• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. 2008 Later Edition RS SM5 will not start...

Spyder ran perfect since purchased in 09. We just returned from vacation andit started right up. I let the machine run for 30 seconds then turned off the machine. Parked for 3 days, Engine will crank over but will not fire up.
I have replaced the battery. Checked connections at posts all secure, checked all the electrical connections, pressed and checked fuses under seat and checked the relay switches to the fuel pump etc in the trunk. Replaced the fuel filter, air filter, new spark plugs and replaced the 8 gauge spark plug cables, and changed the oil and filter. Checked kill switch, pressed on emergency brake, pressed regular brake pedal, even put the spyder in neutral when cranking. Have tried open throttle wide and not at all. I have full tank of fuel, engine turns but will not start.
What to-do? Need TROUBLSHOOTING ideas and ANSWERS?

Do I check the fuel pump or can it be a computer glitch or put the machine on a trailer and haul it in to the dealer...cause out of ideas???

Man it looks like you have done everything possible ! I would have to think it has to be computer related and it needs to be hooked up to the BUDS. I think a trip to the dealer is in your near future . Great job trying to diagnose your problem.

Let us know how it turns out for you .

Are you getting spark at the plugs??
:dontknow: Usually when a engine won't start it's one of two things, No spark or No fuel.

You might try spraying a little starting fluid in the air intake while you are cranking it over...spray very little though..if it starts, then you know its not spark related..

Same thing happened to me. Spydee wouldn't turn over. All that would happen was a click. Nothing else. Contributed it to one of two things.

1. Drove Spydee in and out of the garage three or four times washing all the road crud off. Spark plugs fouled?

2. Got a little too aggressive with the hose. A wire got wet?

We trailered her to the Dealership and unloaded in the parking lot. While I was inside explaining Spydee wouldn't start and doing the paperwork for her 24k maintenance, heard her fire up and head back to the mech bay. :hun:

They never found out why she wouldn't start, because she did. Maybe something rattled back into place on the trailer ride?

Latest, someone at our ryde n meet today mentioned that, it could be a bad fuel injector solenoid ...Anybody ever hear of that before?

Latest....

Fooled around and rechecked everything...all connections...and tried one last time to start the engine...the spyder and coughed and fired up. I really think the fuel filter was clogged because after it started....Man...my Spyder started up at 7PM last night,,,after being down for a week, and is purrring like a TIGER being rubbed behind the ears. I also added STP Fuel Injector cleaner fluid into the gas tank today and added more life to the sound...the performance is awsome...no more back fire either....while slowing down from 4th gear to 3rd gear. The Can AM Dealership I bought my machine...highly recommended using the fuel injector cleaner. No I didnt need to mess with the FUel Injector solenoid or the O2 sensor...that was next. I did empty the gasoline and added premium fuel to it this morning just in case it was a combination of things.

In general fuel injected motors do not like to be started up cold and then shut down. Since there is no carb starting jet the computer runs a very rich mixture for the first few moments of the start. Once the motor warms up it then adjusts the mixture to the proper level of fuel and air. What might have happened here was that you flooded the motor. Since it is fuel injected the gas Had no where to go and each subsequent cold start just made it worse. Letting it sit until it got to the dealer help to get the gas out plus you were very lucky that it was able to pump out the bad mix and get going again. Again I would always let the bike run for about five min before shutting down on a cold start.

I use startron or whatever the stuff is called with every fill-up...I've noticed better performance and a bit better mileage...placebo? I think it's a bit more than that...

(sorry I'm still drinking my coffee and trying to wake up so my mind is a bit foggy but)

Is there something you can do for hard starting like hold the throttle down all the way during the start. Doesn't that engage like a choke feature or something?

okay back to my coffee :)

There is no starting enrichment feature that can be engaged by the user, unlike some motorcycles. Holding the throttle wide open (WOT) will allow cranking without ignition or fuel delivery, to clear the cylinders of raw fuel. For 2010 RTs having hot restart problems, cracking the throttle slightly when starting can help. Those are about the only tricks available.
