Smart phone mount

I mounted mine like this:

Dunno if it qualifies as "Best" for you... everyone has a different idea.

Never mind I just noticed this post is in the ST forum...

I use a Rivco drink holder mount with a RAM ball and short arm with RAM's X-grip smartphone holder. If you don't have the GPS then you can get a RAM ball with long threaded bolt to replace one of the handlebar center bolts and mount the phone there.

Hey Flamewinger can you tell me whats the bag /cover on your GPS

I used the center diamond shaped hole in the handlebars to mount my X mount. Its the hole under that little plastic beauty cap in the center. It was a bit difficult as I needed to find a washer and nut assembly that I could fit through the hole but could be tightened up afterwards. A trip to the hardware store and a few different methods and I finally found one that would work.

I like the position of the mount, but I will admit when I first tried it I was worried a bit, I had a $400 phone in that little spring mount with no insurance on it blasting down the freeway waiting to be vibrated or blown free into the pits of asphalt hell. Well its been few weeks and well over 1000 miles of freeway use since and I can say it has my trust now. Sometimes I need to rotate it a bit to get it level as it occasionally rotates as I ride a bit, which is a bit of a design flaw as the head of the mount rotates several degrees when its clamped on to the phone, but this is a minor issue. The biggest concern is keeping the phone safe and secure, and it does that very well.

That is a visor to shield from sun glare. If also folds down to almost cover the unit to hide it while stopping for lunch.

I like the way you did that  Looks great. Do you have the x-mount part # and washers & screws sizes you ended up using?

Thanks a lot

If believe I used 1 1/4" wide by 5/16" hole stainless washers for above the hole with a neoprene washer to protect the paint, but you would be wise to check your measurements before going off that as I am going from memory. I had a lot of problems getting a nut inside the hole in the handlebars and tried several types of nuts. I finally got this type to work by snapping off the top portion of the spring clip that does not have the threaded nut and discarding it.:

multithreadunut.jpg

I slid it sideways through the hole and held it in place with a small hemostat until I could get the bolt threaded (well after dropping it inside a couple times and playing hell recovering it). After that I was able to tighten the bolt by pulling on it while I tightened it so the nut was pulled against the bottom of the handlebar hole, which kept it from spinning. To be honest it was a pain in the butt, but it did work and the end result looks nice. It may be much less of a headache to use the method described above by using a handlebar mounting bolt instead. But if you are set on having your mount like mine be prepared for some experimentation, you may just come up with a better method than I did.

The rest of the Ram Mount parts (the base mount includes the bolts) I got from Amazon:

Thank you for the info..:2thumbs:

It was your design that inspired me to use the handlebar hole Snoopy. I wanted to keep my plastic beauty cap out of the design though, in case I wanted to keep my mount for my next bike after I sold my current ST someday. Thats why I used the fender washers. I also wanted to find a nut that would apply pressure to both sides of the hole and was not sure the conduit clamp you used would do that. I actually tig welded a nut to a small plate originally but the heat of the welding deformed the nut just enough to make it difficult to screw the bolt in and I couldn't tighten it without it just spinning inside the handlebars. The nut I did finally end up using works, but I would not call it a perfect solution.
Its an awesome spot to put a mount, but not exactly the easiest. It would be sweet if someone made a nut that fit the hole perfectly.
Thanks for sharing your design!
