RT rear tire wears in Middle?

cyberbern

New member
Yup, the rear tire on my 2013 RT is almost gone in the middle after 8200 miles while the edges are hardly worn. Very little wear on the front tires too. Pressure is good. I've never seen this.

Has anybody else experienced this or have any idea what to do about it? Laser alignment?

Thanx.

What I am hearing here in SL Land is, this is normal or possible premature tire wear. Common for Spyders and with this tire brand. In short you have too much twist on the throttle or on the freeways and high speeds most of the time.
You may want to consider a Cage tire replacement?
Here is some information that I have gleaned from this site.

SPYDER TIRES
For front tires:
165/65R14 BARUM POLARIS 2
165/65R14 KLEBER KRISALP 3
165/65R14 UNIROYAL MS PLUS 5
165/65R14 SEMPERIT WINTER-GRIP
165/65R14 PIRELLI W190 SNOWCONTROL
165/65R14 GOODYEAR ULTRAGRIP 7
165/65R14 DUNLOP SP WINTER SPORT M3
165/65R14 CONTINENTAL TS 800
165/65R14 MICHELIN ALPIN A3

For rear tire:
-Federal 225/50R15 SS-595 91W
-Fulda 225/50R15 Cart extremo
-Michelin 225/50R15 PI.Exalto PE-2
-Toyo R888 225/50R15, approved for road, but not good under rain (aquaplanning).
-Pirelli P Zero A
-Dunlop SP9000

personally, i'm running KUMHO's up front, as well as the rear... with exceptional performance from both...
Front are: KUMHO Solus HM, P175/65R14, Rear is: KUMHO AST, 225/50R15....

Tires
Just so you guys what these tires should cost out the door including install and balance. Falken ZE 912 is $126.70, Kumho Ecsta AST is $142.90, Toyo Proxes 4 is 175.30, All are good tires and in stock at my son's store. The Kumho and Toyo are the best in wet conditions. Now if you are having trouble hooking up on the drag strip and still want to drive it there try the Toyo Proxes RA1 at 231.46 installed. Not good in the rain though.

FOR THE UMTEENTH-MILLION TIME....
KUMHO AST 225/50-R15

Michelin HydroEdge 215/60R15 on mine. The slightly larger tire diameter has not caused any Nanny issues and now has my speedometer always within 1 mph of the GPS speed & often they read the same speed. The HydroEdge is discontinued & is replaced with the Michelin Defender,
Front are 175/65R14 & are slightly wider than the OEM.

Ordered the Toyo tonight. Got it from onlinetire for $112 shipped.

Not much help there the 13 has 15" front and rear Kuhmo AST seems to be the tire of choice for rear replacement. Slim pickins for the front.

The wear pattern looks like all three rear tires I have replaced. I run at 28 psi. I replace them when the tread indicators say to. For me, that has been in the 10-15K range.

I believe that others have said that as the tire gets hot and rolls down the road, that the center expands causing the wear in the middle.

10,500 miles. In my eyes it is simply time to replace, on the agenda after winter. We ride two up a lot, psi is 28, and I think most two wheelers experience about the same mileage on the rear tires give or take a few thousand miles. I have thought about trying a car tire, but at the same time I think if BRP intended the car tire specs. were best for the Spyder, it would have came with them. We will likely continue to stay with factory specs.

The two-ply construction of the OEM Kenda is the culprit here...
It's true: overinflation will wear the center section out first.
But so does UNDER-inflation with these tires...
They're not built sturdy enough to maintain their shape, Underinflate them a little bit, and they balloon at highway speeds... :gaah:

:agree: changing to a Kumho Ecsta sure makes life easier.. the kenda lasted 10000 miles on my 2012 and the Kumho has 29000 miles and is still going strong. almost hate to trade it in

I only got 7000 miles.

Had to change mine at 7000 miles. I think mine looked worse than yours. I put a Kumho on the rear.

I didn't believe it could be caused by the tire "ballooning" on highways at higher speeds until I followed a fellow spyder rider on the thruway one day and witnessed it with my own eyes!:yikes: that's a fact --- you cam actually see it in the tire!nojoke mine were gone at 10,000 miles and I ran them at 28#'s. the fronts look like new and I run them at only16#'s. and as to alignment, mine wore thru the left wear bar before the right on the rear tire. come to find out my rear tire was 1 3/4" out of alignment with the front.

TIRE SIZING CHARTS AND TIRES.
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?55701-2013-fenders-with-bigger

Very informative post - thanks for taking the time to do this.

Two questions:
1. When you switched over to car tires, did you notice a difference in mpg? Just curious.
2. Did you change the air pressure you run the tires at? If so, what psi are you running them at.

I asked question #2 because the recommended air pressure is so low. I note the OEM tires are lightweight tires for motorcycle use. As such, I thought they may not take to the higher air pressures - and I thought they might deform a bit under certain dynamic loading. With car tires, they are build for more heavy duty and probably weigh more for sure. I figured the heavier duty tire could take 36 psi no problem and have no deformation. The handling might suffer a bit, but I don't think that's a factor for the RT-S.

Thanks
Jerry

Yay Kumho Ecsta on Rear

Switched to the Kumho this summer after we got back from Montana with a rear Kenda that looked worse than yours and ended up putting another 1,000 miles on it before the change.
It was bald when we switched (not recommended, just hated to stop ridin) Pulled the rear tire as per Lamonsters video and took it into Discount Tire and had the Kumho put on. Static balanced it as good as I could on a Harbor Freight balance stand and then added 16 ounces of RideOn to finish.

Now running 26 PSI in the rear Kumho and no noticeable wear after another 8,000 miles. Running 16 psi in the Kendas in front and showing some wear--I raised the front shock setting on the 2011 RT to setting 5 and it seems to be balancing out the wear a bit. I will switch to whatever size/manu tire that Discount Tire has next year maybe a Mich Energy Saver if available.

too many variables..!!

I ryde agressively lots of twisties Double up high speed on freeways and have for the last 14,000 + miles and still have a ways to go on the rear tire. I'm starting to believe it is the road materials the construction and weather that is most affecting tires...jmo...

I went through two of the Kendas, got roughly 12 to 13 K out of each of them.
Just switched to the Kuhmo.

I recall a poster somewhere that said he was using a Falken and was only getting 15K out of them.
In my opinion, why change brands for such a little difference,
I'm encouraged by people getting higher mileages out of Kuhmo.

What is it that requires us to go to these off brands to get a tire.
How come Firestone or Goodyear don't make these tires ?

Just curious.

My first spyder (2008 GS) I got almost 16,000 out of the rear tire and that was with a lot of burnouts on it. My second spyder (2011 RSS) I only got 11,000 out of the rear tire. I am at 6,000 miles on my 2013 STS and notice the major issue in the middle of the rear tire and that is with very little burnouts. I have been running the same tire pressure on all of them so must be something has changed with the tire quality or something? I know someone who just replaced his tire at 6200 miles on his 2013 STS which is just crazy!
