2011 to 2013 upgrade ?

Hi folks,

I have a 2011 RT-S purchased new in 2012, the 2013 model isn't available over here for another month or two, but i wanted some advice on if there are many changes between the model years and if it would make sense to trade in for a new 2013 model. I haven't had any reliability issues with mine so far, but would be helpful to know what the main updates are between the model years.

Thanks in advance

Al.

They've refined them greatly for 2013. A new frame, relocated battery (up front), Brembo brakes, 15" wheels, new front suspension... They are definitely worth a look! :2thumbs:

AJKOK1 2011 to 2013 upgrade ?

Someone one on the UKSPYDERWEB.COM Website Was considering upgrading from a 2010 Model (Same year as mine) to 2013 RT
He lives in Jersey - Channel Island where there is only 1 Can-Am dealer the PX offered by this dealer was about less than half its purchase price
The dealer did offer a slight discount against a new model if no PX - Part Exchange was involved

I posted the following response :-

(Name of Owner)

Why the change anyway ?

Mileage - Some Spyders RT'S 2010 Models have covered well over
30,000 miles

Handling - If you upgrade the Suspension e.g ELKAS and the new
BAJARON RT Swaybar everyone is raving about in the States
Yours will handle as good as a 2013 Model

Colour - If you want a new colour Just get the panels removed and any good Automotive/Motorcycle paint sprayer
will no doubt give you an excellent job and you get to design the colour scheme yourself

Brakes - IF you want to upgrade the Brakes use EBC Pads and disks etc

Footboards, Backrests etc - Very good aftermarket supplies already out there for existing Spyder Models

All of the above could be done over a period of time dependant on
cost etc

If you still want to go with a 2013 Model Just compare what a new model will give you against your existing one

If its to be a 2013 Model because it's want you want - I can understand that as well

Either way Good luck and let us know

You can even fit the new Fenders (at a price) to existing Spyder Models

Nothing on the New 2013 Model is a major change for me to changer over - Now a bigger engine may well sway me in a few years time
but I would wait until any issues with the new model are dealt with

This is just my personal opinion and accept we all have our own reasons for the decisions we make

The cost to repaint a Spyder RT can be quite high. I went with a friend yesterday to get an estimate on painting his and from there we went to look at the new models because the difference in price between a new paint job and a new Spyder wasn't that much.

I have 53,000 miles on my 2010 RTS and with the BajaRon sway bar and 2011 RT shocks I love the way it handles. I'm ready to put another 50,000 miles on it!

But that said if you can afford it and a 2013 is what you want then go for it.

It Doesn,t Make financial sense because they will low ball you on the trade-in and you will Pay Near Retail on the New Model because of the suspension. My 2012 RT (2,500 Miles) Corners much faster than the Law allows with the Elka shocks and when I get the sway bar I will be set for at least 50,000 Miles!!

As was mentioned above it just does not pay to upgrade from a perfectly good no issues 2011 to a first model year 2013. The major improvements in the 2013 were to rideabilty in the suspension. If you are not a cafe racer type of rider it would not be noticable as compared to a 2011 with Elkas Shocks. Adding the Baja Ron sway bar would be an added benifit. Even with the cost of the shocks and sway bar you would be way better off cost wise than the bath financial bath that you are contemplating. With the major discounting of the new left over 2012 RT's I would imagine a used, while perfectly fine vehicle, 2011 RT would be very deeply discounted. On the other hand the 2013's are new on the market and in high demand. What ever you deciede good luck and be safe.

Lots of takes on the subject and I don't disagree with any.

I have went through most of the issues mentioned and heres where my .02 is.

Trade up: You usually end up taking a bath on a trade in. Even more so if you have a highly farkeled :spyder2:. I did it when I went from 2008 GS to the new 2010 RTS two years later. I had to have that 2010--but it cost me a lot of money to have newest and best.

I just recently purchased a new 2011 RT A&C in 2012. Saved a bit of money on the year old "new" and traded in my final two wheeler--which was not highly farkeled. Not as bad a deal for me. I did not feel that there was that much difference between the 2011 and 2012. The 2013 does have improvements in handling which we will be hearing about as they are now hitting the streets and riding season is not to far off. They do cost more, but the new colors are nice also. For me--I don't have to have a 2013 because the 2011 is fine.

I like the new Circuit Yellow so much that I am going to have some panels on my 2010 done in a shade of yellow close to that. Quote was $1800 to paint the full bike, I have decided on 8 pieces to be painted and am waiting for a revised quote on that. The paint job will result in a two tone :spyder2: that should not look to bad.

Thanks for all the feedback. It does seem that fundamentally the main changes for the 2013 could be "achieved" by updating my shocks and sway bar. I do take on board the comments about the pricing and deals likely with the new 2013 model, so i probably shouldn't be surprised if the cost to change is a fair bit more than i expect ( especially in the early days after the 2013 launch).

Just as a reference, here in the UK, the RT-S retail price is approx £23k ($37k US). That's quite a premium to cover the cost of shipping :( so depreciation on them is equally expensive.

For $37k you could buy an airline ticket to the US, Buy a leftover new 2012 RT-S and ride for a week then ship the bike home to England as a used bike and still come out ahead! Folks in the US used to do this all of the time with VW's and BMW's.

Not really. U need to have vehicle register 5 months under your name in USA, if U want bring it over the europe and dont pay taxes. which are about 30% of the vehicle price.
So one week, would not work. But Im surprise with the price. U can buy one in Slovakia for pretty much same amount like in US. We are in Europe union, so no taxes this way. 37G, damn thats a lot.

Here's a deal for you. You come over and buy the bike and register it here. Leave it with me where I will gently exercize it daily and in 5 months I'll ride it to the port and you can ship it over and enjoy.
