2 wheels versus 3

Finally got some more miles on the Gold wing and now I can make an unbiased comparison. First of all, the Spyder is much easier to pull off the road when out sight-seeing and picture taking. I have to look more carefully at the pull-offs for loose gravel and stuff with the wing. As far as MPG goes, the Gold wing wins by far. From Florida to Franklin N.C. the wing got 49 miles per gallon, pulling the new Honda 226 trailer, which looks surprisingly similar to the BRP 622. I live 9/10 miles up a twisty gravel/paved road and the Spyder was much better for this area. The wing is just a little too heavy to make this comfortably. As far as comfort on the road, with stock seats, the Gold wing gets my vote, but not by far. Add the Corbin like I did on the Spyder rt and it is a toss-up. Stereo use and quality goes to the Gold wing, but cruise control goes to the RT. I was never a fan of the lack of handbrake on the Spyder, so for me, braking response and quality goes to the wing. As for fit and finish, they were close but the paint quality on the wing is a little better. I had the peeling issue on the Spyder after just 1 year. Storage, the Spyder takes it with the huge front trunk. Rain riding, what can I say. You can't beat the stability of 3 wheels, so the Spyder wins big time here. Towing, the extra size of the Gold wing engine comes thru. Never noticed the trailer in the mountain roads and no need to downshift like I did on the RT.

All in all, 2 totally different rides and both are great at what they do. Guess its just a matter of personal choice. Just my humble opinions here.

Thanks for the write up, I didn't know Honda was offering a trailer, they always frowned on the use but everyone did it. I came from a wing to the Spyder, the wing as a great engine and I prefere the torque. Hardiest thing to get used too with the spyder is the high revs.

However having a lot more fun on the spyder than I ever did with the wing. My wife's a restless passenger and is always shuffling around to look at one thing or another, the spyder is much more safer in this regard. I think the spyder is a lot less tiring to ride.

I have to admit I like the look of the new FB6, wouldn't swap the spyder but if I wanted a second two wheeler just for fun I would look at this.

Good to hear..!!

glad your getting used to the wing. They are different world and if you came from there and are going back it does take some getting used to. Good luck hope to see you on the road..!! :ohyea::ohyea:

My brother has a Gold Wing and he loves it. I'm disabled so I must ride a three wheeler, but it works for me.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your Wing and that it isn't leaving you stranded like your Spyder did. One thing they finally got right on the 2013 RT is the stereo. You can hear it at highway speeds now.

Loving the Wing, but like I said, there are things that the Gold wing can not replace. Loved the feeling of stability with the 3 wheels, the safety in the rain , which I seem get caught in a lot, and the lighting additions I did to the Spyder. Who knows, maybe some day, but not too soon. I , at least with my experiences, feel much better on trips with the Honda. But, as I said in the past, mine was a very early production unit which was possessed by the electrical gremlin. Lol

Dave, I commend you for your thread. I feel it is a fair one. You could have justifiably ripped into the spyder after all the troubles you had. However, you didn't.

My hats off to ya buddy, and we hope to see you again on the road.

Chris, I am packing the miles on the Wing right now. Awesome weather up here. Thanks for the nice words. Lets just say there are rides for everybody out there. Different ones fill different needs and wants. Will ride together again real soon.

Well said, Chris! :agree:

:congrats: on putting the miles on your wing. I also feel this was a very fair comparison of 2 totally different machines. Unlike many who give a review, you have been in both worlds and took an objective look at things. I hope you continue to have many worry free, and safe, miles.

I have both a RT and a GL1800 and like you said they are different like night and day. I even find myself leaving the GL1800 in first gear to hear the engine spin up like a turbine to almost 3k after driving the RT.

Lol, I thought I was the only one that did that.

I think everyone had in "bikerlive" these moments, where you can loose everything or just a deep breath if you where able to check this situation ..
so I would never discuss a side by side test : 2wheeler / spyder ....
but I really loved the Goldwing- and BMW -miles (200.000) but would never change back !!

Forgot to add....gravel in a turn, drifting time for the Spyder, holy cr** time for the Gold wing. Followed a truck pulling a trailer with bikes on it a little today, till he started kicking the gravel up in the turns. Cya Mr. Truck driver.
