There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 2013 RTS stalling problem

Has anyone experienced there spyder stalling when sitting at a stop sign or red light? Has happened to me six times now,the latest being today as i left the shop! they said it was a ground wire to the battery! But then it stalled on the way home.So curious if anyone else has had same problem?

2013 Stalling.

I had it on a regular basis until I had around 400 miles. Now it only happens every so often. Shop could fi d nothing wrong. I have a 2013 RT Limited.

A ground wire to the battery? I think that perhaps you should take it back to them; ask them to show you what they fixed, since it's still doing it...:gaah:

Happened to me once, at the busiest intx in town, of course. Made me a little gun shy. I only had a couple hundred miles on the 2013 RTLtd. But it did start right back up and no problem since.

I too have experienced this----

I had this happen to us too, but only 3 times since we purchased it and it now has 1,500 miles on it.

It happened at Spyderfest 2013- and I asked LEN about it and he said unless it happens quite often not to worry about it. So I haven't!

It does bug a person though. Sitting there, people staring at ya- light turns green and the thing dies and you got to start it again and go. Oh well.

Have you been able to tell what gear you were in when it happened? It's possible you may not be rolling off the throttle enough to have the transmission shift into first.

We had it happen 4-5 times within the first 100-200 miles we put on our bike. We are over 600 miles now and have not had it happen since the around the 200 mile mark. There was another thread about this same situation a few weeks back on here. This seems to be a common occurrence on the new Spyders.

Forgot to add that we have a 2013 ST-SE5.

My 2013 RTS LTD has done it several times in 2800 miles. Dealer checked it at the 600 mile service. Found nothing wrong. So, I just live with it. It does seem to do it less and less often.

Its not happening to just the 2013's. I have a 2102 RTS and it has happened to my bike 3 times so far. I would say that it happened within the first 1000 miles or so. I have over 2000 miles now and hasn't happened any recently.

hey guys just a thought I have a 2011 rt limited 25000km. Last year on my way to the owners event my rt was shutting down at some stops and a few traffic lights. When I got down to the owners event in Durango the rt needed an oil change so I took it to the local dealer, the tech said the bike was running rough and they wanted to check it out. There was a cracked spark plug wire( where the wire goes into the boot), it was replaced and the bike has never ran this good. I had problems with stalling from day one with this bike...it always stared right up now that the plug wire was replaced all is good.

STALLING

2013 RT LTD with 3000 miles. Mine does that occasionally. Seems to do it less as the miles accumulate. Minor annoyance. May be the idle speed needs to be increased.

Idle speed is 1350 rpm +/- 50. It is not adjustable, and should be more than sufficient. If your Spyder doesn't idle at 1300-1400, it probably is running on one cylinder, due to an ignition problem (bad wire, bad coil, bad ECM).

stalling

thanks for all the post! talked to the shop today and they told me to bring back friday.they are going to contact BRP.
Seems to me that there are quite a few people having same problem and for 28k they need to figure out whats up!
I am keeping a paper trail and they'll get it back here shortly if the problem persist!

My 2013 RTS SE did it three or four times within the first 1000 miles. It is performing fine now. (1700 miles now) I never experienced the stalling problem with my 2010 RS.

Mine is a 2013 RT

and yes it also stalls i have 1600+ miles on it and it just stalled two days ago and i was going from reverse to first at the home Depot here in Austin, i got honked at by a truck wanting my parking spot, since i was leaving.
:gaah:

These stalling problems will never be diagnosed and cured unless owners report them to their dealers...and insist on a cure!

I had the same issue on my ST when I first got it but have yet to have it happen again now that I have some miles on it. I've talked with some of the techs at BRP and they tell me it's a combination of a couple of things.

If everything checks out at your dealer and there are no obvious issues, here is the most probable cause:

This situation is present on the 991 ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) engine rather than the 991 engine (throttle by cable present on 2008-2012 GS/RS). I do remember my 2010 and 2012 RT doing the same thing when I first got them.

Here are 2 factors which come into play:

  1. The 991 ETC has a higher compression ratio to deliver more torque (12.2 : 1 vs. 10.8 : 1).
  2. Engine production tolerances may present a "tighter" engine in some cases.

The combination of these 2 factors explains why the engine may stall at idle within the break-in period.
As the engine is broken-in, during the 1st 600 miles (1000km) or more if needed, this situation is reduced. For me it was about 1500 miles or so on my ST.
If your situation was like mine the Spyder fires right up after the stall. If not then you may have another issue that needs to be looked at.
