Exhaust Gasket Cross Reference

Has anyone ever tried to cross reference any of the exhaust gaskets on the Spyder, especially the one who usually fries out at 6000 miles to automotive or other motorcycle gaskets?

I've tried a couple of Yamas with no success. Someone, don't remember who now, found a Kawa gasket that fit but could not provide a part number. I haven't heard anything since then... maybe about three months ago.

The upper ones measure out at about 1.710" ID and I.910" OD. I actually tried a 1.75" ID from a Yama and there was too much slop in it.

The lower one measures 2.625" ID and 2.875" OD.

Thanks, bjt. A case of the CRS, I guess.

Funny how some things stick in your head and others, no matter how important, can slip away. I don't know why I remember this. :dontknow: I really don't have a very good memory and I can often forget what I was saying as I'm saying it. :opps: :D

I read a post about that also, but can't remember either. Was new to Spydering so had no idea about much about the Spyder. I am thinking of ordering one just to have if/when mine goes out. No problem at 7300 miles but I probably ride a lot less aggressive than most, if that makes a difference. I have a lot of time, so I will try and see if a good auto supplier or motorcycle parts department can match it. May be a time spent without rewards, but it will be interesting.

FWIW... I do believe the original gaskets were re-spec'd / with a newly manufactured batch, mid-to-late last year....similar to the Gear Position Sensor.

Maybe the newer ones last a tad longer.

The Yamaha gaskets I had/tried were considerably different in construction. The base screen mesh was much thicker (more robust) than BRP's... both are then injected/covered with a sealing agent that seals as it heats up.

If you have a Kawasaki shop close, with inventory, that would be a good first stop.

Exhaust gaskets

You might consider a little high temp silicone on the factory gasket to help protect it until a better gasket is found. I have a lead on a large one that is exactly like the honda upper gasket. It is made the same way just larger diameter. I'm having trouble touching base with the correct supplier rep. Hopefully after this holiday I can catch up with him.

We, Spyder riders, may be able to order them individually... if we can't and there is enough demand I'll order the minimum bulk quantity and re-distribute them.

I try hard but sometimes I do not succeed. This particular exhaust gasket is a tough one to find. /Ken

Honda Gold Wing Gaskets , There are a few posts about them.

GL1800 gaskets

I have been testing the honda gaskets on three machines for quite a while now. They are holding up well. Part of the solution to this particular problem is proper band clamp torque. The band clamps heat and cool many times so they must be torqued several times after re-installation so they have the correct amount of tight.

Upper clamps torque 159 inch pounds.
Lower clamp torque 24 foot pounds.

I have re-tightened the clamps on one of our units several times since replacing the gaskets. I suspect the clamps on this unit are failing... could be over stressed or faulty worm screws. This unit was purchase used. If it does not stay tight this time I will replace. The second unit had to be re-tighten a second time and has stayed tight. I checked them last week and they still had the proper amount of torque.

The third unit has a custom dual muffler header, one on each side style. The dual header is made of Schedule 40 stainless and weights in a 9.4 lbs which is twice as heavy as the factory header. It was tightened the one time and checked a week later and is still tight. This set of honda gaskets were re-used from the original installation. I inspected them prior to re-installing and they still looked like new. / Ken
