Oil Consumption

Since my first oil change at 600 miles, I've been checking the level every 300 miles or so. Each time it's been about halfway between the "full" and "add" lines, so I've added a few ounces to top it off to the full line. So now at 1800 miles I've used about a third of a quart in this puppy. Is this a normal consumption or am I looking at a problem?

Don't add any oil when you are between the marks, and you will probably do better. The RS tends to blow oil to the airbox when fully topped off. One third quart in 1800 miles isn't bad, though. I'd say that was typical for many Spyders.

Engine #3, 21K miles, Aerocharge airbox, change oil every 3K miles, no (zero) oil consumption.
Included the FIM race on the Salt Flats...

There is no need to keep your oil level at the full mark,
Half way between the full and low marks is fine. :thumbup:

In the past, I have topped up the oil between changes but I did not have to. I am on my first cycle with the new style oil filters, the dealer did the last oil change and over filled it a little bit. It looks like it will soon require another oil change and not need to have any oil added.

2400 miles and I noticed an oil drip on ground. Looks like a leak coming from left side under lower Tupperware. I this where the air box is? Dealer said they updated air cleaner.

If it's coming from the air box, It would be dripping from the Lower RIGHT side as your sitting on the Spyder.

First run your hand under the bottom of the box and feel if it's wet with oil, If it is then most likely it's blow bye, And an easy fix.
Second, You'll need to open the air box and wipe it clean, Also check your oil and make sure it's not over filled that's a common cause of blow bye.
I stopped the blow bye on my 08 by putting a piece of foam [sugar cube size] in the crank case vent tube [breeder tube] located at the bottom Left of the air box. Do a search on blow bye.

In addition to what Bob said, don't overfill your oil. Oil should be checked at full engine operating temperature. This does not mean just having the water temp gauge read 3-5 bars. Best time is after a ride, when the engine and oil are warm, too. The dipstick on the Spyder is read completely screwd in, unlike most other vehicles. Failing to do either of these things will result in an oil level that is too high. In addition, the Spyder tends to produce less blow-by to the air box if the oil level is kept a little below the "Full" mark. About halfway in between the marks works better for many owners. Even with these measures, the airbox should be checked and cleaned regularly.
