Garmin 665

My wonderful wife ordered the Garmin 665 as a Father's Day gift last night. :yes:Some of you may have already completed the task of installing it on the bike so I am asking for some guidance on "HOW TO". :helpsmilie:I have a 2011 RTS with CB installed. She ordered the Garmin along with the motorcycle mount with the cables. Is there anything else that I need? We are going to Colorado the end of the month and want to use it on the trip. I haven't dove into the bike yet to tackle any tasks like this. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

First, let me say that I don't have the CB so I don't know if that complicates the install, i.e. sharing the same multi-function port behind the right-side storage compartment. If not, the install is fairly easy. Instructions are in the box with the mount.

I would first pull off the tupperware on the right side and check to see if the connector is available. (Remember that the connector has a plug that has to be removed.) If the connector is available, you are home free. If not, someone else will have to guide you.

If you are an XM/Sirus subscriber, you might want to get the GXM40 receiver that connects to the harness. I installed mine in the trunk. Good luck and holler if I can talk you through anything. ...Gnirtsnod

Mount

Are you talking about a mount from BRP or the mount that comes from garmin? I believe she ordered the mount from garmin. Is there another mount that is needed?

BRP's mount comes without the cable (MSRP $149 I believe). It only comes if you buy BRP's Zumo 660 which comes with the mount (MSRP $999 I believe). If you bought the 665 brand new, it will bring the cable which will fit the mount just fine.

The connector is included on the BRP Garmin kit.

It comes with the Zumo 665 NOT the 660 (which is the model offered by BRP).

Okay, let's back up and make sure we are all on the same page.

Mac Spyder's wonderful wife purchased him a Garmin 665, which can be mounted and connected directly up to the factory radio if the port is not already used for the CB. This GPS (665) is the same model that I connected to my Open Air Riding Machine (aka Spyder). This unit comes with a cradle for mounting the 665 and a harness that, when installed, will snake through the right front headlight socket and around on the frame just below the seat to just about where the passenger seat begins. A separate harness and plug, available from BRP, then connects to the Garmin harness and bridges to the multi-function plug behind the right-side storage compartment. Finally, if Mac Spyder wishes, the GXM 40 XM receiver can be purchased separately and that connects to the Garmin harness where the BRP harness connection is made.

Sounds complicated, but all Mac Spyder needs is the BRP harness and a method for mounting the cradle. I used the BRP handlebar mount, just like the factory installed unit. ...Gnirtsnod

A few details:

A) You are correct on how the harness will come around. However, if you purchase the BRP GPS kit (without the unit), it will bring the handlebar mount, screws and the connector, but not the Garmin harness cable.
B) The 665 Zumo comes with the GXM 40 XM receiver no need to purchase separate. It will connect with the Garmin harness cable that comes with the 665.
C) Since I don't have a CB radio of any type, I don't know how this would affect sound, BUT I am sure that the BRP CB radio has a way around this...

PS You just added this link: http://store.spyder.brp.com/product/...rt_and_Harness, this is exactly what is needed for the Garmin 665, but notice that it only brings the connector not hte Garmin harness. That will be in the kit with the ZUmo 665 along with the GXM 40 XM antenna (aka the Puck).

A) Mac Spyder has the cradle and harness by Garmin - he needs the a way of mounting. The BRP kit I provided a link for includes all of what you are referring to. However, he may have an alternate plan for mounting the 665, other than the handlebar mount.
B) Not all Garmin 665's come with the 'puck' - GXM 40. Since Mac Spyder didn't mention the receiver, I'm inclined to think that he doesn't have it...but great if he does. I have a handy install method if he does.
C) I'm with you on the wishes for an easy patch into the BRP radio system.

True... but Mac Spyder was asking about this cable: which is included in the Zumo 665, not on the BRP kit. Besides, if he got an RT-LTD, the harness installed WILL NOT WORK the XM (but that is another thread).

OK!

I have a mount already on the handlebar that I can use to mount the garmin. My wife could not tell if there were any cables with the garmin so she ordered the Motorcycle Mount kit that has cables attached but no harness connectors. Are you saying that the harness connector comes with the Garmin or do I have to order the one from BRP? For clarification, I have the Hybrid BRP helmets with the built in communication system. I do not have a RT Limited.

If you ordered a brand new Garmin Zumo 665, the harness and the antenna are supposed (I underlined this because I got a PM from someone saying that their Zumo 665 did not bring it but I disagree, since mine and other :spyder2: owners I've talked to who have bought the 665 included it) to be included in the Garmin. The BRP http://store.spyder.brp.com/product/...rt_and_Harness kit included only the handle bar mount and the connector that hooks up under the tupperware near the radio (right side saddlebag). I ran the puck antenna's cable up the backrest into the trunk.

Thank you to everyone for the guidance. I guess now I need to wait and see what is in the box and then go from there. I am looking forward to the challenge of getting this installed. I am supposed to have the item in three to five days. If you think of anything else please add to the post. Again Thanks!

I had the mount kit posted on ebay and included a link to a video on you tube for install. This is on a 2010 RT but lots of good detail.

I have a brand new BRP Garmin power connector harness that came with the adjustable mount I switched out on my bike. I will sale it for $75 plus shipping.
