Think I'm about done with Deals Gap

I'm guilty more often than I would like to admit: speeding, passing on double-yellow, etc. I can come up with all legitimate (at least to me) reasons to do so. Cagers get crazy sometimes around bikers and do unexpected things. I've been following cars going under the speed limit and a four-wheeler will get right on my tail. I'm going to get out of the way. If I get caught I'm going to do and say everything I can to get me out of the ticket. However, bottom line is that if I get the ticket - so be it!

The situation at Deals Gap, Shady Valley and ... add to your list ... North Georgia around hwy 60, 80 etcl, this is selective harrassment. It is unbelievable the amount of resources and man power that is being devoted to keeping us rogue bikers in line! At the Gap, they are stopping and ticketing bikers that have relocated their tags, .... for not having their inspection sticker in the correct location. Bikers have been harrassed because of loud pipes (in the leo's opinion) and the list goes on and on!! As I said earlier, if I get a ticket --- that's life. If I get a ticket in Deals Gap, Shady Valley or any other location where law enforcement is practicing selective enforcement (read ... TRAPS) I will spend some more money to make my points known.

Back to the Georgia situation. Two years ago, a friend and I were traveling the North Ga mountains. GREAT RIDING. Speed limit however in most areas is 30mph which is ridiculous. IMHO the reason for the low limit - to trap bikers. This particular day, we counted over 14 patrol cars in the area and one helicopter. YES, a helicopter! I can't imagine the cost involved. At one point, the cops had a stop set up at the bottom of one of the best twisty areas. Coming off of the mountain at this particular point, every bike had already slowed because of the terrain - so, no speeding was involved. We were all checked for documents, etc. In the woods I spotted seven patrol cars parked in a single file line. Most of them were out of their cars working the biker criminals because of out-of-date sticker or ... whatever they could find. From that point there was a 3/4 mile straight-a-way. The temptation to peg the throttle was overwhelming. Unfortunately, way too many bikers did this. You guessed it - at the far end on a hill was Smoky with his gun and around the bend was another covey of patrol cars. Later on that day, on a loooong straight, a trooper actually jumped out of the bushes with his radar gun. It was comical. fortunately I had spotted an observor sitting on a ridge on his ATV watching the activity. I knew there had to be something he was looking at and ... sure enough, he was watching the the show!!

Rider Magazine published the letter my friend wrote to them about the debacle in Georgia. Perhaps we should get a grass roots movement going to let the Motorcycle magazines know about what is going on in Deals Gap and Shady Valley??? Has anyone contacted AMA?

They (cops, do-gooders, bike haters, etc.) can come up with their own spin on why they are doing this but it still gets back to selective enforcement and I don't think thats right!!!

Somewhere someone is calling 911 and waiting an hour for a cop to show up:mad: Do they not have anything better to do with their time? I travel a lot and usually drive 10 to 15 miles over the speed limit (in an SUV) and I have NEVER gotten a speeding ticket since i started driving. I've been in fender benders but that has been because I've backed into someone in a parking lot (I have a BIG SUV). The only major accident I've been in was when all traffic was stopped on major highway and some f:cus:er slammed into my car with me and my babies in it. Then managed to drive away and leave us for dead. After multiple calls to the police station to follow up with the investigation, I soon realized that they weren't even trying to find the a:cus:holes. I respect the local law enforcement cause i couldn't imagine doing their job but i do think their priorities are screwed up. If they are going to write someone a ticket they need to focus on people driving 50mph through a school zone or something, not someone riding on a deserted road.:chill:

I agree on both the selective enforcement fiasco, and the priorities being screwed up. I do tend to believe a lot of it has to do with revenue, and the rest is an idiotic mind-set against bikers, although some places they just screw everybody. Saturday night when I was driving the keys back to my wife, I passed a speed trap in Holland, Michigan. Keep in mind that it was midnight, on a relatively lightly travelled section of divided highway (not limited access). There was a multi patrol car speed trap set up, and they were writing tickets wholesale. I have never seen anyone driving at any rate much over the speed limit on that stretch, too many streets and driveways for someone to pull out of, and a slew of traffic lights. Obviously they had to meet their quota before they had their donut break. In the sixties there were notorious speed traps in several places throughout the country. The insurance companies finnaly got ticked, and started getting involved. After numerous rounds fighting the insurance companies' lawyers and publicity, the speed traps generally disappeared. Maybe it is time to get more than just the AMA involved.

I do speed, and I get pulled over for it from time to time. If I get a ticket, I deserve it....

key word IF....Id be willing to bet that you dont get the tickets you deserve....Cops are notorious for letting other cops, be they present or former, get away with it. I bet if you were on the receiving end of tickets 100% of the time, you would change your tune. maybe this is not the case for you, but down here in Alabama it sure is....

I never mentioned that I used to be a cop when I have been pulled over. The first thing out of his mouth if he knew would be "then you should know better"

If I get out of a ticket is because i dont have an attitude, dont tell stupid excuses, and I dont lie to him.

