Rear pulley Group buy? Which manufacturer?

On some of the other motorcycle and non-motorcycle related forums I visit I notice people getting together for a "group buy". I was wandering around the net looking for pulleys a couple weeks ago and there are a several manufacturers and shops out there. Didn't find anyone producing anything for the spyder. I emailed a few but never got a response. Just wondering if anyone knows a manufacturer or knows of one that we could possibly do a group purchase? They seemed to have run from $300.00 on up. I would like to see 1000 rpms knocked off the engine. What say you?:chat:

While you're at it find a manufacturer for a new belt as well.....I'm pretty sure there isn't enough adjustment range once you have on the new pulley. :lecturef_smilie:

Possibly a pulley and belt set, can't remember what the ratio is, something like 4 or 5 to 1, would like to see something in the mid 3 range. Less acceleration, but 3500-4000 @ 80mph should be good, have to check where the torque peak is.

If you could find a ratio where you make the front larger and the rear smaller, you could use the same belt. I am sure there would be a few people interested in a kit like that.

It does seem as though the sights I looked at did have belts, too. Ialso found a calculator for belt length on the net. As far a larger front pulley goes, there is no room if I remember correctly.

You're not going to fit a bigger one on the front for sure. Lowering the RPMs by 1,000 won't make the Rotax very happy - it likes higher RPMs - better just get used to it.

First gear is tall to begin with. A smaller rear sprocket would make launches, especially with a passenger, difficult and hell on the clutch.

Count me in on this much-needed option. I'd gladly trade a reduced 0-60 time for less frantic crusing and better gas mileage.

I use to sell a taller 4th and 5th gear for the Valkyrie for this very reason. I can tell you that most likely you'll never pay for a pulley and belt setup by better gas mileage. A stock belt is around $300.00 and you can bet that a custom belt will be more than that. By time you did a custom pulley and cushdrive you would be in the $1500-$2000 range.

The motor may run at fewer rpm's but this is a Sportbike motor that's meant to run at higher rpm's than a cruiser. Once you get that in your mind it doesn't seem like a big deal running at 6K+

I'm not trying to pay for the change with fuel savings, I'm trying to extend the cruising range with fuel savings. I currently get 31 MPG, so I'm limited to about 150-170 miles between gas stations.

Got it.:doorag:
I like to get off and stretch my legs around 140 miles so that's not a issue with me. I do get a little better mileage than you're getting too so that helps.

No interest in this option from me. I am happy with the stock gearing. :dontknow:

I would actually like a bigger rear pulley, and smaller front, to make first gear a little lower for city riding. Easier starts at the stop signs and lights.

I'm quite content with the way it is. The Rotax loves being above 4000 RPM, whereas my Road King loves to chug at low RPMs. Just a matter of getting used to it.

The torque curve on the Rotax doesn't really start before 5000 RPM, and peaks at 6000RPM. Although I'd like to see a little less rpm at highway cruising speeds, I think a smaller rear pulley would be troublesome in some off the line situations....Too bad we can't have reverse AND 6th gear-BRP, are you listening?

:agree:

I am always looking for that overdrive on the highway, but pretty happy with the pully raitio now.

We know that there is a gear sensor. I wonder if the computer is programmed for specific ratios? I don't know how drastically it would effect performance, but I'd hate to be the one to spend all the money and test just to find out that the computer didn't react well to the changes in ratio. I'm pretty content with the setup as is. I agree with those that have pointed out that the motor is designed to consistently run high RPMs.

I mentioned in other threads I don't think this mod is for everyone. I am a solo rider without luggage or trailer hitch. A stock SV has the same HP I have now on the spyder and runs fine within the RPMs I am suggesting. With luggage and passenger it would weigh as much as the spyder with a solo rider and there was still room to shrink the sprocket on the SV. Everyone else go probably get away with a 500 RPM decrease on there spyder.
