• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hi Everyone,
New here and someone may have already posted about this so if that is so I am sorry. My spyder when I would start it to let it run this winter about every other week the temperature gauge would go way up like it is overheating. I had this happen one time last year so I put some antifreeze in it and it did fine. I took it to the dealership to get it serviced and the oil changed and told them what had happened and told them to check to see if maybe I had a leak or something. They checked it all out and said everthing was fine they saw no problem. so I rode all last summer and no problems. know this winter about 2 weeks ago I started the bike and let it run some and it did the same thing temp gauge says it is over heating. the bike only has a little over 3000 miles. does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
 
First thing....it is not a good idea to start your bike while it is in storage. Just prep it in the fall and let it sit. I have read this many times on SLs.
 
Thanks everyone for writing. To the first guy I thougt it was good to start your bike and let it run so the ethonol in the gas won't gum up the fuel injectors because I had a 2001 honda cbr 600 f4I and I never use to start it all winter and after a few years the fuel injectors got all gummed up and would not run at all. And to the other guys the bars will go all the way up if I let them but I cut it off before it reaches that point and yes the fan is coming on.
 
If your bike goes into limp mode, it is overheated and should be looked in to. If it does not go in to limp mode it is not overheated.

It does sound like you have a sticky thermostat. Do yourself a favor and change it out and eliminate it as a cause. And while you are at it change out the overflow reservoir for one of the new ones. And then change the fan relay.

You should be able to start your bike, run it for as long as you like and then park it for as long as you like. It is a machine. It is meant to serve on demand.

Once again, if it is not in limp mode, it is not overheated. Sounds like you have an issue that could eventually lead to going into limp mode.

I agree.

Take it from a guy who has spent some time around performance jetskis that have to sit all winter....You are SO much better off using some stable in the gas and letting it sit than starting it up and idling it once in awhile.

Personally, I leave mine sit on the tender and just try to ride it once in awhile when the sun is out and the roads are clear. Even if its cold.

^^ and do not use ethanol enhanced gas. Stick to ethanol free if at all possible. This may mean Premium gas, but you Spyder will thank you for it.

A good fuel stabilizer like Marine Stabil or Seafoam will prevent the gumming.
 
It's a bit tough to get the bike up to "Normal Operating Temperatures", by starting it up in the Winter...
They really need to get run down the road a decent distance too. :shocked:
Spin all of the wheel bearings a bit, let the transmission gears mix it up some, move things around in the braking systems.... etc...
Letting the bike sit and idle, is only addressing one system... it may have seemed to be running hot, because of the lack of airflow through the radiator.

Thanks to everyone that replied to my post. Took my spyder out today and it did not overheat. It must be what you said since I was starting it and letting it run in my 12 by 24 garage it must not be getting enough air circulation and that is what was making it heat up. It was 86 degrees today and sitting at a stop light it would get up to 6 bars but after taking off and being on a road that the speed limit was 55 mph it dropped back down to 4 bars. I was very happy that it was not over heating so just wanted to thank everyone for replying and the advice you gave. Bart

But do watch your level. The cracked tanks were a problem. Thermostats can get sticky so idling an engine to operating temp may be not enough flow through the system. Rev it up it will get the parts moving...glad your good to go...:ohyea::ohyea:
 
it probably is not ok

if your temp gauge was going to the top,and your fan is running , you have a problem. it will re-surface at some point. get it checked out so you don't get stranded. J M O. 5 bars is normal operating temp.

I totally agree with coz on this one. Just sitting still in your garage and idling should no way cause an overheat if everything is working as designed....

Hello

you said the first time this happened the coolant was low fixed the level and it was fine now overheating again , is the coolant level full still? Didn't see any note about that. I would think possible thermostat, thermostats can stick , if the water pump fails it doesn't usually recover

As far as a stabilizer , Scotty mention a marine stabilizer , I use a marine product called star tron fuel enzyme .

My brother swore by it for all his boats and seems to be a good product . I am trying to ride my bike all year around unless raining or snowing out so it doesn't get put away

It is back

Hi Guys and thanks for all the info. You guys were right, I washed the spyder today and got it looking good and went out for a ride and only got about 4 blocks from home and it already started heating way up. Made a u-turn and started coming back home and the bike went into limp mode. I am going to call the dealer where I got it and see if they will fix it under warranty as when I took it to them the first time it was still under my extended warranty and they told me nothing was wrong. I feel like this is an ongoing problem and I should not have to pay since it was doing this when it was still under warranty. I only have 3300 miles on it so I hope it is something minor like the thermostat or maybe a sensor. Well just wanted to thank everyone for all there comments and knowledge. I will write back when I find out what was wrong and let you know because now I cannot ride until I get it fixed.
