Sway Bar "Stoppers"

I have to go and check the O.D. spacing for fit.

This one is metric and the O.D. is 30MM or 1 3/16:

The metric one is actually 14mm I.D. and will probably be to small.

Both the EVO bar and my bars are actually 9/16 which is approx 14.3mm so I would go with the SAE and not the Metric collar.

Though I am not convinced that the double bend bars move all that much I've ordered a set of these in to see how they will work.

Ron, Is your sway bar design straight like the OEM or a double bend like the EVO?

It seems to me that EVO didn't include stoppers because they were relying on the bends to limit lateral movement. There are a few problems with this. First, the bends are too far apart to effectively limit movement and second, it relies on the bushing coming into contact with a bend to stop movement. This will stress the bushings and force them to perform a function they were not designed to do. My RS EVO bar does move laterally. It results in squeaking and wear marks where it contacts the trunk. Not all EVO bars contact the trunk, there may have been a redesign at some point or others are somehow able to avoid trunk contact. They would not be aware of lateral movement, at least until their bushing eventually wear out or worse, break.

Without knowing for absolute certain that lateral movement is not an issue, it seems to me that lateral stoppers are prudent for a proper design regardless if the sway bar is a straight or a double bend.

Will the OEM spacers (I have) fit my Evo sway bar? Unfortunately the Evo owner is not available to explain his product so I
just don,t know what to think. My Evo Worked Great for about 3,000 miles before I put the Elka,a on and now everything is Great.

You can try to reuse the OEM spacers on the EVO bar provided you use strong, effective clamps. The EVO bar lacks the notches the OEM bars have to lock the OEM stoppers in place.

Check back. We're trying to find a low cost source for proper stoppers for the EVO bar.

Rabbit,
Thank you for the valuable information you have been providing it's much appreciated. It looks like you already have this all figured out and we're still playing catch up.

Please note though that vendors who notify readers of this forum that they have items to sell to the general public must be site sponsors. This applies to all vendors and it is for the fairness of the existing site sponsors. Without sponsors this great site would not be possible.

If you have Spyder items to sell I encourage you to contact Lamont, the site owner/administrator and become a sponsor. There's no better place to reach thousands of Spyder owners throughout the world about your products.

Thanks!

Never had a problem with mine moving... had it on for around 40,000 miles.......

Never had a problem with mine moving either, and not because I don't ride it as hard as I can, though that is a nebulous component hard to put a value on.

Still, there are some who say their double bend EVO bar does move.

Something that has surprised me through all of this is that I found my EVO bar is not symmetric, meaning the bends are not equal. One arm is longer than the other, etc. This really surprised me as I assumed they are CNC machine bent. And this can't be good for optimum anti-sway effect.

The bars I had made are exactly the same on both sides (which is to be expected in this day and age). But allas, I have to report that 'Houston... We have a Problem!"

I'm not doubting you, I'm just not quite sure how you would even know if it is or isn't moving. Or perhaps you don't know if it's moving and you're just saying you never had a problem. I didn't think mine was moving either until I was going crazy trying to find out what was making a squeaking sound while riding. I finally traced it to the EVO sway bar. Mine rubs against the trunk. I know some do and some don't. Like Ron said they're not all bent correctly, or apparently the same. Maybe EVO had them made at several manufacturers or made revisions. I guess we'll never know.

I've put the OEM stoppers on the bar for now and although it's not a great fit it did stop the squeaking much to my great relief. So the bar can, and in my case does move laterally whether you realize it or not or whether it causes a problem or not. It's not supposed to move laterally which is why most well designed sway bars include lateral stoppers. It's a pity EVO didn't include a set with theirs.

BajaRon & pro10is,

I got the stoppers from McMaster-Carr. I was going to try to install today. But, got sidetracked by the wiring that was burnt when it was dragged down to the engine by the ballast when it fell through the wiring behind the cluster. I'll try tomorrow.

I had time and just went to the garage. No fit problem and it's a tight fit.

 Electricals and mechanicals in one shot? It sounds as if you've got your weekend planned out already... Good Luck!

Just ordered metal bar clamps. I removed the frunk to have some paint work done and you can
see that the bar is off center and there is about a 1/4" gap between the bushing and stock
collar on one side.

RAYYOU,

I went a little overboard. Before I ordered the clamps I mentioned above, I had e-mailed someone from Australia about their clamps for their sway bar. Since I had asked him and he was nice enough to answer I also ordered his locks. So, now I'm double locked. But, what I noticed when I put the second set of locks on is that my Evoluzione sway bar is not symmetrical. There is more space between the lock and trunk on side than the other.

I just reread your post. Do you have the stock sway bar?

No, I am running the Evo swaybar on a RT.
