2013 recall report after long ride 100deg ambient.

Today I got to take a 60 mi. loop around in 100 deg ambient temps with my 2013 RT and take temp measurements. Overall I have to say it MAY be a success I will qualify at the end. Temps while cruising ,Glove box =cool, seat front=cool, side panels =cool I have the 2014 right grill installed and no heat on my foot. Seat up at end of ride with a few minutes of idling while I got my camera and temp gun out of the trunk. Gas cap=warm but not hot, spine =warm but not hot, seat latch was the worst area I did not reapply the DEI tape they destroyed before the recall around the latch it was a bit hot. I have reapplied the tape now and expect it will be better.

I also did some hand testing of airflow. Hand at the front side edge of both sidesof the seat there was air flow felt on my legs and crotch. Hand back where 2nd rider would be plenty of air flow. Maybe the design of the scoops got lucky and allowed some airflow above them and did not prevent airflow to passenger.

Engine temps were same as ever 5 bars and steady. Here are some temp measurements

I believe the latch area being open skewed this reading

Both sides were similar here Remember it was just idling for a few minutes after the ride these were the only 2 "hot" reading I got

Over all I have to say I am satisfied with what has been done. The qualifier I mentioned was the recent 2013 fire thread. He had the 1st recall done and was about to take it in for the second and what I believe was a brake MC leak caused a fire. That re inspection of the MC should have been included in the recall and I suggest everyone tell their dealers to inspect it and replace the insulation if any issues are found. I am hoping I can now enjoy my ride but I still have a nagging feeling about the MC. I may end up pulling the panel and have a look see. I hope this report helps 100deg ambient the whole time I was sweating the seat was hot ( it IS black ) but the bike seem to keep it's cool. Keep the rubber side down :ohyea:

This is great news, we got ours back today and drove 50 miles in 90deg heat with very high humidity, all around front of seat - glove box- and side panels stayed cool to the touch, when we got home let idle then checked in glove box and gas cap and frame backbone , barely warm. Very pleased with the new Trike!!!!!!! Thank you BRP for your efforts finally.

Hi Magdave
Firstly great report and thanks for that.
Mate could you explain what is and how in a little more detail your about your comment " seat latch was the worst area I did not reapply the DEI tape they destroyed before the recall around the latch it was a bit hot. I have reapplied the tape"
In antisipation of a response many thanks - Kenn

I used DEI 1500 deg heat tape to cover my gas tank and the open area around the seat latch. The intent was to stop heat from rising out of the hole in front of the latch and it did. I did not look but during the recall they tore up my insulation ( heat tape) around the latch. Probably because they had to detach the cable during the recall. I re applied it after the temp measurements. It was hot to the touch in that area after the ride so I expect it all to be good now. I will post a pic later.

It's good to hear that you are "mostly" encouraged about the results. I hope that, as you ride more this summer, that experience will cause your remaining reservations to fade. (I know that you realize that riding in SC in the summer, you will always experience at least some heat.)

I'm kind of glad I have waited to get mine done. The fact that they destroyed the heat reflective tape you had previously applied was discouraging and something that I will have to make sure does NOT happen when I take mine in. I have a LOT of reflective tape under there that I definitely want kept in place. Between your report and a few other things I've read, I've started making notes to take with me when I take my bike in.

I plan on getting mine done in mid July after I get back from a scheduled vacation in Tennessee.

Question: Will you let us know, when you become happy with the fix in an un-qualified manner? :D

Good Luck!
That will be when the report on the recent 2013 RT fire comes in and BRP adds the requirement to re inspect the brake MC during the recall. Obviously the first recall was a disaster waiting to happen...again. How are we to know ,since it is obvious it did not work on at least one bike, that our MC's are not damaged from the first recall. Now I have a question for you Bob . When are you going to quit being a BRP fanboy defender anytime I point out the obvious failings they made to us 2013 owners?

I like my bike... I liked my old bike too!
It wasn't perfect; it just lit the fires!

I'm sorry that you're so unhappy! :D
If you don't like the company; sell your bike, and get something else... that's a viable alternate course of action, and nobody wants to see you suffer... nojoke

Whatever Bob I like mine too but I simply do not want to catch on fire. Go out and hug your bike.

So as promised here is a picture of the heat tape re applied you can look at the latch picture above to see the difference. It is a hot blow hole. Not now. As I said above I know why they did it taking the latch cable off was part of the recall I have it memorized. I am sure they did not have any Tape to fix it with. One other item of dismay was my cig lighter plug in my instrument bezel wires were not plugged in after the recall. I took the bezel off, almost lost those darn stainless screws and had to pull some wire up and fix it my self after my GPS went dead during the ride. Pure laziness I will be addressing at the dealership Monday along with the scratch seen below. I suppose I am to be grateful for the lack of service on this too right?

Seriously Rob fully dressed in my First Gear mesh suit w/boots and helmet it was actually a very comfortable ride. I had added the little lip to my 2014 rt grille with some pop rivets so all the heat was away from my foot. I mentioned leaving a little on the left bottom on a previous post you read concerning my right grille and it worked great:thumbup:

When I was at a BRP demo ride last week, they had some 2015 RT's there. (In fact I rode one of those plus an F3 on two different demo rides.) I took time to give that right side grill and the attached lower plate a good look. I can see how you can alter that bottom cover to get the hot air flowing down. If I'm still bothered by the right foot heat AFTER I get the recall work done, I am definitely looking into that. Thanks again.

Good report and temp database. Do you have your headers wrapped and a cat bypass installed? These two mods along with the heat reflective insulation and the recall have done wonders for my wife's RTS. I do not think anything will alleviate all the heat when sitting still. I wish someone would come up with an underbody fan to draw the heat out while sitting at stop light or slow heavy traffic.

So they have added new side scoops like the 13 st? How do they look? Glad to hear they have got the temps down on the 13 rt!!

Nope on both. I may consider the cat bypass in the future though. As I said as long as the MC isn't already melted or still is too close to the header there is considerable improvement without them but I bet yours IS even better. I am glad I did not take 501 into Myrtle Beach as my route what should take 20 min was 1 1/2 hrs today. It was a 10 mile long parking lot I saw it as I was going in the opposite direction. A fan that turns on with the radiator fan would be a good thing in traffic like that. Being a local I know better than taking that route on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. There are better ways to get to the beach than a straight line.
