2020 RTL Will Not Start - what to check? Fuses?

Starter spins over fine. Will Not fire. Kill switch is in run position. Battery registers 12.8 volts. Half tank of fuel. 17,500 miles on odometer. Just made a 200 mile run yesterday with no problems. What to check? Fuses?:banghead:

Starter spins T.W.O(Throttle Wide Open)? Foot on Brake don’t try too long & burn up-starter. Good 20min cool down time between tries, unless maybe have a fan available

Do you hear the fuel pump pressurize the fuel rail for two seconds after Ignition On?

Also loosen and tighten the fuel tank cap.

Wasn't there some type of recall for carbon build up under the valves in the engine that required a ECM reflash???

How well do you know your bike? Have you done anything to it recently? Please provide more context.

Do you normally use the Kill Switch to Shut Down? If so, try repeatedly cycling the Kill Switch for a bit ; maybe even give it a good spray with contact cleaner &/or open the RH Control module to check it out & clean/spray it - there's been more than one Kill Switch failure on these things, often & widespread enough that many of us now don't use them at all (they're pretty much an out-dated anachronism left over from the past anyway! ) :dontknow:

Good Luck!

definition of motorcycle kill switch... a device that will strand you 190 miles from the nearest help.... ask me how i know.

I never use the kill switch, occasionally the wife will flip it when getting on as a passenger, when the kill switch is used the starter does NOT spin, "at least on my machine". The starter turns the engine over just fine, just will not fire! At the present time I have left the bike at our other location, "the lake". Will check to listen for the fuel pump when I go to retrieve the bike. Will the starter turn over if the chipped key is the problem? Is there a fuel pump fuse? Just drawing straws!

Yeah, I thought the Kill Switch was clutching at straws, but there have been a few reported here that've done really odd things! :banghead:

You should get a 'Bad Key' msg on the dash if it's the key, but I don't think the starter will turn over with that issue either?!? I do believe there is a fuse for the fuel pump, but am nowhere near any Spyder atm to confirm/give you any more details... hopefully someone else will be able to do so?! :dontknow:

Listening for fuel pump noise should help anyway; but another thoughty that may or may not help - might be just another wild goose chase.... :p . I had one vehicle with a relay that'd had failed, so when the ignition turned from on to start, everything else would work fine, but it just wasn't getting the pulse thru to set off the injectors as/when required, resulting in no firing! . Eventually found that one by pulling, inspecting, & re-seating every relay, then gently touching each relay in turn that should go off as the starter spun - & found one that didn't.... Replaced it, & everything ran beautifully after that! :ohyea:

You do know that it's gonna be the last thing you'll think of checking that sorts it, don't you?!?

Good Luck!

Sounds like the carbon buildup problem like I had. Turns over very freely? ECM update needed. Carbon removal needed by the dealer. Good luck!

Starter spins T.W.O(Throttle Wide Open)? Foot on Brake don’t try too long & burn up-starter. Good 20min cool down time between tries, unless maybe have a fan available
What do I hope to gain by trying this? T.W.O. The engine is EFI, I don't believe it would start doing this procedure even if I had No Problems.

No it will not start the spider if the plugs are fouled. Take it in for warranty and update the ecm.
Warranty will cover the tow.

Bert, Yes the fuel pump runs when I turn on the key, I opened the fuel cap and put my ear down to listen.
Called the dealer, they told me there is no recall for ECM that they were aware of. Got it loaded and heading to my dealer in the morning. They told me it would be two weeks before they will look into the problem.:barf: But they want it there just in case they get a chance. "Go Figure" Guess I will see how good my BEST warranty is. Meanwhile::dontknow::gaah::banghead:

Knizar -- you don't have enough miles for the various forms of gradual performance loss to occur. And besides you said it was running great the day before. So that points to an abrupt failure like Peter described. Best case: sensor or actuator failed. Worst case: something in the timing mechanism slipped a cog. Most likely Best case although the absence of a fault code is concerning. The 1330s are a tough engine.

Best wishes.

It's fly by wire. Throttle position determines what information is fed to the computer. Try it and let us know

Pete, "Your a very wise man", Tech at the dealer did exactly what you suggested. (T.W.O.). She runs perfect again. Never to old to learn, my apology for doubting your expertise.

Well, you hit the nail on the head! That's exactly what the service tech told me he did to get it running , "Hats off to you"!

Mine works very, very well .... even at freeway speeds when bumped while adjusting cruse control and eyes are on 4 lanes of traffic. Yep! Also good for heart exercise. I'm not going to ask if there is a plan to move it or redesign the switch block.

What was the Fix?

:coffee:...What was the Fix?
Did a part go bad or something?
Just wanted to know if something like this happened again, what would you do?

Stay Healthy. ....
