2020 RT Limited - rpm/whining noise issue. Anyone else?

I just spoke to my dealer and they're ordering a new sprocket for my 2021 RT. It was built in late 2020 so they apparently put the 2020 pulley on it. They're going to order the new pulley as well as a belt tensioner (if it doesn't already have one).

I see this is an older thread but the whine/noise I'm getting from my 2020 RTL is specifically between 49 and 51 MPH. Not RPM or gear related. It is so ear piercing at that speed that I have to wear ear plugs. If I slow down or speed up out of that range, it goes away...

My 2020 RTL is currently in the shop for first oil change/inspection. I told them about the noise at 45-50 mph. Of course they were not aware of the issue. They called BRP and got permission to replace the front sprocket under warranty. 4 weeks later the sprocket is finally in. I am also waiting on a new dash due to the original having delaminated (appears to have water spots behind the glass).
I'll post an update as soon as the new sprocket is installed.

OK... I have an early 2021 RT Limited, with the OLD front sprocket... After all the talk about this, I ordered the NEW sprocket (late 2021), hoping the sound whirring & whistling at around 45-50 would stop. The news and result? The sound is still there, only now it's there up to about 54mph! So as my last option, I am fitting a belt tensioner/idler pulley. Yes, that sound is deafening!

Rick.

My November 2020 F3L made a number of different noises for the first 10k km, most of which slowly disappeared. Now with 22k km on the clock there are no strange noises and it appears to run better and better each time it gets to punt me through the twisties. Loving it.

It's amazing how people will get something new and pick up on little things about it, only instead of just relaxing and using it and getting used to it, they have to change it! I guess that's human nature!! And good for the companies that are supplying and making the add-ons, of course! Ride more, worry less!!

Go back and read my post # 77

Our 2020 RT-L has 2 separate whine noises. There's a pulsing type of noise between 78 - 82 Kmh, 48 - 51 mph, which by this Forum is a drive pulley/belt noise. That one I can live with, as it acts as an 'audio' speedometer - if I hear it, then I'm doing the posted 80 Km. speed limit.
The other noise is a short, rising note, much like accelerating over only one section of a rumble strip. It happens ONLY in 2nd gear, under light to medium throttle, and happens between 2400 and 2600 rpm. I'm wondering if it something to do with the clutches engaging?
It's booked for it's first service at 5000 Km., 3100 mi. next week, and I'm going to bring it to the Dealers attention. Also, as per the replies here, it will be interesting to see if anything changes after the oil and filter change.

Update; 1st service done. I don't know if they adjusted the belt, but I think the 'pulsing' noise is now louder, and hearing it at higher speeds too. The Tech. said " All the newer Spyders have that whine" , that doesn't mean that they SHOULD ! I asked about the pulley upgrade, but they could find no information on the computer. I see a number for a new pulley several posts back, so I'll forward that to the Dealer as well.
As for the little 'grunt' noise in 2nd gear, between 2400 and 2600 rpm, they tried to tell me that it's an engine noise because I'm shifting at too low an rpm. Well, when riding alone I'm in Eco mode, and I never max out my shift points on any of my equipment, so I don't believe that story either. At least both issues are logged into my file, for future reference.

Tell the dealer it is in a TSB, better yet take this to them,

Hi Mélanie,
Eric_Fauteux (BRP Technical Hub - Global) posted a new article in Can-Am On-Road Product Specialist blog on 11-09-2020 11:26 AM:
September Product Updates

Hey guys,
The On-Road season is going very well even if the COVID-19 situation delayed the start off a little. Here is some good information that you may want to be aware of the 3WV family.

MY20 RT Noise reduction Improved Sprocket
My last blog was about a complaint that I'm sure you may receive complaints from RT owners. We are talking about that noise at 70-80km/h (45-50 mph) when cruising.
I've mentioned that our NVH team was working on a new sprocket and I shared the part number. The bad news is that the first batch received from the supplier doesn't meet the engineering requirements. There is still some work to do on it and the goal is to have this new sprocket for the next production planned next January. No worries, they will also be available as for the service part.
Now the good news, I've contacted some dealers that installed the OLD RT belt idler 219800419 and they all confirmed that they get 80% noise reduction which is very acceptable at the customer level. I'd consider that as a temporary solution until we have the new sprocket available. Of course, this will be covered under warranty if it is needed to satisfy a customer irritated. One thing to pay attention to is to
make sure that the idler wheel is perfectly aligned with the belt. As some of you remember, the 2020 RTs were supposed to have a belt idler but it was decided to last minute remove it due to idler bearing reliability. The actual bearing may overheat if there is too much axial play due to bad alignment, keep that in mind.

