horizontal. Semi-trucks were being blown out of their lanes by the blasts and the the Spyder rocked side to side. Somehow we all got across ok but at the foot of the bridge was a two-car accident with both cars on their flattened roofs and with two casualties lying in the road.

I finally did get home at 1:30 PM a bit wet and much wiser. I drove 2445 total miles and loved almost every minute of it. Deb and Brian created a great weekend filled with memorable rides, sights and friends. What could be better than that? It was a delight to meet you all; you made the trip worth the effort.

Ride safely and thanks again.

ken tompkins.

ps: I apologize for the length of this post.

Ken, I'm glad you made it home in one piece. We went through Port Huron a few weeks ago and even in the middle of the day the construction was a pain. I missed the exit for the bridge too . It seems like the rain we rode in on Saturday was mild compared to the storm that hit southern Michigan. Of course Monday and today the weather has been absolutely perfect.Joe and I really enjoyed meeting you and Jim & Nancy and we look forward to riding with you again. Brian and Deb certainly did a fabulous job of organizing the event.

Great write up, Ken

What a great write up, Ken, and I loved your captions under the pics. especially the one you titled "Headache"......poor Gene wanting friends so badly!:roflblack: Although let us not forget his little buddy "Pee Wee Herman".....a friendship that will live on in infamy....and they really are right for each other!!

We had a great time ryding with you and loved your stories....you really have a talent for being very descriptive and entertaining. I was so glad you asked us to go with you. The whole trip was very memorable and we met so many new friends. I'm glad you made it home safe and sound although maybe a "little" wet. I hope we can get together again before the ryding season is over.

BTW, Happy Anniversary to you and Nancy and may you celebrate many more!!:congrats:

We had a wonderful 4 or 5 days ryding with you......rain and all!

Jim and Nancy

Glad to hear all you east coasters made it home safely...Monday must've be a day for taking wrong turns...I got all turned around Rhinelander, WI, luckily while pulled over and checking mapquest, a couple came along on their morning walk and re-directed me to Hwy 8. I would've used the GPS, except it got so wet on Saturday that it wasn't working very well (it'll dry out and be fine again now that I'm home!).

I can't wait for the next opportunity ride with all of you again!

Thanks Deb and Brian

OH KENNY did you know:

We took the boat over to Mackinaw Island for dinner and some walk around time.
Well word got out that RTGENE is coming and here they are telling everyone here he is.
They are so happy to have their picture taken with RT.
Its moments like this that make these spyder trips special for everyone who rides with me.

Gene you took hundreds of pictures and this is the one you pick to share with us. How about sharing some that you took with one hand while riding across the bridge.

OK then

Wiliest all were sitting around the fire pit I was out working to get frame-able pictures to share.
I was dinner for the Michigan's state bird (The Mosquito)---
The pictures:
Crossing the bridge---looking thru the grate to see the green water below----beautiful day full of puffy clouds---night shots of the bridge and light house.---
Then the best of Thursday------So Ken proceeds to educate me on the Coney-------you know the one Deb told me about--- well this is the place Mom and Pop work an love.-------
Anyway Ken tells me that in Europe some place they call rabbits --coney's------and con men refer to their victim's as coney's.-----Not the Coney Island lore.
I checked they are not made of rabbits-----they are all American scrape meat. They are also covered with a meat sauce and onions. Good Grief they are really good. I got along with the girls that work there so I could get extra onions.
