• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Spyder RSS and very cold temps. Cold Start Temps to get out of garage.

I built a garage this year 24 x 26, heated etc. My 2012 Spyder RSS is sitting inside right now. My contractor wants to come this week to finish the inside. He will be insulating and putting up the wallboard. He has asked for me to get everything out of the garage. I live in Saskatchewan and currently the outside temps are -26 C. My question is can I put the key in the Spyder and turn the ignition on so that I can get the bike into neutral so I can push it outside? Would not be very keen on starting the bike at these temps. What is the coldest safe starting temperature for these engines?

Not to worry... You've got a semi-synthetic blend in the tank that should be up to the task.
Remember; Ski Doo has been 4 strokes in their sleds for years now...

I agree with Bob, you should be good to go. Whether you start it to move it or just turn it on to go to neutral. If you start it just let it warm up good before you even touch the throttle.

Don't immediately have the answer. So, my question is anti freeze. Are you good to go at those temps?

That's cold.!!

you should be fine to start her up if you want. Turning ignition on and getting into "N" should be fine or do it manually, if you left it in gear and it is a SE5. If SM5 then you can get ti to "N" without the ignition. If you do start it up run it till it is at full opperating temp and drive it a bit. Stay warm..!!

I would Not start it if its possible to just push it out and back in when he is done!
The RS/GS is easy to push around.
Starting and idling at that temp does No Real Good?
I would attach my battery maintainer via extension if that's possible. ( But thats just me?)

I push my SE5 2013 RS-S in and out of the garage all the time with the key off, for the same reason (don't want to start it up unless I can take it for a ride to fully warm up the engine/trans).

I would play it safe and avoid starting engine as semi synthetic oil is summer grade, my concern is that on start up engine might not handle the current cold temp you are experiencing now.

Iceman31 - I would go with Marker. He is a fellow Canucker and would best know the conditions of the Great White North. I am a Canucker too, but I have been in the USA since '96, so I have not dealt with my Spyder and the cold weather. :dontknow:

Worked in Fort MacMurray in '94, January to September. Boy that was one cold winter (-45F) and then one hot summer (+95F).

I would agree with not starting it at all - push and pull it, in and out of the garage. Tell the contractor to be quick with his work.

24 feet X 26 Feet???

Put in the middle of the floor, Cover it and tell the contractor to work around it.

That might be the best idea so far!

Independent Contractors can sometimes get to be just a little bit TOO independent! :gaah:

If you have an SE, it doesn't need to be in neutral to be pushed. It rolls even if left in gear, that's why the parking brake needs to be set and has an alarm. You can turn on the key to disengage the parking brake with no worries, just remember to set it again after you move the Spyder, and be prepared to listen to the alarm if you shut it off while you are moving it.

Where about a in Saskatchewan are you. Regina here. I like the idea someone had about pushing it into the middle of the garage and covering it. Cutting wallboard is not going to be too dusty. It's not like you are going to be able to mud tape and sand until the spring anyway. I wouldn't want to push it outside in these temps. The plastic on the bike is going to get really brittle. You know it doesn't take much force to crack plastic with our temps. Starting the bike not a good idea. Heat from the bike and our temps equals condensation. Condensation equals water. Water and metal equals corrosion. Not that there is much to corrode, but who wants to find out in the spring. If you are nearby give me a shout and we can ride in the spring in 4 and a half months.

THE MOVING IT THING

I could be wrong.............But if you put it in neutral ( via the paddle ) and immediately shut it off,......if you don't turn the key on again it should re-main in NEUTRAL without activating the electrical system........IMHO......Mike
