There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Helmet headsets to communicate with passenger...suggestions?

Hey guys,

Please excuse my lack of experience and education on this topic. I've searched on this topic and many of the threads speak about them as if how they work is already understood. :gaah: So I thought I would make a post to try and better understand, as I'm a bit lost. :sour:

I've heard about the Sena(s). What I'm not really sure about is how it works. Not looking for any music or bluetooth with my phone or anything (although I'm not sure if these things work off bluetooth or what?). Just looking for something that my fiancee and I can have connected into our helmets so that we can talk to each other while riding.

Is there anything basically like short range walkie talkies with ear pieces and mics that are made to be worn/fit inside a motorcycle helmet?

We went on a ride last night and just simply couldn't communicate at all with our helmets on while riding. Even at stop lights, we had to put our face shields up and even then had to yell, sitting 1 foot away from each other.
Thanks for any help!!

Whuile I've had no experience with the Sena units; the Missus and I have a set of Scalarider's Teamset-Pro units. We have been VERY happy with them.

Both the Scala riders and the sena units allow you to Bluetooth to your phone and also to other users . this allows you to not only talk to other people with the unit on there helmet but alos to take a call or listen to music while you are riding if you are so inclined. it sounds like you just want it for the intercom function and they will definietly do that.

I have owned both Scala Rider and Sena units.

I have returned Nolan N-com and Chatterbox because I did not like the performance.

We use our communicators for just that--communication. No phone, no radio (mountains and wilderness make radio suck), etc.

We find the Sena SM5 (our current ones) to be very satisfactory in allowing us to communicate clearly. The operating distance is about 2.5 blocks. Compared to Scala, I find the Sena to be pretty much clear as far as interference. Just keep the mic out of the wind. You can leave them in the "on" position. They do not require a noise or voice communication to operate. It used to drive me nuts trying to keep the Cardos open at all times on a longer trip.

These are not real cheap, but they work well. They also attach easily to most any helmet. We have them on Nolans. The unit is neither bulky or difficult to operate.

Agree, wife and I really like our Sena SMH-10R low profile headsets. They last all day on a charge too. We just turn them on and they find each other.

I use mine for music when we are not riding together. She prefers the music on the dash speakers.

Thanks for the responses so far guys...very educating!! It sounds like the widget that I desire is out there and does exist!

akspyderman...would you be able to provide an amazon link to the unit that you currently use...the Sena SM5? I searched for it on amazon and there were many options and pieces and parts etc! Wasn't sure what was what. The only one that looked like a complete kit, and also had 330+ positive review feedback (indicating it is popular) was this unit:

http://www.amazon.com/Sena-SMH10-10...=UTF8&qid=1402517502&sr=8-9&keywords=Sena+SM5

How does the Sena SMH10-10 differ from the Sena SM5 that you use? I don't mind paying for a quality product. We have decided that this is a necessary purchase for our ryding enjoyment to be able to talk together! :D

One more thing I forgot to inquire about...you mentioned that they attach easily to most helmets. We both have a scorpion and I also have an Icon. Any pointers or comments you can add regarding how these headsets install into a helmet?

A helmet is suppose to fit snugly and as such, there ain't much room inside when our head is in there lol! From the pics it looks like the speakers attach to the inside of the helmet?

Also...with the mics...are you able to ride with your face lid open or with a modular helmet in an open position? I'm guessing having the wind in your face would drown out being able to communicate because of the rushing wind sound hitting the mic when ryding? Or does the mic block out the wind pretty good?

:2thumbs:

A site sponser (motorcycle dave) sells the sena units. You may check out his site.

I have also sent you a PM.

I cannot speak to your particular brand of helmet. We have ours installed on Nolans. Most helmets come with a hollowed out place to put an earpiece/speaker in. The foam liner just fits over that. The wire for the right side is longer and you just tuck it under the helmet foam around the back of the helmet.

The mic/electronics just clip onto the bottom of the helmet with two screws and a clamp type device. The mic can be adjusted to where you want it. As long as the mic is behind the face plate or behind the chin bar, you will not have any wind noise. Full open exposure to the mic may give you some wind noise--noise screen or not.

Love Sena SM10 Headsets....

My wife and I purchased Sena SM10 set from Motorcycle Dave's he is a sponsor on this site. http://www.motorcycledave.com/
We absolutely love them.....

Another love SENA fan! I have tried others but have not found one that my wife likes as well as SENA. And of course what she likes makes me happy

:agree: Motorcycle Dave and Sena's are tops in my book. We have Bell Mag 9 helmets and they take a special base part because the SMH10's are built into the side of the helmet. Before we just used the clip on base. Full face helmets use a different base than open face helmets.

We have the Sena, it is good for intercom, music,GPS, and phone calls. It is nice to get phone calls and music from separate devices, ( the wife doesn't care for CCR)
Also, the speakers fit in the indentation for the ears in the helmet. The boomMike will bend where You need it.:firstplace:,:ohyea:
Great set, about $180 on Amazon, dealer wanted $350 for the same set.

I have the SM5 as well; less than $100 each on A**zon. Easy to link to each other and my phone so I can listen to audio books on the way.

Another vote for sena

We started with scala q2 units but recently switched to the sena smh10's - MUCH better than the Q2's - better volume, clearer communications and easy to use!

We have the Sena SMH10 & love it. We also have the SM10 dongle for music, but you do not have to have that for intercom/phone use. Easy to set up if you call customer service. The manual is very confusing, but Sena's support is top notch. You will spend about 5 minutes on the phone with them and you will be all set.

Headsets....!!

if we're voting I go with the Scala...had the team set pro till my son took it now have the G9 both have worked well....
