• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 2014 RT-S SE6 not always starting

cohoff

GOS member (Girls On Spyders)
I have had my 2014 RT-S SE6 for a year, 16,000 miles and during the past 10 days I have not been able to start my Spyder on at least 12 occasions. It is in neutral, parking brake is on, I have my foot on the brake, my kill switch is not on. It will go through the initial start up process and when I try to start it I will either get a large orange key in the cluster or a small orange key where the odometer is and the Spyder will not start. I have used the spare key in case there was a problem with the original key and I still got the orange key on two occasions. I remove the key and walk away from the Spyder and after about 3-5 times of doing this, I can finally get it to start. I dropped my Spyder at my dealer yesterday for a new rear tire and a couple other items and told them about it not always starting and getting the orange key symbol. The service manager said that unless it shows a number code or had an orange key show up while they tried it, they could not figure out why this is happening. It does not show a number code.

Any one else have this happen? Do you know what causes this problem? What is the fix?

I know there was a bulletin about ignition problems on the 2014s. Does anyone have a link to that please? I remember seeing it once and checking my number on the tag with my spare key and my number didn't fall into that category. But I just want to double check.

Thank you

Your having DESS errors. Many of these reports have been cropping up lately. Actually A LOT of people have been reporting this issue lately. Some have had the issue go away and others have not. Some that had it go away it cropped up again later. Others had to have it towed to the dealer as the error would not clear.

There was a Service Bulletin directed at 2014 models about having the key switch replaced under warranty. Might be time to go see the dealer about it before the problem gets worse.

You said it did not show a number code? Did you push the mode, set and turn signal cancel buttons at the same time? It won't show a code on the screen unless you push the buttons in that sequence.

Your dealer should be able to put your VIN in their BOSS system and see if you may have the bad DESS. They don't sound very helpful.

I did not push the buttons. If my dealer can't figure it out while they have my Spyder I will try this the next time it doesn't start.

Thanx Bob, it is at my dealer now. I'm waiting to see if they can find the cause.

YOUR ISSUE

Thanx Bob, it is at my dealer now. I'm waiting to see if they can find the cause.

I had a different problem but the Dealer gave me the same BS story...........Then at Spyderfest a BRP Tech ( Danny ) looked at it and told me I had about 246 codes stored in the computer for over a one year period.................So my dealer was BS'ing me that they couldn't find it......BECAUSE they never looked very hard I guess.....................It's in the computer and BUDS can find it ......don't let them BS you.....................Mike

dess module

Hey cohoff
Had same issue and took my 14 rts to dealer. They replaced the module which is covered under warranty. You need to take it asap to get it covered by warranty. Good luck

Thank you all for your replies and info steering me in the right direction. And thank you blueknight911 ! I am calling my dealer right now as they still have my Spyder.

I wanted to give a follow-up report. Just talked to my dealer and they opened a case with BRP about a defective DESS module. BRP approved it. My dealer is ordering a new DESS module for my Spyder and it will all be covered under warranty. Several of you were spot on about the problem and resolution. Thank you all for your help and replies.

my spyder gave me the orange key again this morning. I am even afraid to turn the spyder off to put on gas. What is the solution people are coming up with? thank you

Take it to your dealer and have them open a case with BRP for a defective DESS module. They will replace it under warranty. That will eliminate you getting the 'orange key'.