RT-F3 Loose Mirrors
I lately updated an old TST about mirror vibration on F3 and RT. We do have now a new ball-stud available with revised tolerances and finish. This new ball-stud can be identified with a hole at the as shown below.

Belt Saver on Ryker
The belt saver function is used to prevent the belt from slipping too long under certain conditions and getting damaged.
When the function detects the conditions, the engine torque is modulated to **bleep** the vehicle for the driver to take action.
The worst conditions are quite good when the vehicle starts (worse on hills) and when the vehicle is leaned against something, like a block of cement.
Above a certain speed (5km/h/ 3mph), the function is deactivated, even if you release the accelerator.
@Marc-Antoine did a good video showing the condition.
(view in My Videos)
Scotch Grip.... again
I know this will probably get the attention of my good friend @RPM_Matt with that %$#@!!! ScotchGrip ... Last week we got an interesting case with an idling issue that I wanted to share what we found. @RobZastrow and @joshf from CC POWERSPORTS KY did a pretty good job on that one. The unit was shutting down randomly with no fault codes on a low miles MY20 RT. After some investigation, they found an excessive amount of scotch grip on the main ground wire. Simply clean out the %$#@!!! ScotchGrip and all good after that.
Cheers!

Bluewater; If you'll pm me your email I will send you a PDF of what I posted that has the BRP logo's and all on it straight from them.

Anyone else wanting it do the same.

I don't see a way to post a pdf on here.

Click on Reply to Thread; then Go Advanced; scroll down past the text box to Additional Options; the first block is Miscellaneous Options, the second block there, the one you want, is Attachments. Click on the Manage Attachments button - & note all the Valid File extns that include pdf. ;) That'll bring up a new screen that lets you Upload Files from your Computer or other devices, the top section; or Upload Files from a Website, the bottom section. In either case, select your desired file (note the max size for pdf's shown further down the screen is 117.2 kb) then click Upload (bottom right of the applicable box) - that'll probably take a moment to do its thing but when it's all done the file name & addr/extn etc will be displayed in the field below the from website box & above the attachment key box. Repeat as necessary (but you probably shouldn't put more than 5 on any one post if you want everyone to be able to see them all on their own devices - any more won't display on some devices :sour: ) then once you've got your file/s uploaded, you can Close this Window to get back to the Reply to Thread window & you'll see your pdf file included in the Manage attachments box - you can even Preview Post if you want! They'll be displayed as thumbnails in the Submitted P o st, but clicking on the thumbnail will enlarge it to the uploaded size, and most will be able to zoom in even further if they need/want/wish! :ohyea:

Doing all this ^^ might look & sound difficult, but it's actually much harder to explain & type up than it is to do, at least for most; regardless, drop me a PM if you have any issues!

Me too !! New front drive sprocket installed yesterday, noise is mostly gone. A tiny bit of it between 76 and 78 k.p.h., but it disappears quickly. Under Warranty as well.
That noise was a " burr under my saddle ", so glad BRP solved it, and that I used the info. I found on this Forum when I contacted my Dealer. Helped them track it down.
One thing tho, the part number on my W.O. is 705503239 , which is different from the one previously posted. Now a Happy Camper.

I recently bought a 2020 RT Limited on March 4th and after about 200 miles, 300 on it now. In 4th 5th and 6th gear I'm getting an excessive whining noise at certain RPM's and it's really loud.
Took it back to the dealer and they took it for a ride, the tech came back and confirmed the issue. He thought it may be transmission noise and not the belt. So I left it with them to investigate. Today they called and said they adjusted the belt several different ways with no change with the whining still there. They called BRP and BRP said they have not had any dealers call on this issue yet.
They have sold 3 2020's and no one has gotten back with this issue. The tech took another one out and came back with the same noise, so the service manager took both out and came back surprised it was so loud. I have known the service manager for over 30 years and he is a friend and a straight shooter and will deal with this. The tech put a post on the dealer only forum asking if any other tech's are having this issue.
With that said they want me to put about 3k miles on it and we'll do an oil change and see what's what. I'm patient and being a mechanic for along time I'll play the game for a bit. I do allot of riding not being a weekend rider only so I'll get the 3k miles on soon, hope I don't get stranded on the back mountain roads with no cell service, I guess I can send smoke signals
Any one else dealing with this?
Paul

My 2020 RTL did this. Drove me crazy at 45MPH. After I took off the rear wheel and got a new tire put on. Reinstalled and It stopped. Never notice again. I did not change the belt or tension.
