So I have an issue with the lights of my 622. For some reason I dont have any running lights. I have brake, and turn signals but just not any running lights. I havent started tracing wires yet was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue and might have an idea where to start looking?

Howdy.

If it helps, my 2011 RT622 quit working, so I checked with the dealer. He discovered a recall for installing some sort of ground wire.

So...if you haven't done it, check for a recall.

Good Luck.

The grounding wire issue happens when you use a 14 trailer wiring harness on your Spyder and match it with an older trailer.

Im hoping this is a quick and easy fix. I was gonna hook it up to my truck and work backwards at all the points and check for voltage and continuity as I go. I have heard recently about folks having issues with the BRP converter or whatever they call it and was figuring that might be part of my issue?

That seems odd that every thing but the running would work...are you using the big round factory plug or is it converted? I rewired my entire 622 and now have red stop, yellow turn and even have white reverse lights. 8-).

I agree. I was looking for backup light but didnt see actual led's in there. It is the round plug that has a converter I guess that changes it to a flat 4 plug if that makes sense?

Just to be clear, the trailer you got has a 9 pin round connector on it with an adapter harness that converts to flat 4 pin, right? If so, are the brake lights and the turn signal lights both on the red brake lights, or do you have amber turn signal lights? If the latter, I think the converter harness is wired incorrectly. With a 4 wire flat connector you cannot use amber turn signals.

Can you include a photo of all the cables and connectors, both on the trailer and the hitch you have. That'll make it easier to figure out what you need to do.

Those are the plugs on trailer, the round and the 4 pin flat connecter that is plugged into the round connector.

The turn signals are red and are basically the ones that integrates into the rear taillights. If you need a pic of those I can post them up. But they are the same as the back tailights of the Spyder RT.

I dont have a hitch or the wiring yet. I had it plugged into my truck to test the lights. I was waiting on the Spyder wiring to see if I needed something special/different.

OK, good. Thanks. With the flat 4 you have ground, right tail/brake, left tail/brake, and running lights. Here's a diagram of the standard setup for 4 flat. What they show as the left and right turn are also brake.

When you're testing apply +12v to pin 2 and ground to 1. If you don't see running lights on in the tail/brake light unit then there is a broken wire, a corroded connection, or the 9 to 4 is miswired. If your car or pickup has a flat four connector then plug the trailer into it. You should see everything working correctly. With the flat four connector the amber turn signals will not work.

Depending on what you do for a bike side harness and isolator you can have either 4 wire or 5 wire. 5 wire will let you have amber turn signals but the 4 to 9 converter harness will have to be modified.

Ok, thanks. Is there a 5 pin converter for the trailer that I could replace where the 4 pin converter is now? Would like the side yellow and red marker lights to be turn signals as well.

Found my issue, one of the pins (running lights) was pushed in from the previous owner. Gonna try and take it to a trailer shop and see if they can reseat the pin. I tried with a pair of pliers but couldn't get it to work. Here a couple of pics with the problem.

I have been looking at the parts catalog, looking for the part number for this adapter just in case I cant get the pin reinstalled but cant seem to find the adapter. Does anyone by chance know what it is or a link to a page in a parts catalog?

Good trouble shooting! I've had problems a number of times with pins not staying seated, but mostly on connectors I put together myself. Look to see if there is a tab running lengthwise on the lower part of the pin. If so, take a tiny screwdriver or knife blade and pull it out. Then push the pin in and see if it stays. Most pins use a tab of some sort that springs out and catches a ledge to prevent the pin from backing out.

If you can't fix it that way then take it to a trailer shop.

What I would do is look closely and see which adapter wires connect to which trailer wires through the connector. Then cut the 9 pin connector off each harness and splice the wires together directly. You really don't need to have the 9 pin round connector in the wiring.

Thanks for the reply. My question is that I have ordered the show chrome hitch and 5 pin wiring harness from them, it there a way to get the side marker lights to be turn signals as well.

I have tried to reseat the pin, yes there is a lip on the pin that I cant seem to get through the cannon plug, keeps bunching up the wire. Im going to keep playing with it. If i cant get it I am going to tak it to the trailer shop saturday.

Based on you using the term Cannon Plug, almost sounds like you have some connector experience from aviation.

If the tang is protruding so the pin will latch, but the pin will not push in using the wire, you are correct and it may require an insertion tool to help.

What sometimes can work if you don't have the correct tool is a thin plastic tube, about the proper diameter and cut a lengthwise slit to slip over the wire. I also have insertions tools for large pin Amp and Molex style connectors where the insertion tool is similar to a screwdriver with a curved end on the tip.

All that said, if I did not have the plastic tube to fabricate an install tool, I would use a section of a plastic milk jug rolled a bit an see if it will insert the pin.

All the best with it.
Yep, 24 years as a UH-60 Blackhawk Crewchief, just retired 6 months ago. If i was back at work we have the little plastic pin tools, the job would be super easy. But since Im no where living close to my old job, makes it hard. And when I walk into the auto parts store and ask about cannon plugs and electrical pin removal/install tool, I get a deer in the headlight look.

I tried using a plastic straw that I had cut down. The lip was too thick and would still just bunch the wire up.

This is what i was looking for.
