Would you Buy 2013 RT (new)?

2013

:gaah:..Even if the 2013 RT models had no issues at all....( which is not the case ) I wouldn't buy it over the 2014 RT............The 1330 Ace engine and transmission are so superior to the Antique 998 it's a NO BRAINER.......and the 2014 is almost maintenance FREE ( as far as taking it to a dealer constantly ) this alone is worth about $ 500 to & 750 per year.......................IMHO....Mikeguyver

I would not buy a 2013 with the issues it has.I would either get a 14 with the discount offered or buy a used 12 which was the best year for the 998 engine.Plenty of them about from people trading for the 14.

I've had my 2013 since February of that year and I've had the same heat issues as any other Spyder. Block off plate, wrapped headers and removed the Catalytic converter. 17K miles and counting... no issues and I love it!
As DJFaninTN said, you are sitting on top of the engine so some heat will be felt. Riding on the interstate, hot asphalt and high humidity just make the heat be felt worse.

2013 Spyder

We noticed that a lot of 2013 Rt are available. With all the recalls & updates that have been done are they a good buy? Are they safe?

What do you think.

I bought my 2013 RT Limited in April of 2014 with all the recalls done. I paid over $7000 less than the 2014 Limited. We have over 4000 miles without a problem. If you are going to ride it in Canada you will never feel the heat. If you take it south in the winter you will have to find temps over 90 F to start to feel any heat just like other bikes. I'd buy mine again. I also may buy a 2015 if they make more room for the passenger.

I now have just over 15,000 miles on my 2013 RT-Limited. I've had the Spyder since April 2013. I've never had the gas smell and while my right foot does get warm and sometime hot, I don't have any other heat issues. I've put Spyder Pops upper block-off plate and Baker Air Wings on and while they haven't eliminated the issue, they help a lot. The last couple of days here the temp has been above 90 and the humidity was also very high. Typical hot and humid weather in Iowa for this time of year. I rode both days and the RT ran fine. Yes, it was hot, but I had a great time.

Would I buy another 2013 RT? I'd first want to test drive it in hot weather to see if any issues arise, but if it was ok, sure, I'd save some money and buy another one.

Not way, don't

As a owner of an 2013 RT-s with dragon issues ...........I strongly recommend you buy a 2014.!
Or make the dealer agree to a full no conditions contract for a full refund if the 2013 acts up the least.
No dealer would be that silly I'm sure.

But heat problems aside.. I still love my 2013 just very disappointed with BRP's Spyder engineering team.

Yes my wife has a 2013 RT-L SE-5 and loves it. We made sure all of the BRP approved warranty issues were completed. We also added a sway bar and laser alignment. We just did a two week tour of The Great Smoky Mountains and her RT performed flawlessly. She had a passenger for the entire time working her RT that much harder.

 UPDATE---while writing this e-mail I received a call from my dealer advising me that the new panels (under warranty) for my ST were in and they will install on Friday:bowdown:. Will write discussing changes and improvements, if applicable.

Just from the posts on this forum....no, I wouldn't get a '13. I love my '12, no mechanical or heat issues, it's a solid machine. I did a ron-bar/links, no other suspension work was needed for me.

The '14 has an excellent reputation, as well as much better fuel economy. If $$s are tight, find a good used '12 that is still under warranty. If you can afford it, spring for the '14.

I like my 2013 and am not sorry I bought it. I live in the hottest state in the US and ride year round. It is no hotter than any other two or three wheeler I have ridden. I also have a lot of seat time in the 2014.

I see a lot of opinions here from those who do not and never have owned a 2013 and a few who have. For those with overly strong opinions remember: Opinions are like a**h***s, everybody has one.

This has become over rated and "Fergusonized". Many of us who actually own the 2013's have had many good rides and miles.

What I saved on purchase I will make up on trade in if I ever trade it in. No intension of doing so for a long long time.

2013, YES

I have riding the street since 1978, motocross for years before that. Every motorcycle has a heat issue. Lets face, you got an engine between your legs. Come on now. Our last ride was a Triumph Rocket III. Arthritis got to bad to hold that behemoth up push it backwards and all. Now that was like sitting on a coal stove. You did not want to be static for more than 10 seconds or so.

We have had our 13 RT for about a year now. Far much less heat than the Rocket. In fact, I didn't even know there was a "heat problem" until I started seeing it mentioned here. We live in Pennsylvania with summer time temps in the 90's and humidity in the 90 percent range most of the time. We also pull a trailer with it. We have zero problems with the machine. We had 2 recalls, one for better sealed fused box cover and one for a heat shield on the brake line. That is it. Both were handled very promptly and professionally.

Not true! My 1300 BMW GT has no heat issues, the 1200 RT before that didn't either. Others I have owned did, but not all.

Interesting Question

Very interesting to see how many opposing views have been stated in this this thread. Most of the people who said "Yes" own a 2013. But that's to be expected, I guess, as most people love their Spyders no matter what model year.

Not withstanding Ann's valid comments, I own a 2013 RTL, and I've done things to overcome a lot of the heat problem. I bought it about a year ago when the current issues were not so widely known. But I have no regrets. I got a good price on it even then, and I have enjoyed it immensely for the past year. I'm not about to trade it now on a 2014 or a 2015 because I've put too much money into it, improving it and making my RT just the way I want it.

But the question was.... Would you buy a new one NOW if the price was right....

Even though I love mine, I'd have to say no. More because the 2014 is so much better, than because the 2013 is so bad. And the 2014's will be going on sale soon. If I were making the decision today, knowing what I know today, I'd wait for 2014 season-end clearances.

This coming weekend we will be able to Sew on our 15K patches (thanks Ken) and I have to say that we have had nothing but joy from our RTL. We have met great folks, been to some awesome places ,and have found a new appreciation for places we have been too countless times before. So if I found a Great buy from a dealer I trusted, I would buy another 2013.

Me too... no issues whatsoever other than having to re tighten some bolts:2thumbs:

I have a 2013 RS, so I apologize if this post is inappropriate. Bottom line is that I would not recommend a 2013 from my perspective. I am not happy with the heat issues, particularly living in the desert south west. I have had the exhaust pies wrapped, the bottom panels removed, and an ISIS radiator shroud installed. It is still vey hot to the point where my left leg gets burned. BRP has been responsive and has shipped new 2014 panels to be installed next week. I am still considering removing my "puddy cat" as well as installing JT's air filter mod, and relocating the evaporative canister. I believe that with these mods will address all of the heat and safety issues, but given the cost I would have been better off buying a 2014 model. Fun to ride, but not worth the headaches and costs to address the heat issues.
