• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Removing mirror without using sledge hammer?

Out of the 10,000 threads on removing mirrors, I've read 9,998 and still can't get my right mirror loose to remove the panels beneath it. I know a likey response is to read the remaining two threads but my blood pressure is so high that I can't focus my eyes (I'm typing this using telekenesis).

If you can respond simplistically, I will get my wife to read it to me and try yet again.

Seriously, I need someone to school me on this. ...Don aka gnirtsnod

Take a deep breath, I can feel your pain. If you find one of the photos of the spring clamps that hold the mirrors on, study it closely. I did this and you really need to picture them when you whack up from the bottom on the outside of the mirror to loosen them. Use the palm of your hand and do it about as hard as you would spank a 5 year old up from the bottom on the outside edge......

Down boy..!!

You must be referring to an RT. I have the RS and the mirrors......never mind some one will be along shortly that can help. Have not worked on RT's... In a minute...!!

I understand

It can be a very testing to get them off sometimes but you can take a break and have a beer. Look at the side that you can get off.
As you can tell how and what holds it to the bike. Now take the other one and lift up on it and give it a good rap under it while lifting it up.
good luck!

you're loving your spyder too much. It does take a whack - almost to where you think it is going to break off. Palm of hand to the bottom side of the mirror near the outermost edge is where I get it. After the first one you will understand what it takes and wont be as timid on the other then.

Think of the top rear as the pivot post...
Jerbear's got you on thr right track.
Kind of (gently) pull the bottom out a bit; you feel them release...
Then give it that pop meant for the 5 year-old; kind of up and rearward a bit... :yikes: :2thumbs:

I'll find some better instructions that Scotty gave me, and post them in here for re-installation...

Just ask my mirror, I wasn't so timid...! I'll be lucky if I didn't break the tabs.

So I'm sitting here with a stiff bourbon and water (stiff because it's made with Old Weller Antique, 107 proof) watching Louisville play Colorado State and reading all of the responses. Since my glass is about half empty, I won't go out and try all of the tips, but let me ask for clarification. Lamontster's video was not clear because of the camera angle. He did say, however, that he was pushing in and rapping up, so I can picture leaning into the mirror with my hand on the outermost edge and hitting the mirror from the bottom. Right?

Maybe I should go to Spyder Fest and just have someone do it for me. Oops, my drink is empty!

I don't like the method of pulling on them. Here is what I recommend: 1. Hold the mirror with one handover the glass, with the other hand rap toward the rear of the Spyder to pop loose the front clip. 2. While holding downward on the top of the mirror with one hand, rap upward on the outer corner with the other hand to pop loose the bottom clip. 3. Lift the mirror up to slide it off the keyhole clip, then remove far enough to pull out some slack and disconnect the wiring. Installation is the reverse. I have described the "rapping" before as firm but gentle. It needs to be sharp enough to pop the clip, but not so hard that you go too far or break anything. That is the purpose of the second hand...to resist the blows so things don't move more than about 1/4". Sorry for the lousy format. Hitting the <enter> key to make a new paragraph doesn't seem to work anymore.

...And here's what you told me about nailing them back into place... (Worked like a charm!)

First, make sure the mirror spring wires are straight and parallel. If they are bent inward they may not catch the post,
and if they diverge or bend outward, the mirror will be loose. It can help to put a very tiny bit of lube on the outer,
conical part of the post only. I'm talking about a film here, not a glob. Make sure there is none on the back side (post notch).
Engage the keyhole slot first. Then rap downward firmly (but politely) on the outer edge of the mirror to seat the bottom latch.
Now rap forward on the outer edge of the mirror to seat the front latch. You can rap a little harder than you can taking the
mirrors off, because they won't fly across the room, but don't get carried away. Problems seating the latches are usually
caused by bent spring wires.

Thanks to Jerbear for the update. While going for a refill, I stumbled out the door to the garage. In trying to right myself, I hit my head on the bottom, out side of the mirror and to my surprise, it released from the two lower pins. Now, I'm not sure what's next but I better wait until the morning to find out. ...Don, aka Buzzed in GA.

Half way there

Congrats! See the important thing is that you walked away and got in a better mind set. :clap:Find it works for me most of the time.

i picked up a couple extra clips for the mirrors when at the dealer last fall. Have not needed them yet but I am assuming that these will not do their job after a few more times of coming off the machine.

Realize on here it is not easy to communicate what a "stiff wrap" on the mirror is. I know the first time I removed them I was shocked at how "stiff" the wrap had to be compared to what I thought I saw on the youtube videos.

I used to struggle with mirror removal on my RT until I read and followed Scotty's advice. Now it seems easy, or at least it was last weekend when I removed both mirrors and all the side panels to just look at the innards and do a little cleaning. Thanks, professor!

Gentle never worked for me. I put both hands under and jerk that sucker up till the bottom comes loose. Then jank up again to get top one off. When putting back, top goes on easy, bottom ones again require a good strong push down, sometimes a light whack.

I also have extras of the upper plastic "keyhole" as that's the part that is most likely to break when you're rapping on the mirrors to get them loose and the mirror moves a little too far before you can get it off the keyhole. The lower spring clips are called "housing" in BRP-speak, and the upper plastic keyhole is called the "housing clip". Parts 219800156 (lower spring clips -- 2 per mirror) and 219800158 (upper plastic -- 1 per mirror). (part numbers for 2010-2012)

The fog has lifted and the BP has dropped to near normal levels. I've spent this morning rereading all of the great advice which I really appreciate, so here is where I am with the still-attached mirror. (BTW - the left mirror has never been off either.)

I did exactly what Farmbanker said and sure enough it released and the bottom two pins are exposed as I look through the gap at the bottom of the mirror; however, no amount of hitting, smacking, rapping, or 'spanking the 5 year old's butt' have been able to release the top pin.

Can someone push me over the finish line if I've already released the bottom two pins?
