2021 RTL going back for another warranty fix

Just took my 2021 RTL in on Thursday for the recall on the brake light switch. Drove it home and parked it until getting ready for my ride on Saturday. As I go to check for a pair of gloves, the handle breaks off in my hand. Frustrating, but not unexpected, as my 2 riding buddies have matching 2020 RTL's and have had to get both latches replaced on their bikes. Just frustrating having to keep a bungee cord in the saddle bag, not knowing when there will be an issue. This is my 6th spyder (2014 RT, 2012 RSS, 2- 2016 F3t, 2016 F3L Special Series, and now 2021 RTL), and I have to say the most problematic of them all. I love the bike, but the quality is just not there in comparison to the earlier models.

What handle? There was a problem with the latch and there is a simple fix. Shawn Smoaks had a video of it last year.

The latch to the front of the saddle bag. I have heard of some of the fixes, but with these being newer bikes, we should not have to be doing fixes ourself. I understand maintenance such as lubing the cables and such, but these things breaking is unacceptable.

I'll be taking my 2018 RTL into the dealer on Wed to have the frunk looked at. It jammed on me while I was at the rally in Deadwood. A local dealer was able to get it unjammed, but it would still not latch. I don't know if it's the actual locking mechanism, the cable or both. I'll let those guys figure it out.

Well, after having my latch "fixed" by cleaning, lubing, and adjusting it, I got 3 good openings out of it. I was able to open it in their shop, open it while packing for the trip, and opening to take the bike cover out. When I needed something else from the saddle bag, while on the trip, it would not open. Going back to the shop on Saturday for them to fix, their fix. I was smart enough to not put anything that we necessarily couldn't do without on the trip. Otherwise I would have been even more pissed at the dealership and BRP in general. It should not be this hard to get a set of working saddle bags.

That is plain frightening, blacklightning, since this is a known issue and has a BRP documented fix. You really do wonder about the competency of some dealerships. Hopefully they can fix it permanently this time.

I wonder if the bureaucracy of BRP is making dealerships paranoid of warranty issues and not getting paid to put replacement parts on these vehicles to actually fix things. I’m only saying this because I had a seat lift spring replaced under warranty due to weakness and here I am just a couple of months later with the same exact problem. The engineers and the pencil pushers need to have some serious discussion on part quality issues and improvements. This problem has been well known for years and still no upgraded part?

The issue with these cables are more well known to the customers than the repair facilities which is a general lack of product knowledge and updates on issues that should have been sent to the service department staff. Something needs to be done it seems to address continual education on product and procedures. It was extremely obvious to me that a steel cable used in such manner would corrode quite quickly and create a service problem. BRP should be well versed in anti corrosion properties needed for critical components considering their vast array of products. This repair should have been a recall.

I am quite critical from my working experience in the automotive field where all of these issues were dealt with quickly and we had satisfaction surveys to inform the manufacturer of how well we were doing in the customers opinion. We were actually held accountable and rewarded if we performed excellent on these reports. Motorcycles, boats, personal water craft and snowmobiles are expensive purchases and the manufacturer could not care less about their buyers. This is some I have to accept.

I just has both saddlebag cables replaced. I can't believe how easy they open now. Way better than when it was new. Tom :spyder:

Was that on your dime, or backed by BEST extended warranty?

I've been babying & fighting my cable releases since day 1 that I bought it! I do have the BEST warranty until 7-20-2025.

Aftermarket warranty. Saved me $500. Fourth time I have used the warranty, two more years left. Tom :spyder:

For what these dealers charge their service department managers desks should be piled high with new technician applications. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

I was told that the BRP extended warranty did not work for things such as the cables or handles. It is covered under the original 2 year warranty, but not the extended one. To me, that is total BS that you purchase a warranty and it covers less than the original. That is totally different from the extended warranty purchased on my BMW K1600B. It covered "every item" that was covered under the original 3 year warranty. And if the bike was sold, you could either transfer it for $50 or cancel it and get part of your money back.

Can you provide the name of the aftermarket warranty. its length and cost? Is it only good at the dealer who sold it to you?
Thanks.

I too would like the name of the aftermarket warranty, the cost, and the duration.

Thanks, johnv

Seminole Powersports, Sanford FL.. It's an "RPM" warranty, 7 years 0 deductible, $2100. Good anywhere. Tom :spyder:
