Winter Storage

I am looking at storing my 2010 RTS in an enclosed cargo trailer for the winter. I am not able to hook up a battery tender as the trailer will be stored in a storage building with other vehicles. My question is can I just unhook the negative terminal for the winter with out causing problems? Any feed back would be appreciated.

not really sure about the battery, i would think that you can take it home and charge it there. but air circulation would be a must to stop it from sweating

Yes remove the battery, take it home and charge it once a month or so.

Hello Fellow Canadian !
You can unhook the battery terminal as suggested but in my opinion its not a great ideal but if you go this route make sure battery is fully charged before unhooking the terminal.
Not great because. The worst case scenario the battery could discharge and freeze causing the battery to crack and leak acid all over your spyder or simply you could kill the battery from not charging it over the winter therefore the battery will need replacing because it will not hold a sufficient charge.

I know its a huge pain but ideally take the battery out of the spyder and bring it inside a warm building and keep connected to trickle charger.
Another idea might be to get a solar battery charge and hook it up to the battery and put the solar panels on roof of trailer if the trailer is parked near a window in the storage building.

I used solar panels for a boat battery stored in a cold shed in the winter and put solar panel against shed window and it worked I had a fully charged battery come spring.

Just some thoughts for you. I store my 2010RT at my dealer and he looks after keeping battery charged.

Its going to be a cold winter for us again this winter as I live an 1.5 hrs south of you.

I would take it out and keep it on a tender in the warmth of your basement or shop! I take the batteries out of anything I store in an un heated area, just the safe thing to do!

If I were you I would do what my neighbor told me, he ownes Nor-Cal Battery Co.
I asked him the same thing only it was for my 5th. wheel trailer he said if I take the battery
out and take it into my garage for the winter and hook it up to a battery tender it will last for
years.I am in a much much warmer place than you are but I keep the 5th. wheel trailer
in Utah so it is cold and snows there in the winter....

Thanks Folks for all your help. Looks like I better get brave & take the bike apart to get the battery out & put on the trickle charger. Love to send the bike to the warmer climate of the Southern USA to solve the problem but I would have to spend the winter down there with it. (ha ha). Good luck with your winter storage. Grew up across the lake (Ontario) from you in Watertown, N.Y. so know exactly what you face each year. I miss the summers and fall but as soon as Thanksgiving is done, I would be out of there. Still have many relatives up there but don't miss the cold. Will be thinking about you in...Oh hell...pick a month. . I may have missed something as to why battery is being taken out. Ok reread your original post. I take it you don't have electric source available for trickle charger. If you have light in your storage area you would have one. Humm. Again best of luck.
