Don't forget about good ol Virginia BBQ. Some of the best pork comes out of Smithfield,VA. :firstplace:

Here in eastern NC we take a whole pig and start it on the pig cooker about 2 a.m. We slow cook it over hot hickory coals until the ribs lift off the meat without any resistance. Now during the cooking time we have to have something to keep us awake so that's where the liquid fortification comes in and the occasional sandwich. Sometimes we also BBQ some mountain oysters or venison roast on a seperate grill to eat during the pig cooking process. After the pig is done we do one of two things. We either leave it on the grill and just let you pick off what you want, hence the term "pig pickin'". Or we pull the meat off the bones and coursley chop it up. This is usually done on a specially designed home made 2" thick chopping board made from white maple or white oak. Seasoning; here in eastern NC our seasoning is a liquid made from vinegar, salt, pepper, and hot pepper flakes. This is poured onto the whole pig just prior to completion of cooking for the pig pickin'. It is poured on to the chopped pig after being chopped. This is never overdone and there is always a gallon jug of it available for anyone who wants extra. And Texas Pete is on the table as well. The hard skin, known as cracklin' is broken into pieces and anyone can have some. None of that tomato based sauce around here. There is slaw and potato salad. We also have hamburger buns available for BBQ sandwiches which consists of chopped pig and slaw. Oh, and we cook up a mess of hush puppies too. And at least one of the ladies brings a pig pickin' cake and some good homemade banana pudding. There's plenty for all and you're welcome to take some home. I almost forgot, someone usually has a jug of real white liquor to share. Just don't ask where it came from. Especially if the sheriff is attending. I will also add that a pig pickin' is the standard rehersal dinner for a wedding. Pig cookers can be as elaborite or as plain as you wish. Some are gas fired if you're in a hurry. I hope I haven't left anything out. If I have I'll add it later, I have to go get some pig now. Forgot, the ribs are reserved for the cooking crew.

The definition of "politics" is: The art or science of influencing people on a civic, or individual level, when there are more than two people involved, of, relating to, or dealing with the structure or affairs of government, or the state.

So if you thought it was anything less, or restricted only to party politics, well now you know.

Politics is something we're forced to live with almost every day in our lives and it can and does divide even the best of friends and family. There are some who feel it's necessary, for good or bad, to pervade every aspect of our lives with politics and will use any means available to them to make their opinions known.

This is why many wise forum owners and administrators have a strict no politics policy. Such is the case here, Lamont is a superb owner/administrator, one the very best, we all know that. This forum reflects his vision, and as a result it's one of the best in existence. We need to keep it that way. We come here to read, learn about, discuss, and enjoy our Spyders. Motorcycles for many are well known as a way to escape the difficulties and harsh realities of life, if only for a while. A most effective therapy and one we all need in one form or another. The majority of us certainly don't come here to debate guns or any other ugly politics, we come here to escape from all that, just for a while.

So can we please agree to keep the peace and take our politics elsewhere? There are many, many places on line and off where one can vent on any and all political issues if they need to, but please, not here. Please prevent Spyderlovers from becoming a political dumping ground, it's so much better than that. Can't we keep this about motorcycles as it was intended and declare this a politics free zone? Let's choose to stay friends, and for one tiny corner of the world let peace prevail.

If someone finds a topic offensive, why will they go out of their way to read it? Wouldn't the fact that Remington is mentioned in the title alert those opposed to guns, that guns maybe mentioned in the post?
What if a pic of a Pop-Tart bitten to the shape of a gun were posted, would that be offensive?
I'm sure if any of us works hard enough at it they can construe virtually anything to be political, and therefore offensive to our oh so delicate sensibilities, but then why have an off topic board?

Oops, missed the post mentioning the Governor. That does put the ball over the wall, and is directly political, but none the less, if I see a topic I think may annoy me, then I read a different topic.

Your question is a fair one and I'll answer it directly. We all have a choice in life, we can choose to hide our heads in the sand every time we are presented with something we see as wrong or we can face it. If we choose to face it, we then need to select issues that we care the most about and where we have a chance at making a difference, because no one can solve every problem. I care about this site, I care about it a lot. I don't want to see it devolve like so many others before it into a political free for all. Like Roger mentioned in an earlier post, once forum members become divided the hatred spills over from the off topic board into the main boards, and then things spiral out of control quickly. I've watched it happen again and again until the forum is ultimately ruined. You can see it starting to happen here. Nothing is more divisive right now in the US than guns. In many forums any and all discussion about guns are expressly forbidden, political or not. This is not because the forum owner is for or against them but because he knows how destructive the subject is to the health and welfare of his forum. Lamont has gone even a step further to protect the welfare of his site, he's instituted a zero tolerance policy on any and all political issues because guns are not the only destructive issue. This was a wise move. This forum is not only his hobby but also his business. No one would endanger their business with something as destructive as this.

