Alernate Gas Milage Thread

Since the guy with the 2012 seems hyper sensitive, I thought I'd post a "more open" milage thread.

In stock form, my 2010 RT never gave me over 25 mpg - then I modified it with a CAT delete, Yosh R77, new plugs & wires, non-ETOH gas only, and the milage went to the low to mid 30s (32-36).

I tracked the first 1800 miles on my 2014 RT (both SE), and averaged 30.28 mpg, with a low of 21.7, and a high of 37.05. Average price per gallon: $3.43/gal.

I'm not disappointed, but never see the kind of milage others do. I use normal - crummy (western gas is the worst of the worst) - pump gas in my 2014, am a big guy, with my BIG windshield way up, and have yet to do a really long trip on the new RT. Most of my riding is around town, or out on the twisties.

nice to know there are those with average mileages. Always a bit low when commuting close by in traffic and low speed winding highways. My RS (much lighter and more aerodynamic and more hp's) when I did track it, mostly to know my range and limitations was as low as 25 and as high as 40. Ryding hill country messes with the fuel guage readings so always good to back up with mileage. Yours will still get better with time...:thumbup:

Yes, good information for sure. Totally agree with your statement about "western gas."

My experience has averaged 31 mpg over 4 different :spyder2:'s, and 100,000 miles or so. My RS versions were heavily farkeled, with fairing, bags, trunk, etc. etc. so they were more like the weight of an RT when done. The new 2014 is the exception and I get 39 to 42 average per tank. 10K and counting.

My 2014 RT ( 1330 ) also got dis-appointing mpg's for the first 3000 miles but after that it loosened up and now I avg 39-40 and this is with REG w/ethyl. but I do use Star-tron which gives a slight octane boost ( allegedly :dontknow: ).......Mike :thumbup:

Western gas?
Ummm try gas from like Oklahoma that has a lot of methanol!
In my travels is a motorhome the WORST gas mileage I ever got was in states that had a high methanol content (like 30%)!

My 2011 RTS averages about 32 and this includes being stuck in rush hour traffic.

I find when on the highway staying at 72 MPH gets the best gas mileage (best I got was 37). Going above that with RPM's at 5500 or more, the gas mileage really drops! My low when doing 75-78 MPH dropped to 24 MPG.
I get the best gas mileage at about 5200-5300 RPM.

If you do some old post research here, you will see high RPM while cruising gives the lower gas mileage. This is why at one time some experimented with larger front sprockets to be able to go faster at lower RPMs.

It's the speeds that are being run, that may have the greatest affect on how much it hurts at the pump... :shocked:
The Spyder is about like a big old barn door getting pushed down the road... :banghead:
It takes a LOT more fuel, to push it at 75 or 80, than it does to push it a 60 or 65.
My 2010 got 33 mpg; but I ride just like the guy that you hate the MOST, to see in front of you! (65 mph at the most...)

I am also "one of those," but, I usually make it up to 68 - 70 occasionally.

Out here, it's 65 in the slow lane - 75+ in the others. That's why I prefer the winding back roads... where 55-60 is fast.

Here's my experience last year with gas mileage. Speed is the greatest factor. My best mileage was before the cat delete, no trailer, at about 60 mph the entire trip.

My 2010 RT got about 28 mpg.
My 2014 has been getting around 34 to 37 mpg. One caveat, I got it late lst year and only put about 2500 miles on it before the season ended.
Of course recently I've been getting infinite mileage.
0 miles traveled/0 gallons of gas burned..........

Yea, I usually get poorer than usual fuel economy also....but I GO....

At almost 2000 miles I can say I had one tank at 29 mpg but the cruise was set at 80 for the whole tank 2-up..I had a tank that got me about 34 mpg but that was all 2 lane roads 1 up......all expected performance ratings to me..I probably average around 30 on the slab and around 32 elsewhere...

But I had one odd tank that I was riding pretty hard and still got about 34 mpg......that was the only time I found non ethenol 91 octane gas and also the only time of hard riding I went over 200 miles on a tank with about a gallon left in reserve....

Will research it again when I find more non alcohol gas but am pretty confident there is a noticable increase in mileage with it...when I rolled over 200 miles I just was thinking. "i'll be darn, and I was riding hard", real gas rules!" Lol!!!!

Never checked the numbers per gallon, but last summer riding the eastern provinces of Canada we were getting at least 30 miles farther per tank in our 2012 RT. E0 gas rules!

Speeds over 65 will start to use gas more than usual. Same way as with our beloved cars.

Actually, as with my cages - the BEST milage is on the freeway, with cruise engaged. We can't help but modulate the fuel over bumps and irregularities w/o cruise.

I am getting consistently 40 mpg after the breaking and I now have just under 30000 miles on mine - I only run 89 octane mid grade since my tests on my 2010, 2012 and 2014 Spyders never showed me any value for spending more money..
Even with this mileage I still fill up at just over 200 miles range just to be safe

I had a short road trip this past weekend. 250 miles roundtrip, 1 up and got 29MPG on the Beast. That is doing 80 on the slabs, keeping up with traffic. But I didn't buy my Spyder for gas mileage, I got it for fun. And I love riding it every chance I get. 1 up or with my wife, we have a ball riding and that is the most important thing to us.
