14,000 mile service

Do you think the 14,000 mile service is necessary.
From what I understand the cost is nearly $1,000. I have a 2012 RT SM5, bought new April 2012. Runs great, husband changes my oil ever 5,000 miles, use the BRP synthetic oil from the dealer. Had the updates installed in the spring.

Would I? NO! We had a 2008 SE5 that we ran 43k miles without any shop service except recalls and tire changes...no issues. We now have a 2010 SM5 with almost 40k miles and have cared for it the same way. I change the oil every 5000 miles, adjust the drive belt when the rear tire gets changed...no issues. I have used Royal Purple 10W40 Automotive Synthetic on both Spyders with NO issues on the transmission and no adjustments needed on the valves. I changed the spark plugs to iridium plugs, so can go 50k plus. I don't suggest anyone do this, just sharing what I do and my results.

Is this a dealer's quote or just from reading the forums? Each case is individual. I would get quotes from dealers and see what they offer in the price and go from there. Preventice maintenance goes a long way, provided that you do what is correct and worth it.

NO!! I have the same Exact Model bought in Oct 2012 with 6,000 when I hit 14,000 I will-
1-Change Oil as Usual
2-Change Air Filter
3-Replace Clutch fluid -I will probably extract and add fluid.
4-Change coolant -No Big Deal-Art Has a How To Video in DIY section.
5-Spark Plugs- The 2012 RT came with Iridium Plugs stock so I will wait till at least 20,000 miles.
6-Replace O rings ,Seals, wear sleeves rear axle when you replace rear tire.
7-Check/Replace brake fluid.
8-Lubricate front suspension- If not done at 9,300.

There are other Inspect Items on your Maintenance chart you should have been given.

I do this myself because I don,t trust dealers Now Adays to do everything, and I,m not payig them $1,000 to wonder which things they did and didn,t. Rather than trying to Double-Check ALL their work I do it myself!nojoke

Most know what I am going to say. :roflblack:

The issue costing the extra money ($600 or so plus) is the valve check adjustment. This is an item you must decide to make a call on.

I have owned 4 spyders. My first, the 2008 had the valve check done at the prescribed interval. I believe it was 12,000 miles. Cost me an extra $600. NO ADJUSTMENTS NECESSARY.

Did not perform any adjustments on the 2009 at 14,000. still running good.

RT-S 2010. Did not perform valve adjustment at 14,000. Did it at 28,000--last end of season. NO ADJUSTMENTS NECESSARY. Cost me an extra $600. I am going to let this one run another 30,000 and will not do the adjustment--unless my :ani29: starts to run funny. Other threads have talked about symptoms. At that point, 60,000 miles, I may be in the market for a different :ani29:.

SEE POST #8

On my 2011 RT--I am going to wait at least 42,000 miles and then see what happens--barring symptoms for checking the valves.

Another problem mentioned. Unscroupulous dealers may sometimes charge you for this service and not do anylthing. Unless you go into the shop and see your :ani29: torn up all over the place, how do you know. There are a few dealers like this--but hopefully--still few and far between.

This leads to a list of the things done at the 14,000 mile service. I had this done at my Georgia dealer for $627. If you are close to Mountain Motorsports in Kokak,TN it is owned by the same person. I would go there and save $400.

Should you have it done. MY answer is yes.

choices, choices..!!

you will get a great deal of opinions on to do or not to do. In the end it will be your choice or following who you trust the most. I listen to the valves with special tools or a long screw driver. If they seem extra noisy or there is a big difference between them will I go in. It's expensive because so much work has to be done. Now if you are not mechanical it is hard to decide for you can not do this yourself. You can have the shop do only what you ask for. If you forgo the valves things will be much more livable..but still a good idea to have them hook it up to the BUDS system to make sure all is functioning properly. That runs me about $35.00. Good luck with your decision then ryde on..!! :ohyea:

Valve clearance check.

Hi, I am a new owner of a Spyder Rt 2010. Bought the Spyder used last June with 57,000 km. I am due for my 60,000 km inspection. I have read lots of comments about , having the valves clearance check. Some positive and some negative comments, but every comment I read were unanimous about how time extensive it is, not to mention cost of the procedure. Would anyone know approx how long (hours) it take to do such a procedure. I am trying to evaluate if it is worth it or not. Thanks

The time is about 5 hours. It's your money, spend it wisely.

UPDATE: The 2011 now has 24,000 miles with no valve check. I am going to wait for 50,000 miles before thinking about it. The 2014 does not need valve checks--ever.
