2009 GS Exhaust installation question

Hey all,
This is my first post here so I'm not sure if this has been talked about yet or not, if it has if someone could direct me to the thread I would appreciate it.

Now on to my issue. I purchased the HMF exhaust/EFI controller and K&N filter upgrade for my 09 Spyder. I did the install myself and things seemingly went smooth, I should have known better. When I mounted my exhaust I removed the stock exhaust and mounted the HMF pipe in the same bracket I took the stock exhaust off of (I have included a pic as mine appears to be different from others I have seen after doing some research). After getting everything buttoned up I took it out for a little ride and when I got back home the inside of the pipe was all scratched and dinged up from hitting the brake when I go over bumps. This is when I started looking at pics and vids of others mounting the exhaust and I can see mine is in a mount that is too low. Now that I see where it's suppose to go I have been struggling to remove the nut/bolt from the correct mount as I can't seem to find anything to get on the nut on the inside of the mount....

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!

I have the same pipe on my 12' RS. The HMF pipe runs very tight to the rear wheel bolt/parking brake assembly. If your not mindful of that it will hit. Yours hangs a bit lower because you have passenger footpeg extensions but they all run close.
You will have to play with different washer/spacer configurations to get a bit more clearance and its likely going to be a tough fit due to the pipe hanging that much lower to start with. You may have to run a staggered size band clamp at the slip connection to allow you to run more spacing at the slip connection. We run them for better sealing but you could use them for added spacing too.
Mount everything up loose, get your clearance, and then have someone hold the pipe away from the frame as you tighten everything up. Good luck! Its going to be kinda tough!
Here are a few pics to point you in that direction.

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful info/pics!! I won't be working on it anymore till the weekend but I'll keep ya posted on how it goes.

Here's what I did..!!

though a different pipe same issue. When you have the peg extensions the exhaust mount was changed. You can space it out but found that to be a wobbly end result. I knotched the extension and added a tab to move the mount to the original location...

Looks nice!! I'm going to give a new spacer set up a shot first and hopefully it secures it ok.
My next question is what to use to cover the scratches with?? I know they are out of sight on the inside of the pipe but I still know they are there and it's going to drive me crazy:banghead:. I was thinking about getting some gloss black spray paint that is used for painting engine headers as that should be able to stand up to the heat on the pipe.... any thoughts??

Did you have a problem?

Did you have any problems getting your HMF exhaust to slip on? I just bought one for my 2009 GS and I'm noticing it won't just slip on.

We did 2 of them on 2 different bikes. One we battled with, it was such a perfect fit it didn't seem like it would work unless the sections were perfectly aligned. We did get it but it was tight!
The second one I used an inexpensive exhaust spreader on the pipe first just to "tweak" it ever so slightly and make it easier to install.

Try this..!!

Auto parts high temp exhaust/header paint. Comes in a spray and you can featherit in....

It is a very tight fit, I had to work at it for a couple minutes twisting and pushing it to get it to go on. You are definitely right that it doesn't just slip on!!

What size band clamp did you use? I added a 1 inch spacer over the weekend and it still isn't far enough out so I picked up a 2.5" inner/2.5" outer exhaust extender to move the pipe out before spacing it out further but it doesn't fit right... its just a fraction of an inch off on both sides. I don't have access to a welder so I am hoping to be able to use t clamps to secure it like the slip on uses.

Missing Spacer!

OP - It would appear that you are missing the cone shaped washer that keeps the pipe away from the wheel / swing-arm. Easy fix. Instructions that come with the pipe they are blurry and crap.

Sorry just saw this....
I don't remember the exact sizes but it was staggered or stepped if I remember correctly. I did have to notch the band in 2 places to clear the o2 bung and spring mount on the pipe. I'm thinking 2.5" then stepping from there. The pipe is metric so it doesn't translate perfect. The band ends up on the tight side but works good. It's been a few years so I'm fuzzy on the details....sorry....