How many of you remember Findlay, Ohio? The revenue from their section of I-75 was in the hundreds of millions, their copshop had more money than city hall. All from selective enforcement.

We all know that a few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us. In Atlanta a few years ago, they were having a lot of trouble with VERY high speed bikes, mostly crotch rockets. They had several very bad accidents, with several riders being killed. They set up selective enforcement just to stop motorcycles. They were using helicopters and special high speed pursuit vechiles. It was well published, with it being on all local news. One State patrol officer was on TV telling about the helicopters and warning riders to watch their speed. He said they might out run the car but couldn't out run the copter. The next day there was a high speed pursuit in rush hour traffic, and dam if he didn't outrun the helicopter. Their speed was estimated as being in excess of 160mph. One of the local TV stations was following the chase and broadcast it live on TV. Apparently the TV copter was faster the GSP copter as they were able to keep up with him a little longer. But they also lost him. To this day they still have selective enforcement for cycles. Just not as well known. If your inside the perimeter of Atlanta watch your speed. I don't go there with a bike.

I have to pipe in on this post! I have worked in law enfocement for 22 years and although it's been a few years since I pushed a patrol car, I have to say that when I did traffic enforcement in a certain area, it was because I was told to do it. We all have bosses and if there are that many officers there, they are being told by those higher then they are to do what they are doing. If they waiting for the next "donut" break, it's because being verbally abused is not fun for anyone and I am sure they get it all day long!

A couple of weeks ago, I had to stand in a park and make sure people stayed off the grass while Michelle Obama hung out with poor people and acted like she gave a %^&#. I got called lots of names and I finally told one particularly abusive guy that the decision to do what I was doing happened way above my paygrade. He realized what an idiot he was being and moved on. Trust me, the decision work at the democratic national convention was in no way mine, but guess what, I need my job so I did it!!

My point here is that those guys are just doing what they are told to do. Some states have even begun to base pay on the amount of tickets that are written. I don't work traffic and have never done much in my career, but if giving someone a ticket for speeding meant feeding my family, I would certainly give the ticket. The officers don't make the laws so perhaps getting the limits changed or starting some sort of grassroots attempt to change the traps would be more appropriate than bashing all LEO's! While we are at it, let's say that all mechanics are bad because some lie about repairs and overcharge, all priests are bad because some molest little kids, all preachers are bad because some hire prostitutes and do drugs, all soldiers are bad because of Abu Ghraib, etc. Generalizations are seldom correct.

I got stopped several times in Ohio for 1 to 2 miles over when I was living in Michigan, each time I was being passed by every Ohio car going the same way. I go around Ohio now, they obviously don't want my business, and I got tired of giving them my money.

My apologies. I did not mean to offend, only blow off steam. You are exactly correct, of course. In my town the officers had a fit when the new chief instituted quotas a few years back. Each administration has it's own ideas about what is important. Some of them are feeble ideas, but subordinates have to carry them out. I worked for government for 39 years, and I know the scenario well. It still seems idiotic to me to have a multiple officer speed trap set up at night on a sparsely traveled road. I was traveling the other direction, well within the speed limit, so I have no direct beef. I just thought it was a waste of time and money, as are many other selective enforcement zones. I do suppose our frustration should be aimed at City Hall, the State, or the County involved, however, and not directly at the officers involved.

I ride that road 3 to 4 times a month since 2002 and have never had a ticket there. I did get a FL plate ticket but that's it. The cop even said that I'm up there a lot so why not cut me some slack? It's their call if they want to or not right? I can do the time or in this case the fine but it still ticks me off that they have just about ruined one of the best riding areas in the nation.:chill:

For some reason your blaming the cops for the speed limit. You might want to rethink that .Did they post the speed limit? They are only doing the job they are told to do.Its your choice to break the law.Yes we all speed we then all break the law so if its worth the thrill than just pay the fine and not give blame where its not deserved.Think about it.

Nope not blaming the cop, like I said I ride with a few of them and I call them my friends. My beef is the guy knew I ride there all the time and he could have given me a warning and let me go on my way. This was not an unsafe situation, it was a speed trap and I got caught in it. The real issue is more and more bikers are going elsewhere to enjoy this sport and I'm soon to be one of them.

I also ride with a few of our fine officers. Now since they know you they should turn their head ?Or you should know where not to speed or pay the price? The rest of us are still going to ride there.

Well they turn their head when I ride with the group of them. Guess you don't get it so I won't bother to try and explain it anymore to you. :sour:

Yes I get it because I also ride with a group of them BUT what you need to get is when your not with them be a little more careful of your speed its quite simple. And if you really feel a need for speed go to a track day with the real riders not on the open road where it can endanger someone else.So do you get that?

Got it. Thank you for your concern for my saftey and others. :doorag:

Oh by the way welcome

I wouldn't blame you for not returning to Deals Gap. Heavy police coverage. I think mainly because of the numerous accidents and people die there every year. Wacko riders continue to show up at Deals Gap, especially on the weekends.:yikes::yikes: Once was enough for me, narrowly avoiding riders crossing into my lane around turns= the third time was the charm and I high tailed it home.
