Slowly, but Surely

I haven't mentioned anything more about the house project. The reason for that is that we have been struggling to get an acceptable plan from the designer. I handed him a plan to start with, but it repeatedly wasn't translated well. We were close to giving up and starting over, but Friday we got what we wanted to see, at long last. Today I met with the builder to work out some details, and we should have final prints by late next week, with cost estimates shortly thereafter. It is a huge relief! Now if the paperwork will sail through and the weather will cooperate, we can break ground and start our log home. Not looking forward to the dozens of decisions we have yet to make, nor watching others build things for me when I've built things all my life, but it is just as exciting as it is daunting. Hope the timing lets us make Spyderfest and Maggie Valley. Wish us luck.

Scotty, I think you may of missed something. After all of the construction is completed, you'll have the joy of selecting the "DECOR" portion. Doing that, jointly with your wife and/or hanging wallpaper with your wife, I've found to be a true test of your marriage. I managed to come through it with a few battle scars 20 years ago when we undertook building a new home. Best of luck buddy. Exciting time ahead.

Scotty, here's to wishing you and Nancy the best of luck with the new direction you're taking in your lives. I was born and raised in Allegan, lived about 6 miles south on 106th Ave just off from M-40. A lot of nice area up there. I go there snowmobiling in the Allegan forest. Connie and I like to ride the Spyder in that area around Lake Allegan and the Allegan Dam. Still have relatives in Allegan although a lot of them have migrated to the Otsego/Plainwell area.

If you need any help with anything please let me know. I used to build custom post buildings for a living and I also have done some plumbing and have a good understanding for electrical.
As you know I also have a truck and a 23' trailer if you need help moving.

OK, call me a RedNeck or Country Boy or whatever, BUT, i have never seen Wallpaper in a true Log Home.

One of the advantages to building a log home is that there is no wallpaper. There will be some painted drywall, but wallpaper is out of the question. One of the advantages of buildg a home, period, is that after you build you have no money left for decor. :roflblack:

I have a bipolar response and feelings for your project.
On one hand, I am envious of your project - it sounds really exciting and I know from some experience the joy and satisfaction;

on the other, from the same limited experience, I am glad, my friend, that it ain't me.

There is no doubt we have lost our minds to do this at this late stage in our lives. Can't age in place here, though, and we're not ready for the wrinkle ranch, so this seemed logical at the time. We are looking forward to escaping the creeping civilization that has encroached upon us during our 34 years here. With our own 11.5 acres of woods, we will have the wildlife as our neighbors from here on out.

I was born in Allegan County, and lived in Saugatuck as a youth, so this is moving home in a way. We will be near 110th off M-40...small world! I also have to build a barn for the toys this summer, so I may just take you up on your offer of help. Hope to see you soon.

In reality it will be a half-log home...but there will be no wallpaper! We'll have plenty of wood inside, too. Not really trying to fake it, but we want the insulation that you can't do as readily with whole logs.

My folks live in a "log", Log-Cabin... Miserable dang thing! :gaah: Nothing is straight, exposed electrical wiring everywhere... :gaah::gaah:

That is a very accurate desription. It is a conventional (6" stud) frame home with thick wood siding. We could have gone a variety of ways...logs, panelized log-faced construction, engineered logs, modular (frame-based), log siding over SIPs, or this way. It seemed to be the best of both worlds. With whole logs, there are some good advances in profiles, kiln drying, construction methods, and sealing products that have improved today's log homes considerably over those of even a decade or two ago.