There is absolutely no need to discuss politics here. If you open the board up to guns and other politics not only do you draw in the pro and anti gun factions but also the pro and anti abortion factions, the pro and anti gay factions, the pro and anti environment factions, and on and on until everyone is so divided and unfriendly to each other that we can't discuss motorcycles anymore. This forum constitutes a micro community, micro communities simply cannot survive highly destructive divisions. No matter what your opinion is on gun laws or any other political subject, it's just not worth discussing them here. There are literally thousands of places to go to talk politics so why here? Is it worth the risk of ruining this site? So that's why I don't just look the other way.

Let's keep Spyderlovers healthy, no politics, no exceptions.

1.6 Billion rounds of Ammo For Homeland Security? Forbes.,
Yeryyyy interesting, look it up i don't know how to link it!!

Been thinking about doing that later in the summer when all the Fests are done with. I don't want to trump THE BBQ either. The fire department I was in used to cook eight to ten pigs in one night for our annual fund raiser. We would sell plates at $7. The plate usually consisted of pig, BBQ potatoes (I'll explain them later) green beans, hush puppies and a slice of cake. Or we would change it up and do pig, slaw, potato salad, hush puppies and cake. We always sold out. BBQ potatoes are new potatoes boiled with some hot sauce added while they boil. Mmmmmm good. Most all the churches and fire depts. around here have a fund raiser like that. They give you the choice of BBQ chicken or pork or both for an added cost. The plates usually run $7-$8. The church down the street from us does turkey with all the trimmings. Gooood. I've even done BBQ turkey. And you can get smoked turkey too.

:agree: We just need to keep away from politics, especially when there's no relation to the main topic of SPYDERS out here.

Here's a better example of how either of the Bobs could have interjected something about guns AND Spyders:

"As I was leaving church and heading to the local Planned Parenthood to protest them, I couldn't fit all my ammo AND my AR-15 on my Spyder.... what do you all do to fix this obviously common problem?"

;)

Seriously though... there are many hot-button issues right now in the USA and the entire gun situation is a big one... that DOES need to be debated.... but not out here. Many out here talk about their love of guns and what they own... and I see no issue with that... but when it comes to talking about gun laws being stupid, etc..... that crosses the line into politics.

Politics, religion and sex.... the 3 big no-no's to keep a forum happy and fun!

Now about that BBQ........

Got my mouth watering . You can keep the chicken and turkey, this ol boy don't do bird of any kind. How do you make your hush puppies (do you do lots of onion in them?).

I know this was meant as a fun poke at the Bobs, but that is one seriously polarizing and intensely politically charged remark, pretty much proving any disagreement being viewed as evil. You could have said Bob was going to the range and couldn't fit his rifle on the Spyder...

To make the other comment, IS generally perceived as hostile and the very reason why no one can have a real conversation without attacking.

I'm not picking on you. Just found it super interesting you pointed out the hazards of political and religious conversation, while backhandedly likening some of your fellow SL friends whom you vehemently disagree with to religious and political terrorists!!! Just saying...

Dan,
We keep TRYING to get back to that delicious topic... :gaah:

Unless you've got a joke about the Politician having sex with the Rabbi...or Priest... or vicar... let's get back to the food! :2thumbs:

Lol... yes.... and that was exactly my point..... which I tend to make in unusual, sometimes controversial ways.....showing an extreme example in a funny way. The Bobs won't have a problem with it as it's all in jest....and wouldn't be considered appropriate. I have no idea what their religious or political views are... and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'd like to think of this place as a Star Trek 'neutral zone' pertaining to the big 3 no-no's......;)

Oh.. and I don't think the Bobs and I vehemently disagree on some of these topics... pretty sure they're of the 'live and let live, just don't push your ways on me' opinion like I am.

Perhaps I should have noted that sarcasm was being used.... ;)

So what kind of hot peppers do you guys prefer?? :dontknow:

I support peppers from all walks of life and all viewpoints. I've used Green, Red, Yellow... sometimes all at the same time ! OMG......

All the peppers CAN reach across the plate and make a good compromise on the final taste. ;)
