• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. nojoke We were already to go to Florida for the winter and going to load the Spyder, but:yikes:dead battery. No time to go searching because of tiime constraints. Now am I need to order a new one. What's your best battery recommendation and order source?

Your going to get a lot of opinions on battery brand. The stock Yuasa is a good battery and probably the most common battery in most powersports. The only battery I like better is a Deka.

I am still on my stock battery. My bike is a 2010 and the only reason I would change brands of battery is to go with one of the high dollar batteries that weight about 2 pounds. Those are amazing! they've got them at Batteries Plus stores. Direct replacement for the spyder battery at less than a third of the weight but they are over 200 dollars. I swear they feel like an empty plastic container instead of a battery. Also it is said that these will last 7 to 10 years.

No matter what battery make you buy the way to extend its life is to keep it on a battery maintainer when ever you are not riding. I do this and my current Yuasa battery is 7 years old with plenty of life still in it . Have a battery bug to monitor life and it is showing more then 79% on last start.

Battery charging

When you do get the new battery , make sure the dealer does not fill it and immediately start charging it. Found this out the hard way . Battery should be filled and allowed to set for approx. 2 hours before charging to allow the mats to totally absorb the liquid. If not done this way , whatever amount of fluid is absorbed is how much battery life you have left. My brand new fully charged battery only had a little over 50% life left .This is per BRP and the battery manuf.. Replacement battery was filled and charged the proper way and after testing showed full life . If your dealer doesn't wait to start charging , have them do the battery test and check the results. No sense paying for and leaving with a half dead battery. My battery seller did not know about the correct procedure but does now.

I replaced the RT's OEM Yuasa this summer with a new one from my dealer -- YTX24HL BS. I got it home and was going to fill and charge as you describe above. But I just happened to study the Yuasa website and their on-line catalog. For Spyders, they have a footnote that says you must use the "factory activated" batteries -- YTX24HL -- not the BS version (bottle supplied acid). I called my dealer and he agreed to take the battery back and order me a factory-filled version. I figured it would have extra sealant on top or something to prevent leakage when on its side. (The OEM battery had extra sealant on top.) When the new battery came in, it looked just like the one I was returning. No different. I contacted Yuasa who were very helpful. They explained that the difference is the factory-activated batteries are put through a very specific cycle of charging and discharging to ensure 100% absorption of all the liquid so there cannot be any leakage. The seals are the same. For applications where they know the battery will be on its side, such as the RT, they specify factory-activated batteries.

A careful perusing of Yuasa's catalog reveals just a handful of motorcycles with the factory-activated footnote. Perhaps they are being overly conservative but I figure they are the experts. I just had to wait two days for the special-order battery to arrive. I'm sure motorcycle dealers use the "bottle-supplied" versions wherever possible for their customers as they can't afford to have charged batteries in inventory losing their charge for unknown lengths of time. And customers don't want to wait a day or two for a battery to be shipped. Obviously those batteries don't all leak or we'd be hearing about it. But being overly conservative myself, I went with the factory-activated version. That also means I'll get a battery that's properly charged for maximum service life as exwinger explained above. FYI
